known for housing a famous beastie boys sample. the reissue of the 1975 funk and fusion classic funk factory brings peerless polish and american players together for a groovy. eccentric journey. it was an album cut from this lp that captured a particular corner of the music-geek imagination for more than 40 years: “rien ne va plus.” from the self-titled 1975 album. had its reckoning with the canon when the dust brothers sampled major chunks of it for beastie boys’ “car thief.” “rien ne va plus” is a banger. all post-head hunters springy synth-bass. as for the rest of the album. funk factory can stray pretty far into the cheerier excesses of prog-jazz. it emphasizes the alluring strangeness of its more experimental moments. like the hallucinogenic haunted-house tour of “lilliput” or the banshee james brown vocal riffs on “horsing around.” “rien ne va plus” remains the top highlight. this album is proof that a core of musicians schooled in jazz but culturally steeped in the folk and classical traditions of eastern europe could. at least once. put out something that fit well with the crossover sound of the times while being unafraid to dive into freeform weirdness.

drawing influences from herbie hancock. idris muhammad and grover washington. the single version of breakthrough is a unique. single-take arrangement of the full-length track from the forthcoming lp murmuration. a backbone of hip-hop-breaks influenced beats. accompanied by a jazz-funk infused sound played by some of the most in-demand players in the country.
does this need an explanation? my two favourite dj sides from stark reality catalog. for say brother i fixed the eq and made it a bit more club friendly also editing the crazy tripped out ending out which maybe controversial but always freaked the dance floor out so i cut that out to gain some extra volume and bass. on the flip we got bustin out of doors which has always been a favourite warm-up record again without the random ending. to make it extra cute i used the o.g hoagy carmichael’s music shop illustration. 500 only. no repress.

reginald omas mamode iv has a terrific track record thus far. since delivering his debut 12inch back in 2013. hes barely put a foot wrong. with last years intimate friends released mini-album. all together. being a particular highlight. this debut full-length is every bit as impressive as youd expect. with the peckham producer relying a little less on dusty samples. and rather more on loose. live drums. rubbery bass guitar. dreamy rhodes keys. and other luscious instrumentation. as usual. the assembled tracks effortlessly join the dots between jazzy instrumental hip-hop. neo-soul. mauritian drum workouts. broken beat and humid. tropical-tinged grooves.
the album shows how the ideals of the civil rights movement. black power and black nationalism influenced the evolvement of radical african-american music in the united states of america in the intensely political and revolutionary period at the end of the 1960s following the assassinations of malcolm x. martin luther king and the rise of the black panther party.
featuring groundbreaking artists such as gil scott-heron. roy ayers. don cherry. oneness of juju. sarah webster fabio. horace tapscott. phil ranelin and many others. soul of a nation shows how political themes led to the rise of ‘conscious’ black music as new afro-centric styles combined the musical radicalism and spirituality of john coltrane and radical avant-garde jazz music alongside the intense funk and soul of james brown and aretha franklin and the urban poetry and proto-rap of the streets.

the haggis horns are a funk-fuelled powerhouse that rock audiences the world over. they rip up the dancefloor with the virtuosity of trained jazz musicians combining heavy breakbeat funk. soul. hip-hop and afrobeat. the group has thousands of gigs under their belt and have played with household names such as mark ronson. jamiroquai. martha reeves & the vandellas. amy winehouse. john legend & the roots and the brand new heavies.
after the success of hot damn!. keep on moving and what comes to mind their next album shows the boys blasting out their unique brand of dance floor funk with regular collaborators lucinda slim and john mccallum on tracks ranging from up beat breaks to down tempo slinkyness. also on the album is rapper doc brown who helps create a distinctive hip-hop feel that runs through their latest studio offering.
travelling without moving 1996 intentionally offers more of what jamiroquai does best: highly addictive funky grooves with a social consciousness that is matched by front man jay kays charisma. the third effort of jamiroquai was carried by an inventive video for *virtual insanity*. the albums flagship song.
pressed on two audiophile heavy weight champions packed in a gatefold sleeve. travelling without moving is finally available on vinyl again. this time with remastered audio for maximum aural pleasure!
this record is a collaborative between marq spekt and experimental. proto-new wave musician gary wilson (stones throw). it’s rare that you get the opportunity to work with the actual artist rather than just sampling his records. gary opened his vaults and provided sample soundscapes. some of these instrumentals date back to 1973 and may have been heard before. others may not. the ending result is a pure creative expression and meshes hip-hop. psychedelic. jazz and funk. soak up the vibrations and enjoy!
this is the kind of idea that makes you enjoy the fringes of rap more than what’s in the spotlight. with that said. “broken mazes” sounds weirder on paper than it does in the headphones. gary wilson is an awesomely strange dude with some outré music under his belt. but for this project spekt wisely sticks with the more accessible sides of wilson’s catalog. it’s all breezy jazz-funk with some vague psychedelic touches for extra oomph. a wide-open feld for spekt to run his free-flowing bars. the result is relaxed and enjoyable. if at times a bit unfocused – kinda like a good open-ended improv session by a talented jazz band.
best selling sophomore albums are one of the music industry’s rarest gems. one example of such a gem is jamiroquai’s second album “return of the space cowboy”. improving on their infectious blend of funky r&b and acid jazz. jamiroquai delivered “return of the space cowboy” in 1994. hitting the charts with a vengeance and amassing global recognition as the leading pop funk band.
incredibly groovy and tight. jamiroquai expanded their compositions into the realms of jazz and this was accompanied by a positive but critical message regarding human rights and environmental issues. the hits “space cowboy” and “light years” propelled “return of the space cowboy” into all-time favourite status among alternative pop lovers all over the world. now with enhanced and remastered audio. pressed on audiophile 180 gram vinyl.

a bona-fide nigerian prince and probably the only musician to have ever played with fela kuti. miles davis and bob marley. eji oyewole combined african highlife with western jazz to create a hybrid so that was as smooth as it was funky. his first album. charity begins at home was an angry tirade against corruption in nigeria. me & you is his ‘relationship’ album. a brighter and happier set of songs that sees eji all loved up. presumably with the mysterious ‘cameleon’ featured on the cover. eji’s flute is no longer a strident voice raised in anger. instead. on ‘me & you’ and ‘i’m a dancer’ it is a playful line of seduction. on the wonky and woozy ‘eniafelamo’ his sax is a post-coital salutation. even the one political track. ‘long live nigeria’. is a loved up call for peace. progress and trust. chilled. assured and dexterious. me & you is a sophisticated showcase of eji oyewole’s chops. ‘this is the beginning of an atomic musical evolution.’ he declares on the cover. ‘brothers and sisters. stay cool.’

slick. sultry and sublime rnb infused with soul & jazz. originating in belgium at the tail end of the 1960s and into the 70’s. popcorn was a music and dance scene with an emphasis on often obscure black american records of the then recent past. drawing immediate parallels with the uk’s northern soul scene from approximately the same time. young people would flock from all corners of belgium to cram into a converted farmhouse barn to dance to these exotic sounds. but whilst northern favoured an often uptempo. stomping 60’s soul sound. popcorn focused almost entirely on slower. moodier numbers.

magus mountain opens with the chords of an acid-soaked troubadour. the guitars wavering harmony summoning the band into position. thunder strikes in the form of hammering drums. and the journey to magus mountain begins! the song rollicks along. and its clarion horn lines are the fanfare for this wild romp into a mix of 70s rock influences. the budos band delivers you to the peak of their creative forces on thus track. and the view from the summit of magus mountain is a wonder to behold.
for this project fredfades remixes nine of his favorite rap songs. dense layers of samples from hard to find records. crisp drums and ruthless bass lines are some of the ingredients fred uses to create new versions of these hip-hop gems. some of them seem to have come out edgier and more interesting than the original songs. legendary to some. obscure to others. all the acapellas have been laced with the jazzyness fades has become known to represent. all beats via one were produced on the cult status sp1200 machine (the street smartz beat was produced using the mpc 2000xl). a few of the tracks were co-produced by deckdaddy & john rice (oslo sp ensemble). the result is a wide range of super tight raps and the distinct and consistent style of a young producer with an old soul. if you appreciate timeless rap flows over some bold reinventions of the golden era sound. this is a must cop record!
