the last few years have seen chicago footwork rise to international success, and traxmans debut album - *the mind of traxman* on planet mu - played no small part in that. it showcased cornelius fergusons brilliant ability to synthesise the beat digging of classic hip hop with the high-speed abstraction of footworks house-derived beat science. the selection of tracks on this second chapter show a slightly different take on traxman s abilities. instead of bringing in concepts from other genres, he simply creates a wider variety of footwork, made with a minimal, reduced palette. often just one or two samples are selected and diced into brain-blurring cubist puzzles that bear little relation to their original sources, or anything else for that matter.

as ljudverket is a heavily art-influenced label, the second release was made as a part of an sound installation for an exhibition in helsinki. rasmus hedlund & tuomo väänänens 2x12 inch album consists of 80 locked groove loops, 20 on each side. the installation itself holds 4 vinyl players, where every side of the records are represented as a sound source, from where the participators could themselves choose a random loop and thus create their own soundscapes. this is one for the collectors, and no more than 200 copies are being produced.

lambs musical style is a distinctive mixture of jazz, dub, breaks and drum & bass, with a strong vocal element and, in their later works especially, some acoustic influences. consisting of producer andy barlow, and singer-songwriter lou rhodes, they achieved commercial success with two hit singles *górecki* and *gabriel*, the first one being included on their eponymous debut album (1996).

after the very successful foray into split eps, luv shack records continues to explore this concept with luv013. the ep sees upcoming duo space echo make a return after their smash hit -soul power-, while the b-side is conducted by wahlberliner rotciv. -come back home-, the opening track by space echo, is a slowly building but effortlessly captivating piece of hypnotic house music with a raw funk attitude. the gently evolving synth line and the strong vocal hook are the spine of this anthemic track. the seemingly laid back -hangover- just oozes b-movie sleaze and might be space echos little hommage to 60 s lounge music, with an array of distorted guitars and soft pads coming to good use. that is until the synth theme kicks in mid-track and turns the piece into a late night weapon.

now ovo, the eagerly awaited new luca bacchetti ep, is here! with this work on his endless imprint, luca seems to be delineating a new soundscape, maintaining the psychedelia he introduced into his productions a few years ago, but now more synthetic and in some ways even minimalist. in ovo we can find a brace of dancefloor tracks, no gravity and the space between us, that maintain and harness luca s emotional and intricate atmospheres whilst also employing powerful sounds and elements that embrace the movement of the body. mature, emotional techno, where ethereal dream-like atmospheres find a singular expression and their own distinct identity. it is no coincidence that the whole ep was recorded entirely high up in the tosco emiliano apennines: a place where, for luca, nature is the element that most influences this new aural pathway. as he himself states: its this contrast between isolated lands and the chaos of the big city that produces this state of being: a new dialogue. they are two worlds which overlap within my soul: when im in new york i think of these mountains and when im here i think of the bustle of tour life .. but its up here that i find the seed, in this case ovo.

so far in its fledgling career, the ultra knites label has been populated by collaborations of the same name from the two founders sem marini and mike sharon. this third release sees the pair showcase their talents as solo artists with the first in a series of knite grooves releases, with sharon calling shotgun and manning proceedings on the a side. with a lilting female vocal hook, soft pads and jazzy rhodes touches, -people- is a classicist take on ny house that features some weighty kick drums, whilst -field of dreams- opts for a approach that s more indebted to the likes of mr fingers. marini delivers a peak time bumper in the shape of -voltage- which contrasts nicely with the deep rolling business of final track -music takes me-.

whoever is behind the ac exp project has clearly worked very hard to ensure their identity remains under wraps, with zilch info out there on the big old internet. which is a shame because theres a degree of class to the two untitled productions on this 10- that demands some recognition. both are unassuming club tools that any deep house selector will appreciate a few hours into their set, all swirling, dubby atmospherics, tunnelling rhythms and snapping percussion.
