it gives us great pleasure to welcome london-based producer leif in to the idle hands fold. from his earlier micro house releases alongside tom ellis on their trimsound label through to starting the otherworldly untilmyheartstops imprint alongside tom s brother joe, he has displayed an innate gift for combining crisp, flexible rhythms with serene, dubby melodic content that sits in a comfortable flux between icy and warm, natural and synthesised, funky and floating.

strategy aka paul dickow is back on idle hands for an lp following last years *return from the stars* 12 inch. *seeds of paradise* finds strategy boldly firing experimental electronics and dub back into outer space. like his work for zam zam, kranky and his own community library label, this latest outing from the portland-based producer nestles deftly between roots influence and sci-fi leanings. the result is a glistening 40 minutes of sonic exploration, never simplistic but never obtuse, which will sit happily on the turntables of sofa loungers and adventurous djs alike.

the last few years has seen a series of well received releases from rhythmic theory, the anonymous techno producer lurking in the shadows of the bristol music scene. *endless forms* is their second release for idle hands and follows on from where the previous ep *legacy of the lost* left off. the title track delves deeper into the sonic realms of classic jungle and comes up for air sounding like dub techno. a weighty bass line propels things along, whilst a sci-fi voice intones the title. this one is a sound system rocker. *tales of dystopia* brings to mind early nineties uk techno with its haunting synths, swung beats and deadly bass line. rhythmic theory is killing it at the moment, expect more to come.

*regular & irregular* is a collection of five unfolding tracks, that reveal themselves through hidden sections, like walking through a foreign city at night hearing snatches of life. these tracks were created over a two year period and represent andys further exploration of melodic, rhythmic, and sonic ideas, some with instrumental parts contributed by fellow fallingup (the bristol club night andy runs) crew members typesun and jay l. spread over 2×12 inches, this is the 7th release in 2013 from idle hands following on from esteemed releases by outboxx, rhythmc theory, kevin mcphee and strategy. this is andys first release since his acclaimed 12 inch for peverelists punch drunk label.

a word from label boss chris farrell: this is the new one on idle hands, from us producer strategy. i first came across paul dickows work when he released a 12 inch called *world house* on his own community library label back in 2005. it blew me away. in the ensuing years my friend duncan george who promoted bristol’s best electronic music night - under_score tried on numerous ocasions to book him for a bristol date but it never quite hapened due to the usual things that go wrong in club land. in those years duncan kept in touch with paul and last year suggested to him that it might be worth sending some tracks to me, which he did at the start of 2013… add a peverelist remix and you have the tracks here before you, dub reggae informed house and psychedelic 2 step vibes.

the ep kicks off with night escape has a melodic synth line coupled with the funky bass line to give the track a groove that will be an essential in everyones crate. the breakdown leads the listener into a different direction before coming back around and dropping into a funky groove. the second track press start which uses a sub bass line that will tear through dance floors. rhythmic percussion accompanies the bassline before powerful stabs are introduced to the mix to give the track a unique character

fresh from an inclusion on spargel tax vol 2, mysterious producer lily drops his first full 12 inch, on idle hands this summer. a-side *trumpets at dawn* is a latin techno roller, complete with steel drum melody, tough percussion and driving synths. b-side *machine dreams* takes the tempo down a notch. with growling bass and dubbed out hits developing into a grinding rhythm.

canadian producer kevin mcphee made his idle hands debut back in 2011 with sleep and house 44 over a year on, he returns to the label with two floor friendly, house leaning cuts. a-side unwind takes the bumping bottom end and swung drums of early sneak and pairs it with punchy horn stabs and an infectious vocal hook. b-side, a jam, is slightly more subdued but equally as jacking with mcphees trademark loose percussion providing the foundation for lush uk house pads and a heavyweight bassline.

it has been exciting to watch outboxx take shape over the past two years, chasing their vision for a more meaningful kind of deep house music via jakes intense attention to detail, matts way with the keys and naomis arresting voice. it has been a steady progression, reaching out to select labels but keeping things largely close to home on idle hands, immerse and brstl, while their tracks have developed in ever more confident strides.

we never forget our roots here at idle hands. for people of a certain age the wild experiments of jungle and dnb remain close to our hearts. whilst scenes, sounds and trends may wax and wane that visceral feeling of chest rattling bass is something we hold on to. rhythmic theory is one producer who like us, never forgot. here we present two tunes deeply indebted to those times. it must be stated though, you will not find any amen breaks or ragga samples here, instead, this up and coming bristol producer transposes the atmospheres and deadly subs to a techno template. *legacy of the lost* and *riveted* follow on from two well received vinyl only release on brstl and his own self titled label. both tracks are immaculately crafted hardware jams that are designed solely with sound system use in mind.

rounding off what has been a busy year for idle hands comes a 12 inch from west country residents outboxx. this duo, comprised of jacob martin (aka hodge) and matthew lambert have steadily built a reputation for themselves with releases on well rounded and immerse. moving away from the dominant trends in bass music the pair have been forging a sound more akin to early nineties deep house - yet retaining a palette of 2011 sounds. here they present two tracks - >aporia< is a lesson in wistful house, all pianos and a sneeky bass drop half way through the tune. >cromwell< is a straight ahead house roller, but with enough sub to keep the bass enthusiasts happy. support so far from ramadanman and sven weiseman.

dj duke scored a massive international hit in 1993 with this new york style, tribal house anthem. this us release features two exclusive mixes, along with x-press2s >death to digifunk< rework.

manchester duo a.n.d. are at the heart of manchesters thriving electronic music community. releases on labels such as horizontal ground, inner surface music and project squared have solidified their reputation for finely honed and darkly swung techno. here they present two weighty cuts for bristols idle hands label.
>hydrothermal< is a stripped back 4/4 excursion with rattling hi-hats and lots of bass. >lights down low< rolls along on a syncopated techno beat, with deadly snares and a droning, almost industrial feel bringing to mind the work of regis and t++.

its an exciting time for idle hands, as the fledgling label mutates into a many headed musical beast. after the bristol record shop rooted records sold its last chunk of wax late last year, idle boss chris farrell has carried the torch and opened the idle hands store on stokes croft in bristol city centre. just as the shop highlights idle hands dedication to its hometown, this latest release on the label marks the first time the music has come from outside the city limits. szare will probably not be a name familiar to many, having covertly established himself on the lauded horizontal ground label, basking in the stamped white label anonymity of deep, troublesome 4/4. now with this release and his syndrom z label, the producer steps just a little into the light to expose his unique abstractions on swung techno. >volya< ploughs a sparse and percussive furrow, while >action five< boasts a wistful, dreamlike melodic bent to leave you with two distinctly different, but equally enthralling cuts.
