label head steven rutter joins forces with john shima (fs005) on this bright ep with its direction turned towards the light. the heavenly ‘skywards’ leads the way upwards with tenderly treated spacious drum programming and light-as-air atmospherics while darker and deeper cavernous tones create the yin-yang balance of lightness and dark. ‘broken spell’ continues the uplifted vibe of a spell that when broken. blooms open with an intoxicating permeating sweetness like an exotic fragrance that lingers in one’s memory. ‘a new day’ leans slightly more towards a heavier driven track featuring a funky bassline with bright electronic notations as counterpoint while drifting. dreamy pads keep the overall mood airy and light. the off-kilter knob is turned way right on the bouncy final track ’disjointed route’. injecting dashes of wry quirk alongside a lightly moving groove.

supporting the ep are two excellent remixes from renowned artists sascha funke and simple symmetry. sascha funke s elegantly dark version creeps in with a hypnotic and captivating energy while simple symmetry moves into party mode with pop sensible guitars and heavy wonkiness perfect for picking up the vibe at any party.

david mayer’s career and background is marked by a desire to keep moving and experiencing new perspectives. having finally settled in berlin. the german dj and producer has built up an enviously diverse back catalogue on labels such as connected frontline. objektivity. gruuv. audiomatique and keinemusik. with his first release on acid pauli and nico stojan’s ouie label. mayer brings his trademark groove to the fore once more. ‘the call’ is a mid tempo chugger built around a kick. clap and 808 blip. before a more organic groove develops. the slowed down chants and wigged out synth line take the vibe into afro cosmic territory. without losing the original energy. ‘sooner’ is a little more urgent - a crisp. forward leaning rhythm and a deep. subby bass lead the way. before another frazzled synthesiser takes us on a melodic walkabout. ‘black queen’ is another example of mayer’s slick drum programming. keeping things zesty on the dance floor but with acres of space to lose yourself in.

a chance encounter at university during the acid house summer of ’88 and subsequent bonding over baby ford’s “oochy koochy” established a life-long friendship between leicester lads. jimi o’callaghan and al green. inspired by the sounds of detroit. early ny house like murk and masters at work and the emerging uk sounds of lfo. orbital and aphex twin. the pair began djing and making music as the wild geese. their first ep. “the wild geese ep”. was released in 1994 on their own giddy goose recordings imprint. the guys pressed 500 copies and. with jimi’s connections made interning with pete tong’s ffrr. sold copies direct to london shops. the record sported packaging designed to look like an american 12” and an accompanying press release attributed the ep to a fictitious dj duo hailing from wisconsin. rave reviews followed and a distribution deal was struck with vital uk. who produced and sold another 500 copies worldwide. another ep followed a year later. sadly. plans for a third ep on the label never materialized. but the pair remain close to this day. 24 years later we are honored to reintroduce this genre-defying. uniquely forward-thinking ep to today’s dance floors.
