skinny pelembe corrals together a cast of talented friends for his new ep. it’s his most ambitious release to date, boasting a different group or artist featuring on each of its tracks, each of them an act he’s met through music or through linking with brownswood’s celebrated talent development programme future bubblers two years ago. across its four entries, he bridges hip-hop, psych-rock and jazz-influenced tangents, cutting out a diverse cross-section of the city’s music scene. it’s a document of the connections he’s made as an artist, and is the most collaborative project he’s worked on so far. the title of the ep comes from some advice which skinny noted to himself on an old notebook. each of its songs started as a rough idea which was then fleshed out and re-imagined with his collaborators.

recorded in philadelphia in 1969, the deirdre wilson tabac’s sole album is a beautiful blend of funk, jazz and soulful pop. possessing the complex grooves, thrilling breaks and ethereal weirdness that the rotary connection pedalled so brilliantly, the lp failed to connect with audiences upon its original release.
in the decades since, it has deservedly attracted a considerable cult following. however, almost inevitably, it has become increasingly tricky to pick up a copy in good condition for anything less than eye-watering sums. as such, we’re delighted to present the first officially licensed vinyl reissue of this undoubted masterpiece of freaky funk-rock, limited to just 500 copies.

the chisa years: 1965–1975 (rare and unreleased) is a compilation album by south african jazz trumpeter hugh masekela. the album consists of 14 rare or forgotten tracks recorded by stewart levine and hugh masekela from 1965 to 1975 when they ran their own chisa records label. thom jurek of allmusic wrote “in sum, there isn’t a weak moment on this entire collection. it’s appeal is wide and deep and one can only hope this is the first of many volumes of this material to appear. bbe records has done a stellar job in making this slab available.” dan nishimoto of the prefix magazine stated “the compilation focuses on masekela’s original idea of “african american music.” from the early experiments of the zulus (a group featuring m’bulu) in mixing doo-wop, rhythm & blues and south african gospel and the mbaqanga/”grazing in the grass”-style work of the generically named johannesburg street band to the clearly fela-influenced ojah (masekela’s band in the mid-’70s, consisting of players from ghana and nigeria) and the readyfor-primetime belting of m’bulu, each track reveals a multi-pronged effort to find and challenge the notion(s) of how african and american cultural forms could interact.”

rather than rely on their usual full band, live performance, one-room live single recording session, the making of ‘dragonz’ was a departure for the apples. a multi-studio project spanning three continents, they assembled new instrumental tracks based on loops created in the studio and presented them to a wide-ranging selection of vocal collaborators to complete the picture with, and applied this method to the capturing of longstanding live favourites as well. the concept of a “vocal album” was implemented on non-vocalist songs as well, treating the omnipresent turntables’ sample work not as the central element to the band, but rather its frontman. though containing disparate influences, guests and production methods, ‘dragonz’ is undeniably apples, might be their most focused lp to date, and it is certainly their most middle-eastern. elements of the region’s indigenous genres have always been present in the band’s work, but never has their influence been as pronounced.

TAITU - SOUL-FUELLED STOMPERS FROM 1960S-1970S ETHIOPIA (3X12 LP)
3x12" Vinyl UK19.02.18
ernesto chahoud’s ‘taitu’ is a collection of soul-fuelled stompers straight from the dancefloors of 1970s addis ababa. a breathless journey through the unique ethio sound that bands were forging at the time, the 24-track compilation is the result of the lebanese dj and crate digger’s decadelong love affair with the ‘golden age’ of ethiopian music.
(lp + dl) born and raised on the common desire of bass player mattias geernaert and drummer marius couvreur to groove and dance on the dub vibes.born and raised on the common desire of bass player mattias geernaert and drummer marius couvreur to groove and dance on the dub vibes.kosmo sound saw daylight in late summer of 2016 when these two ghent based musicians found one another. after a few jam sessions and brainstorms they started searching for like minded colleagues and added 4 wonderful masters of sound. two guitar players (cyriel vandenabeele and edmund lauret), one keyboard player (bos debusscher) and one saxophone player (ambroos de schepper). this bands sound can definitely be described as dub influenced. making people dance and drift away in groove and trance is what they stand for. because of their background in jazz they sometimes add some improvisations.

idris muhammad was an american jazz drummer who recorded extensively with many musicians, including bob james, ahmad jamal, lou donaldson, pharoah sanders, john scofield, george benson, lonnie smith and tete montoliu. power of soul is his best known album and is one of the reasons that idris muhammad is regarded as the drumming king of groove. featuring the arrangements and keyboards of bob james, the saxophone punch of grover washington, jr., guitarist joe beck, trumpeter randy brecker, percussionist ralph macdonald, and the knife-edge slick production of creed taylor, this 1974 album is a burning piece of deep, jazzy soul and grooved-out bliss.
remastered audio on 180 gram audiophile vinyl.
known for housing a famous beastie boys sample, the reissue of the 1975 funk and fusion classic funk factory brings peerless polish and american players together for a groovy, eccentric journey. it was an album cut from this lp that captured a particular corner of the music-geek imagination for more than 40 years: “rien ne va plus,” from the self-titled 1975 album, had its reckoning with the canon when the dust brothers sampled major chunks of it for beastie boys’ “car thief.” “rien ne va plus” is a banger, all post-head hunters springy synth-bass. as for the rest of the album, funk factory can stray pretty far into the cheerier excesses of prog-jazz. it emphasizes the alluring strangeness of its more experimental moments, like the hallucinogenic haunted-house tour of “lilliput” or the banshee james brown vocal riffs on “horsing around.” “rien ne va plus” remains the top highlight. this album is proof that a core of musicians schooled in jazz but culturally steeped in the folk and classical traditions of eastern europe could, at least once, put out something that fit well with the crossover sound of the times while being unafraid to dive into freeform weirdness.

originally released in march 2006 and virtually impossible to procure on vinyl ever since, bbe are excited to announce a special ten year anniversary edition of the classic visioneers album dirty old hip hop on translucent, orange coloured double vinyl.
does this need an explanation? my two favourite dj sides from stark reality catalog, for say brother i fixed the eq and made it a bit more club friendly also editing the crazy tripped out ending out which maybe controversial but always freaked the dance floor out so i cut that out to gain some extra volume and bass. on the flip we got bustin out of doors which has always been a favourite warm-up record again without the random ending. to make it extra cute i used the o.g hoagy carmichael’s music shop illustration. 500 only, no repress.
the album shows how the ideals of the civil rights movement, black power and black nationalism influenced the evolvement of radical african-american music in the united states of america in the intensely political and revolutionary period at the end of the 1960s following the assassinations of malcolm x, martin luther king and the rise of the black panther party.
featuring groundbreaking artists such as gil scott-heron, roy ayers, don cherry, oneness of juju, sarah webster fabio, horace tapscott, phil ranelin and many others, soul of a nation shows how political themes led to the rise of ‘conscious’ black music as new afro-centric styles combined the musical radicalism and spirituality of john coltrane and radical avant-garde jazz music alongside the intense funk and soul of james brown and aretha franklin and the urban poetry and proto-rap of the streets.
double gatefold vinyl album edition comes with full colour inners + bonus download code and includes full sleeve-notes/photography.
travelling without moving 1996 intentionally offers more of what jamiroquai does best: highly addictive funky grooves with a social consciousness that is matched by front man jay kays charisma. the third effort of jamiroquai was carried by an inventive video for *virtual insanity*, the albums flagship song.
pressed on two audiophile heavy weight champions packed in a gatefold sleeve, travelling without moving is finally available on vinyl again, this time with remastered audio for maximum aural pleasure!
during the 1970s, innovative musicians redefined the sound of jazz, funk, and soul music, digging deeper than ever before to unearth powerful new sonic textures. one such pioneer was keyboardist weldon irvine, a jazz-funk luminary who released some of the most revered recordings of the era. irvine’s 1975 album “spirit man” is a true masterpiece, full of infectious grooves and otherworldly electronic elements. entirely composed, arranged, conducted, and produced by irvine himself, the album remains a potent artistic statement, both deeply spiritual and intensely funky. crate diggers may recognize the opening track “we gettin’ down”, which was sampled by a tribe called quest for their classic single “award tour”. now, “spirit man” is back in print on limited-edition vinyl, complete with updated artwork. order this official deluxe reissue now!
this record is a collaborative between marq spekt and experimental, proto-new wave musician gary wilson (stones throw). it’s rare that you get the opportunity to work with the actual artist rather than just sampling his records. gary opened his vaults and provided sample soundscapes. some of these instrumentals date back to 1973 and may have been heard before. others may not. the ending result is a pure creative expression and meshes hip-hop, psychedelic, jazz and funk. soak up the vibrations and enjoy!
this is the kind of idea that makes you enjoy the fringes of rap more than what’s in the spotlight. with that said, “broken mazes” sounds weirder on paper than it does in the headphones. gary wilson is an awesomely strange dude with some outré music under his belt, but for this project spekt wisely sticks with the more accessible sides of wilson’s catalog. it’s all breezy jazz-funk with some vague psychedelic touches for extra oomph, a wide-open feld for spekt to run his free-flowing bars. the result is relaxed and enjoyable, if at times a bit unfocused – kinda like a good open-ended improv session by a talented jazz band.
best selling sophomore albums are one of the music industry’s rarest gems. one example of such a gem is jamiroquai’s second album “return of the space cowboy”. improving on their infectious blend of funky r&b and acid jazz, jamiroquai delivered “return of the space cowboy” in 1994, hitting the charts with a vengeance and amassing global recognition as the leading pop funk band.
incredibly groovy and tight, jamiroquai expanded their compositions into the realms of jazz and this was accompanied by a positive but critical message regarding human rights and environmental issues. the hits “space cowboy” and “light years” propelled “return of the space cowboy” into all-time favourite status among alternative pop lovers all over the world. now with enhanced and remastered audio, pressed on audiophile 180 gram vinyl.
reissue of the highly sought after nigerian funk-rock album, moving effortlessly between reggae, jazzy afrobeat and psych rock. soundway fans first got a taste of jay-u’s infectious beats with the track ‘some more’, featured on the soundway compilation “nigeria disco funk special: the sound of the underground lagos dancefloor 1974-79”. originally released by emi nigeria in 1977, this now-rare album was written by jay-u and engineered by disco-boogie artist goddy oku. opening with the up-tempo reggae number “reggae deluxe”, the album descends into mind-blowing jazz-funk featuring several killer saxophone solos. the journey ends with a trip into psych-prog rock, with a sound not dissimilar to that coming out of the early 70s british rock scene.
the message at the depth is underground rap for the digital age, far removed from the moldy crates and dusty beats of krushs mo wax classic strictly turntablized. his beats are digital, heavily resampled and quantized, splintering off like drum n bass patterns but possessing a depth and clarity not seen since the heyday of massive attack.

the equally strong -taste and see- on the flipside provides the only lyrical reference to hawai (-mangos and papayas got flavors of their own-) while remaining in line with mehl s smooth west coast vibe - he hired two of chuck mangione s colleagues for the recording, guitarist steve o conner and horn player john rekevics.

homeys records new release, something new, features the first collaboration between marina p and the upcoming french producer ksd. once the original track was completed, the vocals were given to three other producers close to the italian singer for remixing. stand high patrol’s version offers a jazzy take on the track with unexpected footwork influences. twm, for his very first release, presents a steppers version made for the soundsystem. homeys brings a roots reggae touch with a flute part that leads the theme.
a bona-fide nigerian prince and probably the only musician to have ever played with fela kuti, miles davis and bob marley, eji oyewole combined african highlife with western jazz to create a hybrid so that was as smooth as it was funky. his first album, charity begins at home was an angry tirade against corruption in nigeria. me & you is his ‘relationship’ album, a brighter and happier set of songs that sees eji all loved up, presumably with the mysterious ‘cameleon’ featured on the cover. eji’s flute is no longer a strident voice raised in anger. instead, on ‘me & you’ and ‘i’m a dancer’ it is a playful line of seduction. on the wonky and woozy ‘eniafelamo’ his sax is a post-coital salutation. even the one political track, ‘long live nigeria’, is a loved up call for peace, progress and trust. chilled, assured and dexterious, me & you is a sophisticated showcase of eji oyewole’s chops. ‘this is the beginning of an atomic musical evolution,’ he declares on the cover. ‘brothers and sisters, stay cool.’
7” release mit zwei tracks aus dem selbstbetitelten harlem river drive debütalbum (1971) um die brüder eddie und charlie palmieri, zweier giganten der latin-jazz-fusion. “seeds of life” erscheint erstmals in voller albumlänge auf 7” vinyl.
josé james is reborn as a powerful voice in contemporary r&b on “love in a time of madness”. even for an artist as creatively restless as james, “love in a time of madness” is something new: an r&b focused foray into moody soul, electronic pop, and trap-addled beats, with the occasional influence of african folk, american gospel and minneapolitan funk. and though james’ voice is no less agile and his ear no less adventurous, this is also his most relatable, daresay sexiest work yet, detailing love’s ups and downs without holding back an ounce of emotion.
luv n’haight is proud to re-issue sweet maya’s self-titled album. a midwest jazz-funk classic with elements of folk, jazz, soul, funk and rock combining to create a heady blend reminiscent of ‘70s work by french band cortex and songwriting maestro terry callier.

fabio fabor is a mysterious composer and musician who wrote mostly operas, symphonies and chamber music, but also experimental and electronic library music, the latter being the case of this release: short tracks aiming to accompany radio and tv shows, orchestral pop a la bacharach, space age pop, hints of bossa and beat from the previous decade. originally published by the legendary seri e usignolo, a sub-label of fonit, this hard-to-find title is finally available again thanks to schema records
