“last days and time” is the third studio album by american r&b group earth, wind & fire, released in 1972, their debut album on columbia records. it was recorded at the legendary sunset sound studios in hollywood, california, with founder and multi-instrumentalist maurice white, verdine white and philip bailey. due to their live performances it cemented their status as the main funk band and set the stage for the band’s blockbuster breakthrough. songs on the album like “make it with you” (originally from bread) the pre-“brazilian rhyme” powerful funk sax style “power”, (which sounds like an early version of “serpentine fire”) and “remember the children” are excellent examples of the great songs and albums they have made during their career.

black country overlord justin k broadrick (jesu, godflesh) blesses regis’ downwards fiefdom with two tracks and a tightly sprung rework by surgeon. downwards have really picked the foulest iterations of a grim set for vinyl release, inscribing the industrial-strength torque of nothing is free - which sounds like early kode 9 battered by shapednoise - at 45rpm across the front face, and branding the knuckling 808 snares and distended electro bass blow out of kontorted on its backside. surgeon’s remix of the title tune ranks among his best in many years. trace elements of the original are extruded thru modular kit and remodelled on a bouncing, swerving techno chassis recalling bmb and cub classics, but streaked with sirens and vamped by a marching brass refrain that’s just spoiling for war. the release marks a long overdue overlap between downwards’ and broadrick’s interrelated industrial, noise and techno circles. broadrick was the original drummer for napalm death on their scum (1987) album, before forming the legendary godflesh, and carving out an oeuvre as one of the most feared and respected musicians to emerge from birmingham and the uk ever since.

andre lodemann is a highly regarded producer from berlin whose debut release dropped in 2004 on mike grant s legendary moods & grooves label. last year saw andre lodemann release his innervisions debut leaving the comfort zone ep. he has remixed for labels such as innervisions, buzzin fly, poker flat and rebirth. squares is a brand new side-project from fish go deep, focusing on completely hardware-based productions and slightly more experimental, left field deep house. tony lionni continues to impress following his osgut ton smash found a place (which continues to drive dance floors into a frenzy worldwide) with releases on versatile, mule, wave and madhouse.

2016 is shaping to be a fantastic year for rebirth records, the 10th year anniversary and the 100th release…to celebrate this special date the label owner shield and his right arm robytek get in the studio to collaborate with two of the most innovative figures of the end of 70s / early 80s. the a side is the the pyramids with isabelle antena, french singer and songwriter, founding member of electro-samba pioneers antena. in the 1990s she also led another group, the powaga sisters, for three albums between until 2004. alongside these projects she maintained a solo music career, selling over a million albums and earning musical acclaim across the globe. from camino del sol (1982) to bossa super nova (2010), her cool latin, bossa, jazz and funk vibes have delighted ears and feet worldwide. the pyramids is something really special, a cosmic and balearic song with a timeless meaning, with the collaboration of martin ditcham (sade s percussionist) for the drum and paolo mantini, a real italian talent, for the bass and chords. the aa side is now, a collaboration with salvatore principato (sal p.) and dennis young, known as the vocalist and marimba/percussionist of (for the legendary early 80 s nyc band liquid liquid) seminal nyc minimalist-funk band liquid liquid. the experimental sounding band emerged from new york city s vibrant downtown scene in 1981, developing their own unique sound which they called big beat, a fusion of irresistible basslines, junkyard percussion and urgent, free-flowing lyrics. the group s successes included club hits such as cavern (sampled by grandmaster flash in the making of white lines), bellhead and optimo in addition to sold-out concerts worldwide. sal p and dennis still explore today new ways of writing & performing music. now is the experimental way to combine the live drums played by snacks (the berlin based duo rene corbett & aljoscha babel), with the electronic world and the unique musical textures from sal p and dennis young.

reissue of an eye for an eye by byrne & barnes: a true westcoast/aor masterpiece, produced in legendary music city muscle shoals (alabama) and originally only released on japanese label climax. in 1981, robert byrne followed up to his 1979 album, blame it on the night, by teaming-up with multi-instrumentalist brendan barnes to record this rare westcoast classic. if they never recorded any other music together, both display incredible music career and went on to produce for many famous artists such as pointer sisters, patti austin, earth wind & fire, phil collins, brian mcknight, or boyz ii men to name just a few.

oskar szafraniec is a musician, producer, singer-songwriter and live performer from poland who lives in berlin. he s been experimenting with music since the age of 10 and has released projects under the moniker oscar burnside on various labels. collaborating with legendary uk producer a guy called gerald, oskar has also performed in many clubs and festivals next to well known artists and djs such as richie hawtin, mixmaster morris, ricardo villalobos, carl craig etc. this ep exclusively produced for cyclo demonstrates oskar s ability to develop a unique style inspired by his journeys around the world and his berlin life. whether for home listening or for the dancefloor, these 4 gems built with deep live sounds and subtle drums sequences will surely confirm the rise of a young talented artist ans producer.

ltd nice price --- in 2006 a young unknown david e sugar rocked up at a greco-roman party armed with two nintendo gameboys and a guitar pedal and blew us all away with the ensuing hour of acid. the night was so legendary that he wrote a song about it for our new york soundclash a few weeks later: *oi new york, this is london, oi new york greco-roman soundsystem* … and, quite by accident, the record label was born. a little black round piece of history accompanied by remixes from skream, hot chip, ragga twins and jesse rose.

nycs legendary sam records dropped the mysteriously named k.i.d.s dont stop- in 1981. it has it all trancey arpeggios, vocoders & vocals trading off with each other, brass & some heavyweight disco drums that helped propel it forth into the hallowed category of club classic. the record perfectly suited the open minds and open ears of discerning disc jocks in locales such as new york and chicago where this sublime piece of electronic disco sleaze would get plenty burn on the city s infamous wbmx thus having a huge impact, along with a whole host of other similar records, on the burgeoning house scene that was germinating in the fertile mid western soil. b-side cut do it again is a pleasant enough early 80 s disco jam, but compared to the futuristic burner that is dont stop on the other side theres one clear winner. a must have for all cosmic, disco, funk aficionados. now made available again, legitimately licensed, remastered and reissued in conjunction with sam records new york city.

2016 repress , legendary deeply rooted house records comes with a new serie releases called rootstrax. first ep is by a mysterious french artist that remains unknown for now. however, the listener that knows a bit about the french house music history can easily define the roots of the producer (not saying he can point out who he is :-) the influences of early 90s fcom/fnac sound is present combined with some classic chicago house... this is exactly the concept of rootstrax. interesting concept and cool record that makes us wonder if this has been dome by an old fox or a young puppy producer? for sure this sounds very mature and delivers 12inch extraordinaire!

vactrol park, the collaborative endeavor between kyle martin (land of light) and guido zen (brain machine), returns to the esp institute with ii, rounding out the second half of their ep series. for this installment, a sojourn was made to stockholm to record at the computer music mecca, ems (elektronmusikstudion), where the artists had the opportunity to experiment extensively with the legendary buchla 200 modular and serge modular, two of the rarest and most pornographic modular synthesizers in existence. while both instruments originate from california (buchla in berkeley as a commission from pioneer morton subotnik, and serge at the california institute of the arts), the music vactrol park draws from these machines is far from warm and sunny. akin to their predecessors on the 2015 debut i, these works materialize a level of taste and measure of craft that’s unattainable by most, each retaining an individual cinematic approach yet working collectively toward one consummate goal—paralysis.
