known for their take on the gentler side of house music, jazz pianists, electronic enthusiasts and label founders of the analogue attic imprint, albrecht labrooy have joined night tides family with their latest sojourn emissary ep. the release began with a concept from the artists, who asked for field recordings taken by night tides eluize from around her adopted home in berlin. sounds from parks, gardens, trains and stations that make up the local, everyday sonic landscape made their way across the atlantic to arrive in albrecht labrooys studio, where they were used as inspiration for the three outings on this record. the melbourne duo’s live approach to programming and arrangement can be heard as the tracks ebb and flow effortlessly. in tempelhof sub swells and a throbbing kick accompany delicate leads and lightly touched drums. the more uptempo hinterhof pulses and sways with lively percussion, crystalline bells, euphoric strings and softly spoken melodies that float in and out of view. u-bahn/s-bahn begins with glistening top lines and panoramic chords over a growling bass and a steady groove. as the journey rolls on from the underground into open-air window-gazing territory, the piece takes an ambient, beatless turn. contemplative synth lines and arpeggios play while the station announcements drift somewhere in the distance. photograph by christophe mauberqué.

as one third of the founding trio of revered cologne imprint magazine, jens-uwe beyer has become an obvious choice for any adept of open-minded electronic music, both through releases such as the one-track-one-hour manifesto red book (magazine 008), several contributions to our pop ambient compilation series or inspired remixes for barnt, dream weapons and others. besides this being the same mastermind as the one behind the ongoing popnoname brand, you wouldn t expect upcoming the emissary to actually be a debut, but it is, for it s the very first time that we re treated to a full-length offering under the artists real name.

artefacts of rotation is asc at his experimental best. once again, the theme is one of deep space exploration, showing a natural progression from return of the emissary, and sitting somewhere between that and the recent album, astral projection. hypnotic drum programming, spiralling atmospheric elements, layers of sublime pads, plus the usual healthy dose of bass - it’s all here in abundance, ready for the listener to don their space suit and dive in head first.

on thanksgiving 1989, kmart employee and audio enthusiast mark davis wandered behind the customer service desk to check out the store’s sound system, which looped muzak and top 40 plus ads and announcements under the banner of “kmrt, the kmart radio network.” when he found last month’s tape hadn’t been thrown out yet, he pocketed it and made a habit of doing this, collecting 56 tapes from 1989-1992. in september 2015, davis uploaded the tapes to archive.org with the humble intention of preserving them. but within a few weeks he became an internet celebrity among obscure media fans and supplemented the collection with reel-to-reel tapes from the 70s and 80s thanks to tom schwarzrock, who acquired them serendipitously along with a deck he purchased. the tapes are like a consumerist time capsule, a vaporwave trove of eerily familiar corporate ephemera extracted from its original context and purpose. similarly, attention kmart choppers is composed of pieces from this collection chopped up, resculpted, and mosaicked together by juicy the emissary, forming a new, distinctly contemporary sound while inheriting a haunting nostalgia that provokes memories burrowed deep in the subconscious
