(get bad). the result? one of the most unlikely and essential party records of 2017. queen and house music: not necessarily the most obvious of bedfellows, but music for freaks has never been a label to take the path most travelled. over the course of their de-cades long journey the label founded by luke solomon and justin harris has released uni-quely idiosyncratic dance music, establishing the label as a go-to imprint for those seeking imaginative, unpredictable records that still undeniably work on the dancefloor. their latest release might well be among the most out-there of them all. originally released back in 1984,two sharp pencils (get bad) is a record by queen drum-mer roger taylor, featuring him on vocals as well as drums, bass & guitar. now brought bang up to date via a fully official and endorsed remix courtesy of anna wall & corbi, this overlooked album track looks set to become one of the summers most essential records. born and bred in the uk, anna wall is a dj, producer and label owner who is a key player in londons underground house music scene. her label the bricks champions up-and-coming producers, while anna herself has djd all over the world, most recently for mixmag at pacha for their ims launch party. corbi is an ibiza-based dj and producer, a&r for the highly respected fina records and co-founder of melon bomb, a party and dj collective that has in the space of just a couple of years become one of the white isles most talked-about exports. having met while working at house giant defected records some years ago, anna felt that corbi would be the perfect studio accomplice to work on the remix of two sharp pencils.

ruff stuff returns to their own label and are proud to announce a new 4 track ep. untitled04 is the result of different experiments on the sound and introduces a novelty for the label: the first official remix by the lovely italian duo black loops. never ending opens the a side with its raw groove, a hypnotic pad warming everything up and a vocal that will drive the listeners to unexplored territories. m.a.m.t. showcases the most familiar sound of ruff stuff: warm techno stabs on a straight groove filled with a single vocal and a synthetic arpeggio in the second part. on the b side the sound changes its shape with flying: a mixture of rough grooves, disco samples, female vocals and a touch of acid. the remix by black loops brings the track back to very house territories chopping the original samples more and filling them with a solid beat and shining hats. just put the needle on, push play and dance! vinyl only, limited copies.

ali renault s ever on-point vivod label welcomes uk techno stalwart tobias schmidt to the table for a return to a time when techno could be slamming, witty and downright fun at the same time. higher is loaded with funk, riding some kind of bassy lick with tightly wound drums and off-kilter synth warbles, but then -glass walls- ramps up the madness with a lead line that will stop people in their tracks before making them freak out with gusto. -pink milk- shows no let up in the energy, although the parping trumpet lines that lead the track give everything a jaunty, upbeat feel compared to the darkness of the a side. play people is a true tribute to the wonky techno scene schmidt came up with, all skronky swing and lopsided synths for all the true techno freaks out there.

j.a.k.a.m is japanese artist takashige miyawaki, a long standing producer commonly found on crosspoint records. on this release for the ever intriguing malka tuti label miyawaki draws on a thrilling spread of influences to make a truly soul-stirring track. at times the vocals lean towards a middle eastern lilt while the saxophone burns with the fire of the post punk era. with monolithic drum hits, yearning violin and plenty more besides, wabi sabi is a many-headed beast of a track. moscoman takes the original and simmers it down to a more focused but no less exotic tribal house workout.

fresh from the success of their past / present / future release, we march on, with berlin-based italian christopher ledger the man responsible for their labels 41st release. the percezione and retrospettiva ep sees ledger in flying form, as he props up with two dexterous, thoughtfully executed records that speak volume of his ability to craft atmospheric sounds. opening up the release is the sounds of retrospettiva 2, a future leaning techno jam that again wonderfully fits the brouqade aesthetic. clearly indebted to sci-fi spheres, this one is very much cut from a detroit cloth, with a steely finesse that lurks from the get go. a track that brings the listener on an endless journey, it comes some deep harmonic vibes. all things told, this is an ep of various contrasting sounds, ledgers debut for brouqade is a stunning example of what can happen when producers think outside the box. the b side consists of percezione attiva. harmonic, blissful tones abound throughout, made all the more meaningful by a slew of gentle, melancholic piano chords that really pull on the heartstrings. a light and hazy experimental piece, the track forces parallels with other masters of suspense. culminating with a more traditional 4/4 vibe, this unusual turn only enhances the producers standing as a man willing to take risks.

fouk are finally back on heist after their great kill frenzy ep in 2014 and have taken mount liberation unlimited along for a remix. weve been waiting patiently for new material, challenging the guys to take the signature fouk sound to the next level. fouks brilliance has been obvious on recent work for their own label outplay and razor n tape, as well as their respective solo projects. weve kept a close connection, teaming up whenever possible for heist showcases, with highlights in amsterdams claire and paris concrete-. seeing their work and enthusiasm made it abundantly clear that it would only be a matter of time before theyd show us what the next step would look -or better yet- sound like. anticipation ran high but boy, do fouk deliver. the excellent with lasers ep still very much portrays their own style of loose, live percussion and many layers of funk, but theyve expanded their vision and even toughened up a bit. their new taste for grit and an interest in the heavier side of funk is probably most evident on the opener f3000′,,,,,, where a thunderous arpeggio is supported by distorted drums and lush cosmic synth stabs. title track with lasers is more of a classic fouk track, combining a lovely walking disco bassline and their signature drum programming with

lasers. lots of them. the b side see you on the other side sets a different pace, carefully blending guitar licks, rhodesy chords and vocal chops into a lovely groove that feels just as carefree and improvised as it feels exciting. swedish synth nerds mount liberation unlimited ran with it and transformed it into a dreamy -pepe bradock goes balearic- track where airy echoed guitars take turns with some equally dreamy and evocative pads.
