in 1986 steve earles new brand of country-rock music was taking nashville by storm. his debut album >guitar town< topped the billboard country album charts, as did the single with the same title.
influenced by bruce springsteen (who was earles eureka!) and townes van zandt (after whom he named his firstborn), this was one of the strongest & most confident debut albums released in the 80s.
he showed an angry literacy, a dark sense of humour & a street-smart snarl that was uncommon amongst his country counterparts and made him stand out amongst the crowd. but he was also ostracised because of his anti-vietnam stance & long hair.

in the psychedelic late sixties there was a lively music scene in the canterbury area that revolved around the band the wilde flowers. they never recorded much themselves, however, but after they disbanded other influential bands were formed from their ashes: gong, soft machine, and, most importantly, caravan.
caravans eponymous debut was released in 1968. it was considered a groundbreaking album capturing the freakish and exploratory moods of the times. their sound went much further than the changing styles of the contemporary underground and that is what distinguished caravan from other bands in their genre.

duets ii is another collection of american songbook standards performed in the best of ways. it includes collaborations with the best voices of music: aretha franklin, natalie cole, norah jones and k.d. lang grace the recording booth with this legendary singer.
but it is the tragic and premature passing of amy winehouse that makes this album truly special, her appearance on the duet >body and soul< is the last known recording of the british songbird, and it is a truly heartrending version of the 1930 jazz classic. if this isnt grammy material, we dont know what is!
