lyon-based beatsmith ethyène has patented a certain style of mid-tempo house music applying a french touch aesthetic to disco, r&b and hip-hop sample references. through releases on longtime underground favorite kolour ltd and upstart labels like kyoku, as well as contributions to his own moonrise hill material, the frenchman has quickly built a sought after discography. his collaboration with better listen comes at an interesting time, as he seems to really be refining his sound, maturing sonically and honing the synthesis of the aforementioned influences to something nicely unique. the playin with fire ep is a deliciously bittersweet four track affair. the a1 slot sees e joining forces with his homie, the much acclaimed folamour, for the superlative why my love. meanwhile, loneliness of the shadow dancer- continues the r&b cream vibes, combining a classic head-nodding hip-hop flip with a soul chorus. the b-side gets a bit moodier, with the title track climatically building on hypnotically deep riffs and vocals and i sold yayo to buy kicks serving as the bob james-esque closer. the package is a cohesive reflection of a pensive and slightly anguished mindstate, with boom bap cultural influences and his familiar philadelphia streets functioning as the canvas. dont be surprised if this record serves as a point of stylistic elevation for the young producer, with plenty more of this new ammunition in the chamber. and you know the saying: if you play with fire, you might turn into a scorching hot phoenix.

sliding into french press lounge’s second 12” in a reasonably priced used car on rain-soaked tarmac is hollywood, fl producer saki. known for his famously crispy, nearly-obliterated sound and rude-dude attitude, saki pulls down the gain (and the sun shades) to provide four hazy coastal house tools fit to blast over the comm system above the lazy river, relying on a no-frills hardware setup (homie needs floppy discs to even play a track!) and a rough-and-ready live recording policy, complete with abrupt endings.

brand new label south street kicks off with everyones favourite californian homie, urulu. having previously contributed to andy hart s voyage label as well as dirt crew and let s play house he steps up and delivers four upfront house cuts for the labels inaugural release. a sublime start for this one to watch label.

this up and coming producer is already a legend amongst the crew of techno freaks in brooklyn. with previous releases on local imprint lovers rock, and releases slated for proibito and exotic dance under the the aliases dj python and dj xanax, dj wey aka brian pinyero has contributed a massive 12” to bank records. the a side “song for masahiro” is dedicated to masahiro ueda, a dj and friend who graced the bk scene by way of japan. it’s a bass heavy tune with melodic pads floating in the forefront amongst the occasional cheering sample. it s perfect for either opening or closing a set midsummer. in contrast, the b side opens with “flow on.” with its distorted kicks, relentless claps and hypnotic bells one could imagine hearing it on a nightmarish carnival ride...fit that into a set. the record ends on an electro tip with spaced out pads, backwards samples and classic electro style drum patterns. distinct in sound and diverse in approach, don t sleep on the homie dj wey.

we pressed the 4 track hot pack of multi culti beats on a limited run of 500 jungle green records. in case you missed it, heres what the ep is all about: soul clap records welcomes one of the most unique artists in the game and he goes by the name bosq. a longtime boston homie, bosq (also known for his work with dj kon and the whiskey barons) first astounded us with his orquestra y madera album (ubiquity records) which put a modern dance floor twist on afro/latin funk and provided some of our biggest dj bombs that year. continuing to build the bridge we released his edit of fela kuti s opposite people (gator boots), collaborated on higher for our dotc vol.2 compilation (soul clap records) and we remixed his single bad for me from his sophomore celestial strut album (ubiquity records). this release is also accompanied by a sister record of remixes by auntie flo and caserta on limited yellow vinyl.

dave aju has been a black catalogue homie from nearly the beginning and we are excited to have him on board with this fantastic, wide-ranging ep of underground house bombs. all three tracks invoke underground soul/rnb and house a la detroit legend moodymann, but with that trademark aju twist

lenzman is back on metalheadz with his first original work since his debut album looking at the stars. the ep is everything you would expect from lenzman, soulful and well produced.

d-pulse trippy album consequenced now got first portion of remixes from band s favorite producers. ron basejam of crazy p delivers a straight-forward disco gem, while harvey sutherland goes minimal and atmospheric in his unexpectedly laid back remix. rj being a one half of durerstruben sends the original waltz on the run back in 2000 s on a summer cruise and d-pulses homie sportloto pours some fuel into the russian cosmic-disco scene rocket.

so we went predominanlty stateside for our last outing, and decided to bring things back home this time. hoya003 is a strictly uk affair. opening up on the a-side is one of rudest producers and djs the uk has going for it. this aint a comment on her manners though, they are as impeccable as her production. after ikonika sent us a zip of some hoya potentials, we just knew >fleas< had to be the one featured on this 12 inch. a more sinister, rolling, emotional jam, it still packs as much as punch as ikonikas dj sets. kicking off the b-side is the homie om unit. now, this guy … this guy. are there any superlatives left to desribe his sonic masterpieces that have rocked too many dancefloors and had as many producers scratching their heads and re-assessing their mix-downs? an instant favourite, >fibonnaci 10< was one of the earliest cuts lined up for a release and when you listen you will see why. this guy. seriously. bringing things to a close, we hand over to one of our favourites from the flourishing cardiff scene. why doesnt monky have more music out? is one of those questions that has been asked too many times for our liking. so much so, we may have to take it upon ourselves to change that. but, for now, just enjoy >hipster<. a killer synth-laden nod to early ukg, but looking forward as opposed to sideways. enjoy.
