following afrobeat makers vol.1 (sold out), comet is pleased to announce the second volume of the afrobeat makers collection, due for release in june this year: the tony allen’ original afrobeat patterns revisited by few of the best international dj/producers, with among them: doctor l (paris), thiago franca (sao paulo), mps pilot (amsterdam), or gnowee (paris) tony allen has spread afrobeat to the corners of the globe, a perfect synthesis of tradition and sophistication – his various collaborations with great artists from all genres and styles are a truly proof of his openness. doctor l, paris based music producer, is a sound activist going through the musical galaxies, fusioning from 80’s punk rock, to hip-hop, electronica and afrobeat ... in 2000, already on comet records, he brought lagos afrobeat towards the third millennium with the album black voices by tony allen, and even send it to the moon, with his other project, psyco on da bus. since 2002, dj/producer mps pilot (nl) has immersed himself in the cutting-edge tropical bass scene. in every possible direction and slippage between all different genres, mps pilot maps the crosspollination and divergence of contemporary music. he performed on 3 continents, both in remote desert or major festivals. thiago franca is a producer, musician and saxophonist from são paulo arts scene, this year with his power afro-punk trio meta meta, they released for the first time in europe (mais um discos -uk), their debut album metal metal. thiago is meanwhile developping his african rooted solo outfit, sambanzo, and was also in criolo’s touring band for two years, where he met tony allen, which led to two collaborations on the the afrobeat makers and meta meta’ albums.

part two of the ep features the motor city drum ensemble remix, and the original “in a silent mix” version from 1999, a track out of its time when released on allen’s sole record “black voices”. a long serving dekmantel veteran, danilo plessow was there from the start. after compiling the first selector’s compilation last year, mcde turns tony allen’s masterpiece in a jam, with added house beats, giving the funk number the edit treatment. the final mix sounds like the kind of track you would hear mcde play in one of his sets as he’s firing up the heat. the organ sounds and trumpets are left high in the mix, to create an unforgettable hook that resonates throughout, in complete motor city style.

as part of the ten-year anniversary dekmantel presents the final record in a ten-part-ep series. split into two parts due to its immensity, the final instalment is a re-issue of tony allens asiko (in a silent mix) originally released in 1999 and remixes by motor city drum ensemble and ricardo villalobos. the first part features a grandiose 29-minute ricardo villalobos version of the afrobeat masters cut. a true collaboration of giants.having been a regular at the festival for several years now, villalobos delivers a remix, one of his longest to date, that only he can produce. allowing the percussion to breathe into a monumental rhythm, villalobos warps the vocals, restructuring the bass and drums into a rolling dub-fusion of techno that is characteristic of his remixes to date, yet still breathtaking in its execution. afrobeat-minimalism, with dub-infused fire, and near psychedelic ambience that perfectly synchs the worlds of tony allen, and ricardo villalobos, two legends who’ve helped re-shape the face of music. highlighting the diversity of sounds that have come to represent the dutch label and festival series, the eps to date have encompassed a range of artists and genres, featuring label favourites, as well as whole bunch of debuting artists. the ep series kicked off in march 2018, and over the course of a year featured the likes of gigi masin, lena willikens, burnt friedman, donato dozzy, the egyptian lover, palms trax, and more.

part 2 of darren allen’s discobar debut takes us on four more precision mindtrips, exploring further the technological influences found in part 1. on ‘atonement’, clattering percussive and plunging bass come laced with a stinsonesque synth line, creating a flightier vibe. the distorted hum of hardware-gone-haywire introduces ‘scanners’, a convulsed tribute to the cronenburg classic that rounds out this ep in typically trippy style.‘tv sickness’ is a post-perlon prowler, the softened shuffle of its first half returning with renewed vigour after a woozy mid-track breakdown, then reprised in a beatless coda.

blue note is pleased to announce the release of legendary nigerian drummer tony allens new ep, a tribute to art blakey and the jazz messengers. the 4 titles featured in the ep moanin, the drum thunder suite, night in tunisia, politely provide a preview of his forthcoming first album for blue note (currently scheduled for release in autumn 2017) on which tony allen pays tribute to his longstanding idol, american jazz drummer art blakey.the ep s four titles and the other tracks that make up the album were recorded over three days in paris at the midilive studios, the former facility of the vogue label. the sessions were done in live conditions that saw tony allen and his 8-piece band together in the same room, with the sound channelled through 12 separate mikes onto 2-tape via a sony mci-jh24 analogue multi-track recorder.

darren allen joins the family at discobar for a 2-part release, the first containing four abstract grooves disrupted by distinctive sound interventions both synthesised and real. a clock ticking on ‘initiation’ joins rapping snares in giving intent to the track’s floating melodic figures and vocalisations. ‘manitou’ overlays steppy breaks with the rumble and roar of the eponymous heavy-duty vehicle, an invasion of the outside world sure to bewilder some dancefloors.things turn darker with distorted highs and groggy mid-range drift in ’obyvatel’, before the quiet industry of ’molecular’ – its assorted bubbles and rattles both musical and humorous – brings us back to the light.

originally released in 2002, here reissued as a remastered version tony allen talks about the album: after black voices and psyco on da bus albums, i came back with homecooking which was an album filled with guests. i brought in ty, who had remixed some of my work previously, to rap on the record, and damon albarn, who had already sung about me on music is my radar. since the early days ive been trying to find things that everybody will want to listen to. ive always been pushing afrobeat in different directions. heres another one again, another style, almost clean but still rough, raggedy and radical.

after a few digital releases, lunar convoy delivers a masterfully executed debut ep to inaugurate newcomer belgian imprint norite’s vinyl series. counting northern electronics, hypnus records, semantica and prologue among his main influences, lunar convoy’s first effort is utterly coherent while not failing to evoke a plurality of emotions. imbued with sacred atmospheres, infiltrated with mysticism, ritualistic melodies and aesthetically charged rhythms, outer rim territories is a testimony of his love for deeper realms. on the a side, seswenna’s trancey lead synth and pumping bass opens the ep with an excursion towards distant planets. ryloth ventures into darker fields, scattered with whirring and saturated analog complains and haunted by ancient voices. on the flip side, eriadu sets a more mystical pace with syncopated kicks and floating eerie pad, to embark on a parallel dimension. allen’s take on ryloth is symptomatic of the us-based producer, speeding things up and offering a stripped down version filled with devastating hi-hats and firing toms to end this solid 4-tracker with the hypnotic-yet-effective sound that got him signed on attic music, m_rec ltd, polegroup or more recently granulart recordings. with such a captivating release, lunar convoy has set a high bar for the upcoming releases and left us under his sway.

this record was written with the intention of conveying classic aspects of house music. track names such as “paradise garage”, “the warehouse” and “zanzibar club” come from monumental clubs that helped shape the history of house. it s true roots in chicago (the warehouse), to new york city (paradise garage) and new jersey (zanzibar club). this 12 features an heavy low end bass line surrounded by a fuzzy acid, brisk and grubby house beat, lush chords deliberately sitting alongside with crispy clear high end vocals. it s about respecting a legacy, the foundation.
