my rules storms into 2018 with the raw machine music project happy family from eric duncan and justin van der volgen. a side downtown wedgeee kicks off with twisted acid lines and drunken arpeggios which build and build until completely going off the rails, then finishing with ethereal pads and metallic percussion. b side bad monks ups the tempo and goes even further into woozy psychedelic territory with thick dizzying drones and a smeared pounding analogue rhythm.

happa kicks off the year with the third 12 on his pt5 imprint and the first of several releases planned for the mercurial leeds producer in 2017. lead track “bum trance” pitches futurist drexciya synth optimism against frantic metallic drum programming adding another level to happas increasingly diverse production armoury. intense punk techno monster hallunciations first appeared in 2015 on various mix tapes and radio shows and now appears in its full release to complete the 12inch

a-side discomix, one of the rarest and best wackie s 12inches, b-side previously unreleased wicked 70s roots! killer vintage bullwackies! the happy love song was originally released on a tribesman 12inch, one of the least known but most killer wackies 12inches of its day. a propulsive rhythm is behind the group licking back the tune cut by the iq s in jamaica a couple years earlier. the b-side was retrieved from tape, an unknown vocalist extolling the virtues of the roots rock reggae coming from wackie s studio in the turbulent new york city of the 1970s. a must have for all wackie s diehards, another level of the pyramid unearthed, and more to come!

optimo music presents a new offshoot label, so low, named after the night of the same name in glasgow run by becky marshall, iona mchale, jd twitch and katie shambles. first lp release is happy meals “full ashram devotional ceremony volumes iv – vi” out 23rd of june. the inaugural release is from glasgow’s much-loved happy meals, a duo comprised of suzanne rodden and lewis cook and is their second album release after 2014’s acclaimed “apero” on glasgow’s night school label. full ashram is the name of happy meals’ recording studio. the devotional ceremony is happy meals connecting with their cosmic inner selves. they realise their full ashram devotional ceremony on vinyl (and digital) banishing demons, devils and ill will. devote your soul to the positive forces before the misguided, suffering spirits pull you down and wipe you out. while the album is comprised of individual tracks segueing into each other, for full salvation it is recommended to be listened to as one continuous piece.

you might have heard of happa by now. hes the leeds native who first burst onto the electronic scene in 2013 with his blistering 12inch-single beat of the drum/ bring it back, the wildly precocious teenager (also known as samir alikhanizadeh) who won instant fans in the likes of mary anne hobbs, loefah and even four tet, the one who scorched a trail with his dark, bass-heavy sledgehammer house, which sounds quite unlike anything else out there right now.

defected sub-label tenth circle welcomes brighton based nathan pope aka antenna happy to deliver their first release of 2015. following his rapturously received debut pinto from last year, antenna happy draws on decades of musical experience to produce a stunning double-a side. title track dream 2c sits somewhere between house and techno, a slow-burning, emotionally charged cut in which glimmering arpeggiated melodies intertwine to create a unique and beautiful cut. wild stabs is tougher, an acid-flecked progressive stomper that slowly builds into a maelstrom of seething chords and stabs

perc trax unleashes the first of three vinyl eps showcasing the new tracks from the label’s tenth anniversary ‘slowly exploding’ compilation, mixing up label regulars with established names making their perc trax debuts. forward strategy group begin proceedings with the grinding broken beat rhythm of ‘dragons tooth’ before happa opens his perc trax account with a percussive assault that is amongst the most aggressive tracks on these three eps. martyn hare, another perc trax debutant, delivers the awakenings festival slaying ‘the new normal’ to kick off the b-side and us producers mick finesse and pinion team up for the first time on the b2 with the industrial amen groover that is ‘dead boyfriend alley’...

happy meals is the glasgow-based duo of suzanne rodden and lewis cook, life-partners since high school finding expression in cosmic form.

a twenty year break away from making music is almost unheard of especially within electronic music circles, but that is where antenna happy finds himself with pinto. clocking in at 9.09 pinto draws from psychedelia and techno set straight for the sun. this kaleidoscopic sonic excursion has all the makings of a cult classic, and heads up the debut 12- release on newly founded imprint reinhardt records. taking lead on the b-side an entirely different affair in the shape of fallen. this is benchmark electronic music, as arpeggiators take flight mirrored against hypnotic acid bass, for a journey into the outer house territories. closing the ep, spark holds the reigns. conceived within the same stretch as pinto, however it wasn t until some months later that spark took on its full form. emotive modular synths lay the groundwork, connecting the dots between low-slung techno and house music, culminating in a track that sits in neither genre camp. spark will appear on the digital release only. the ep title track takes its name and inspiration from paintings by antenna happy s three-year-old daughter, whose birth inspired him to return to making music. close-ups of these paintings can be seen in the artwork for the release.
