london based welshman chamboche returns to the label that launched him with the smoke screen ep. his unquantifiable sound swerves genre classification, hovering around house but with enough musicality to please the hardened disco head. swirling pads and a bubbling bass line set down the groove, while keys fall around horns and vocals to make the lead track a refined, uplifting work out. slowly unfolding, the track is hypnotic and absorbing, showcasing the style of a producer as able to work the mind as the hips. bicep toughen up the drums and work the arpeggio, stripping down the track and bringing the chicago influence higher in the mix. while the original subtly unfolds, their remix demands attention from the outset, building to a climax then recoiling for another bite at the cherry. thinking big, krl ramps up the intensity with a bright, kinetic reworking. aimed squarely at the peak time, he harnesses all of smoke screen’s most propulsive elements to really work the floor. tucked away on the b side is the expansive mind your mind. trademark chamboche percussion is woven around a blissful riff, swelling majestically to round off the ep in slo(w) burning euphoria.

alex and bill met 16 years ago when bill signed one of alex s first productions (is this the rhythm? by rhythmnvibe) to a new york label he was running. alex, whose father lives in the us, was a regular visitor to the states and they sent many happy hours together hanging out at the sound factory bar and comparing maw dubs. when bill returned to the uk in 1996, they had a few sessions together making house music, though neither of them can remember why they never finished anything or, indeed, what became of the tracks. fast forward a few years and they finally got back into the studio to make sweet music together under the moniker hotel motel. since then they have created a rich seam of work that some have already described as, like salvador dali with his pants down being fellated by deirdre barlow. few would disagree.

a side >under< from evol intent featuring vocals from singer/song writer jackie b. this dubstep track is dark, sexy, melodic, and poppy, with a bass riff and drums that encourages you to urgently to hit the dance floor, and shake your ass. the vocals are sexy and consistent. she reminds me of esthero in how she can make underground production sound so polished. yet she can take you places emotionally because she makes intelligent choices her vocal tonality. the production is dark, and sounds like a eerie episode of a twin peaks score. you will be hearing lots more music from her really soon. she is also a great producer as well. ok … the sad truth is we have been searching for this dat close to 6 years since rabbit in the moons david christophere and san diego native sotero finished the project. both mixes were done around winter 95 / 96. despite excitement around the label at the time, eventually the tracks fell to the wayside under the age-old excuse of >figuring out what to do with them<. meanwhile, knowing a good thing when he heard it, three made a dat copy and cut some actetates to play out. they made their way around a good portion of the earth via himself, some friends and one west coast dj who boldly vowed to just put it out on his own --- off the slate --- if we didnt get our act together. fortunately he didnt, but neither did we because both david and three misplaced the dat copies and sotero never had one!
