after metropolitan jazz affair, the dynamics and mr president, master of musical ubiquity bruno ?patchworks? hovart proudly presents uptown funk empire, a burning tribute to one of his all time greatest loves: funk. bruno ?patchworks? hovart, as a self-taught musician and typical teenager, started playling guitar, bass and keyboards at age 15, covering james brown, jimi hendrix and cream in his bedroom and, later in college bands. his first releases are in the mid 90s, with deep house and disco live bands and various electronic projects. he quickly develops and shows very special skills for vintage disco/funk productions with a contemporary flavor. this gifted boy?s been working with artists such as amp fiddler, archie shepp, mr day, paul randolph... and for many recording labels such as i still music (usa), favorite recordings (france), infracom (germany), further out (uk)... uptown funk empire is an exciting and ambitious project, worthy of its name. while the first album is simply called ?the empire strikes back?, it?s no joke... forget the whole revival thing, this sounds like an actual rebirth of the real funky stuff. it?s like being back to the better days of funk without a travel machine... the vibe is vintage but the sound is fresh...that?s not funky music, that?s funky music !

american label beyond the speaker made an impression with their first release angels against dust two years ago, a tasty 12inch split between legowelt & willie burns. for the latest outing, canadian mastermind michael silver aka cfcf (rvng, ghostly, 1080p) celebrates the soul and grooves of house, electro, and techno. three tracks that balance dancefloor hustle, intricate detail and flourishing melodies. lead track head up is a poignant call to the dancefloor, a peak hour house cut with an emergent vocal sample that rallies all for a blissful groove excursion. the b-side is a moodier affair, with mossy wall submerging the listener with potent rhythms as ominous bass intersects with a waking metropolis of melody. and the classic techno sound of sea of love deftly lulls us with gentle vocals and a looping guitar phrase.

loco dice support! its been a while since itamar sagis last release on be as one, when black gold and its remixes got into the most various record boxes around and became one of last year anthems. now, after a row of releases on soma, ovum and klapklap which consolidated his ever growing profile, itamar is back on his home imprint, with a real summer treat. in perfect sagis style, the a side >selio< is an uplifting and punching slab of techno, with a real fat beat and itamars distinctive trademark chord sound. once again another track to be one of the anthems of 2009. b side >series 1< is instead a paced down and trippy number. very atmospherical in the mood but with a bouncy groove, still carries the artist quality imprint. perfect for the summer ending.

stroboscopic artefacts 1st vinyl release is an incendiary 2 track ep. label founder lucy gives us a visionary blueprint for the future stroboscopic artefacts releases, etching out the soundtrack for an apocalyptic club scenario. out of the a-sides dark, pulsing beats and itchy baselines, a granular voice rises up. krishnamurtis rasping vocal cuts through, creating a colossal techno track. the result is a hybrid of the physical need to dance fusing with the cerebral. amid resonant piano samples and utopian 60s strings, a crystalline question emerges: why dont you change? in the middle of a hazy, overcrowded dance floor this peak-time guerrilla track hints at a moment of epiphany. on the b-side dub man walking, lucys dub-roots background collides with his techno identity. the heavy drum machine structure is injected with obsessive dubby baselines and intersected by high frequency distortion. the track floats, the elements never fully solidify, instead they surge forward becoming ever more urgent. lucy mixed and arranged dub man walking live using his faithful mackie ms 1202 to keep the texture warm in an old skool way

techno/ techhouse. forever is a big rocker for the outdoor (summer!!!!) season with warm pleasent vocals and the pads get under the skin. bizarre on the other hand is a dark driving tune and good alternative for those who like it a bit stronger.

nummer comes back with a fresh artist called pherox aka tim querengaesser. pherox gives an impression of the most interesting modern club music today. each track on the pandorra ep oscillate between two sides. on the one hand you feel strong rythm and percussion textures, on the other hand pherox shows his passion of emotive and electrical moments which loom large.
