in den 1980er jahren waren die züri brännt-krawalle gewalttätige proteste gegen die exorbitanten kultursubventionen der stadt, die auch die kulturprogramme für die zürcher jugend abgebaut hatte. der platzspitzpark war seither für seine prächtigen gärten und seine barocke architektur bekannt, bis er zu einem treffpunkt für heroinkonsumenten wurde und fortan -needle park- genannt wurde. die behörden erlaubten den illegalen drogenkonsum und -verkauf im park, um das problem zu lösen, aber der mangel an vorschriften führte dazu, dass drogenhändler und -konsumenten aus ganz europa anreisten und kriminalität und Überdosen überhand nahmen. zürich verwandelte sich in ein chaos aus gewalt und wut, schlamm und benutzten nadeln. aus dieser atmosphäre entstand die musik auf diesem album. ursprünglich wurde squares and crossings 1986 auf calypso now veröffentlicht und sollte teil einer reihe namens the guild sein, einer sammlung von musik, die von schweizer musikkritikern geschrieben wurde. mario scherrer war der einzige, der auf diese einladung reagierte und somit der einzige, der für dieses projekt verantwortlich war. diese produktionen sind mit punklack überzogen und vermischen gleichzeitig elemente von new wave, pop, musique concrète, improvisation, poesie und ambient, was nur sinn macht, wenn man aus der gleichen stadt kommt wie die heimat des cabaret voltaire, dem geburtsort der dada-bewegung. dieses album ist nicht nur ein künstlerisches tagebuch, sondern hat auch eine ökologische affinität zu dieser momentaufnahme der schweizer geschichte.
