Sales Informations

The Brooklyn-based duo Native Underground is comprised of producer / DJ Son of Sound (Henry Maldonado) and recording artist Javi (Javi Silva). The duo came together in 2009 while Henry was auditioning singers that channeled the likes of Chaz Jankel, Peter Brown, Imagination and other falsetto-friendly male singers that once dominated the airwaves. Javi answered the call and exceeded Henry’s expectations with a Wham-era George Michael vocal style, equally matching good looks, stage presence, writing ability, and an insatiable hunger for success.

Maldonado spent his formative years in the late ’80s and the ’90s as a native New York underground club-goer, DJ and House producer. A Discog search will immediately associate him with his House 2 House, Urban Rhythm and Rhythm Section releases on seminal US House labels Strictly Rhythm, MAW, King Street, Maxi, Dig It International and many others.
Under the Son of Sound guise, Henry’s recent solo dance-floor contributions include a 12″ on UK disco stalwart Tirk, releases on his own Speak Recordings label, and various remixes for the short list of Nu-disco’s noteworthy.

New York born recording artist Javi (pronounced Haa-Vee) grew up immersed in a musical environment. Since birth Javi has heard tales of his father-a gifted latin percussionist-gracing the stage of Madison Square Garden, playing the legendary Thriller in Manilla, and even logging studio time with DFA records co-founder, Tim Goldsworthy.

With the bar set very high, Javi strives to be equally eclectic and prolific in his musical endeavors. He has sold out venues in NYC’s lower east-side while fronting his funky-pop rock band Chasing the Ghost, and his vocal talent has been called upon on by the likes of Michael Angelakos of Passion Pit, as well as a bevy of other NYC-based music makers.

Henry’s love affair with all things New York, underground, and 12″ vinyl complimented Javi’s penchant for smart pop & edgy indie music. The combination would ultimately evolve Native Underground’s distinct sound into what is best described as a modern-day pop music nod to the post-disco, proto-freestyle and electro-funk sound that graced New York dance-radio airwaves in the ’80s.

Their debut EP entitled “Till It Hurts” was released in the fall of 2010 on Roy Dank’s Wurst Music Co. ‘Till It Hurts toes the post-New Wave and proto-freestyle axes, channeling the sweaty dance-floor madness at Jellybean Benitez’s seminal Funhouse club, where Henry spent his formative years. Native Underground are constantly working on new material, and plan to take their music to stages both local and abroad in the near future. Their fresh sound lends itself to the late night dance-floor crawl, and lyrically-stimulated indie-pop scene alike.

The name Native Underground is an homage to New York City and the musical scenes that nurtured them and their sound. For a taste of New York nostalgia, with a forward thinking approach, just push play.
