pisetzky s full debut album on just this includes adventures into contemporary techno music, fines ambient works, and unique broken pieces. an intense mixture of incredible warmth, weird fluffiness, mystic trumpets and high uplifts, the album is interspersed with short ambient and fragmentated interludes, each just a few minutes long: ‘state of consciousness’ and ‘tears of a rough machine’ are serene and reflective tracks that give the listener time to breathe and bringing him/her back to more dancefloor focused tracks of the lp like viridis, bakwas and wand. the result is a magic story, a history in eleven chapters that the listener is guided through, like the landscapes of a mystic journey, with a twist on the melodies and hidden effects behind every deep bass sound.

solune real name etienne dauta hails from france, the son of a record store owner father and artist mother. he moved to berlin 6 years ago and for the last 3 years co-ran the bass cadet record store. solune has just released one ep in his short career on the bass cadet imprint but is also is one half of the arcarsenal duo who also released on the label. the ep kicks off with the mighty the vision , a majestic new york inspired atmospheric stomper combining both spiritual and techy vibes that you can imagine hearing pumping out over the system at the sound factory or shelter.

bunkr enslave dust-coated synthesizers, dilapidated drum machines and rusty fx boxes to craft 4/4 tunes for their impatient overlords. their vision is clear they will make techno, they will make house, they will make electronica, and you will listen and dance. its not yet clear if bunkr is the work of one frenzied human or many lazy individuals but we do know one thing - the ringleader is one james dean, who previously released as lost idol on labels such as pork recordings, nature, final frontier and cookshop. following a prolonged spell of writing music at slow tempos, dean initiated bunkr as a reactionary desire to speed things up. too much time had been spent just sitting around - it was time to stop sitting and start dancing. true to their vision, here we have cloud chaser, a bubbling jam backed with a huge remix from shan, who flips the mix with dramatic strings, sprinkles of magic dust and massive amen breaks. no less impressive is junos revenge, a track youd turn up on your headphones while taking a nice afternoon stroll on the moon, on a sunny morning after a long interplanetary rave. igor tipura delivers the rework, complete with a marching percussion workout and acid chemtrails that will send you right back to 1993.

charlie watts meets the danish radio big band is the kind of album that many jazz fans had probably given up hope of hearing. in the glory days of big band jazz and arrangers like oliver nelson coming up with brilliant music, albums like this were, if not commonplace, at least more readily available. the truth is there is nothing commonplace about this album, it is a sheer delight.
anyone who knows charlie, knows how much he loves jazz. a few years ago when he and i were looking at a photo of the stones playing in the 1960s he pointed at a particular cymbal and said, “i’ve still got that cymbal, but i don’t use it on stones’ gigs, it’s too good for them. i just use it on my jazz gigs.” there’s no doubt, that’s the cymbal you hear on the first part of the ‘elvin suite’.
charlie watts is one of the great ambassadors for jazz and every jazz lover will relish this record, and the fact that charlie is involved may bring jazz to the attention of some that are not sure if they like jazz. listen to this and you know you do.

ant plates vinyl only ventures continue unabated, taking a break from the yse saint laur ant releases and turning to minus the majors instead. whether its just plate in another one of his guises or not is unclear, but the music certainly fits in with the more exploratory, downtempo nature of previous vinyl only releases. he looked is an especially funky number that revolves around crafty beats and warm moog-esque synth ripples. things get more broken on jizz jazz, and then drongo manages to go even further out to sea in its quest for the perfect balance between funk and freakiness.

welcome to season five of the jazz jousters sessions. after four years of non stop album releases we thought we d take a few months time out to think and work out what we would do next this season. we decided to attempt another locations series since we are yet to take on some of the locations many of you have suggested via our updates pages and emails. so here we go...
mjm would like to present locations: usa, the vinyl and cassette edition as we continue to explore the sounds, influences and styles of jazz music in different regions of the world.
in this session we hear the result of each jouster as they each chose one or more jazz musicians from the united states and began to work with that sound and come up with an instrumental in their own style, just like in season four. however there was a twist, this time they were challenged to focus on jazz between the years of 1960 to 1969. see what you think of the outcome...

now this is what we call a comeback! first ep in over five years, produced by amsterdam legend quazar. to quote gert van veen himself: this is the best ep ive made in the past years. thank you guys, your enthusiasm is just inspiring. kept me going on and on. couldnt have said it better, this release is a bomb. fuck that shit, and dance for at least eight hours straight.

they could do weird edits or make eastern influenced dance music, collect gear and sit home or adapt library music for the dance floors. or they could get together and make the secret weapon. it doesn t really matter who they are and it doesn t really matter that it s just a demo, luckily rescued on a usb stick before their hd failed, what does matter is that it always rocks the party.

this is the fourth ep the paris legends dan ghenacia and chris carrier have made together over the last year, and it’s just as fresh as their previous efforts with plenty of bounce, depth and funk. first up on the a-side is ‘the blue grass’, a deeply sensual cut with a potent low end. therein lies the groove, which is utterly captivating – made to get you writhing with glee, this one is aimed straight at the hips. alongside that sleazy bassline we have jazzy notes, swinging percussion and otherworldly bleeps and chirps. all of which makes it a great intro to this sterling ep. on the flip side, we have ‘blue stick’, another ridiculously groovy riddim with warped voices floating above a set of crispy beats and a raw undercurrent of emotion. minimal in composition, and the effect is deadly. lastly, to close out the three-tracker, it’s ‘kind of blues’ (can you spot the theme here?!). when it starts off, this one is a stomper with a moody expression. the beats are hefty, the bass morose and the analogue effects strangely cosmic. more twisted vocals are filtered in the background, giving this one its weird hook. the vocal reveals itself in the breakdown midway through before the track bounds on to its finale. dan ghenacia and chris carrier deliver three firebombs, perfect dance floor material with tight grooves and killer production. would you expect anything less?! go get em…

they release a cover of the -seasons are sitting on chairs- from arvid tuba and a few great songs like -just be happy-. as we love the insane modernity of these two songs we decided to release them on prego and asked dmitry distant to remix this happiness anthem. all songs are remastered for vinyl by isolator, housed in a jacket designed by anda masq & rodeo basilic.

the musical output by amsterdam trio s. m.nurse generated in just three years of activity, 1980 to 1983 is truly amazing by its volume and quality. the thats the body ep is their third release on domestica a selection of previously unknown tracks and unreleased versions on 12inch format, hand picked with one goal in mind: dancing! thats the body (1983) and on and off (1983) are first-ever releases. on side b, there s new versions of mort automatique (1981) and frutta (1982), previously found on the now expensive 30th anniversary: 1980-1983 album, released by domestica in 2013. edition of 450 copies. mastered from the original master tapes by ruud lekx.

much interest domestically and abroad has been generated over the years about an indie soul label in san diego, ca called musette records, whose short life span (1965-1968) only produced less than 20 singles, and no full albums. more than 40 years later, musette would achieve the collectible status among record buyers of northern soul, who recognize and appreciate the r&b grooves that pulsated on these now extremely rare singles.

long celebrated as the hottest funk band around, with a sustained tenure of fiery singles and a distinctive northern funk sound, the haggis horns are coming at you with their latest track! exclusive to stutter & twitch, outta my head has been re-recorded and re-released, renovating hh tantalizing sound into an, ass shaking hit for the ages! 3rd march will see the horn s twelfth release in as many years, with str004 marking our funkiest release to date! side a, outta my head gives you the haggis horn s sound that we all know and love, bringing a classic, carefree warmth just in time for spring, with a rejuvenated angle! destined to be an instant classic, the seven-piece have besieged the track with ample horns, enticing keys, frenzied backing vocals all in a killer verse/chorus/solo combo. a contagious sing-a-long and a party starter, all in one! side b give me something better is an example of established producer/artist, werkha shying away from the electronica norm of decapitating funk standards of their soul. by adsorbing the rhythm, and imparting a creative flair and organic sounds with an infectious curiosity, werkha places the funk innovators in an augmented light.

there’s not a lot to tell about the project glow in the dark by a certain harry miller. only perhaps we can state that with these eight tracks at hand harry miller accomplished probably the most enchanting album of the still quite young year. just when we wanted to dismiss the short-dated genre of chillwave wistfully, “future bliss” comes along with a bewitching sound hailing from an optimistic but cranky future. already the opening track “step one” with its vocal samples and its spoken word intro is futuristic soul full of affirmation of life pillowed on a synth bedding smoothed to the max up to its edges. but also the following seven tracks spread infectious positive vibes all around. the magic of glow in the dark’s tracks is energized mostly by miller’s delicate way of treating his various samples, a wary manner one usually only shows when picking up a guitar. and unlike sample based music feeding from hiphop his tracks are completely free from any sort of nostalgia, because all of his songs are designed for the future through and through. “future bliss” is one hell of a joy ride, from the first note to the last tone. the neon funk of “1987”, the broken beat of “7 billion = 1”, the synth pop of “the last dance” and in general, all of the eight tracks could be little, but great hymns on their own. but only in its entirety they sparkle this fathomless ingeniousness hidden in glow in the dark. in the end it seems to be wiser that one has as little background information as possible to be able to lose oneself fully in this “future bliss”.

henry wu (aka kamaal williams of yussef kamaal) returns to eglo records following on from his joint ep with k15. deep in the mudd is a heavy weight 6 track ep which journeys through broken beat, house, hip hop and jazz. the previously released negotiate ft. simeon jones, which originally came out on eglo sister label hotep, gets a 2017 remix courtesy of the legendary kaidi tatham and uk funky og hardhouse banton joins wu on title track deep in the mudd and century. essential business, no messing about!

speed boat is eden burns, one half of dunedin house duo sandboards, who brightened up 2016 with heavyweight releases on feel my bicep and cold tonic. splitting off for the first release under his solo moniker, speed boat applies the base coat to new label the nail shop with a gliding four track ep for the imprint’s debut release, that makes the foot-tapping accompaniment to an afternoon waiting for your nails to dry.
the vibe is in the name, as ‘speed tools’ packs a mighty punch, featuring skittering percussion, steady-movin’ bass and infectiously sensual pads that effortless take the forefront. just don’t be surprised if it swoops you straight from the salon onto the dancefloor.

picking up where they left off three years ago, modern heads, the much-respected collaboration between gianluca meloni and dino sabatini, are back with a dynamic and intriguing four track ep. the duo go straight in here with the club-ready athena. throughout this track, tight percussive elements wind in and around one another, creating an ever-changing rhythm that you can only just hold onto. under this, tense synths pulse away, producing an opaque and insular atmosphere. next up, eumaeus lightens the mood somewhat, providing clarity with a distinct opening drum pattern. this mood doesnt last long though, as indiscernible, haunting vocals begin to echo in the distance, gradually moving closer and further in the mix as sharp pads swoosh either side. side b of the record opens with the deepest and longest track of the ep, eurycleia. simple yet unrelenting drums frame this hypnotic sci-fi episode, through which otherworldly screeches and rumbles reverberate over the twinkling sounds of machines. eurycleias atmosphere continues straight into the final track, laertes theme. this beatless piece takes eurycleias exploratory mood and extrapolates it over five and a half minutes, resulting in what feels like the perfect soundtrack to a glacial expedition in alien territory. as an ep this is a complete and coherent package, a perfect extension to modern heads previous work. the sound palette is familiar, yet refined, developed upon and taken further. the old beggar is undeniably worth the wait for anyone with a taste for the extraterrestrial.
