in the late 80s i started listening to uk radio stations when i was a little kid and i instantly fell in love with the acid sound and rave movement that was portrayed on those uk dance shows. when i got old enough to attend clubs and warehouse raves, to experience the movement first hand, it was a nobrainer for me that the music and the lifestyle was my call. lately…. in my dj sets and when producing music… i have been time travelling back to those days. back to how i remember the music i fell so deeply in love with and that is exactly what you hear on this “done/undone” release. for the “done” track i teamed up with cari golden to have a female spoken word and a great message to build the music around. i always prefer to do original vocal recordings rather than using samples. cari understood 100% what i was after and i love the lyrics and execution by her. the spoken word is centered, very clear and deep to contrast the constantly building intensity of the acid patterns and thumping beats. “undone” is instrumental and has a more straight forward flow to it. it’s quite simple although the shifting groove patterns might surprise some. i was torn between two different acid patterns and decided to drop one of them as a surprise change. playing the track in clubs i quickly learned that the change of dynamics had a great effect. both tracks have been wrapped in dark-themed chords and atmosphere. both tracks have my take on the sound i fell in love with years ago and obviously still love today. i hope you like what you hear.

nice price deal !!! after a busy summer of festival dates and sun-drenched summer parties, hotflush are back to attend to their autumn release schedule, the first of which welcomes a new collaborative project from two anonymous producers, united under the guise of nefertt. both producers have become synonymous with a distinct and versatile approach to music-making. between them, they have covered everything from hip-hop, dubstep, drone, ukg, soul, jungle, broken-beat and electronica int he body of their own previous productions. this new collaboration sees the pair invoke a slightly more dance floor-orientated spirit, taking a marked step away from the heavily swung, nervy house / garage hybrids of their previous material, preferring to focus on irrestistible groove and lush melody.

following on from last years exceptional ‘obsession ep’ from art crime is a budding young talent by the name of will lister. originally from lyme regis, will moved up to london to attend goldsmiths university and in his spare time he helps us out behind the counter here at the shop. when he’s not here at the shop you can also hear him playing records on his balamii radio show or his monthly club night, ‘the aten’. ‘the phantom ep’ is his production debut and we’re extremely happy to be putting it out on our main imprint. the title track opens up the ep with heavily reverbed pads, echoed claps, crunchy percussion and repetitive synth stabs that all work together to create spaced-out atmosphere that’s full of twist and turns. flipping over to the b-side, ‘after the light’ picks up the pace with a driving high-hat rhythm and full-bodied kicks that underpin warm piano keys and smooth synth lines. ‘agency’ closes proceedings by turning up the intensity to full with a masterclass in building tension.

dojo is about getting back to the roots of american techno and house, and getting away from the computer. we want to help bring back the spontaneity and freedom of live performance and recordings. we want to celebrate the raw physicality of the music, and the dj who still likes to mix. ross since, 1997, ross has been in the background of the westcoast canadian techno scene, particularly the victoria family that included mathew jonson, cobblestone jazz, the mole, and hrdvsion. in 1998, he released the now out-of-print compilation album ôgarden city dubs, that featured first material by mathew jonson, and cobblestone jazz. he left for california in æ98, but kept his finger on the pulse as the art director for itiswhatitis recordings. while in the bay area, he listened mostly to soul,rap and early american techno music. heavily influenced by his time spent in the u.s., he started to develop a musical aesthetic, which he is now ready to express. young florent florent moved to vancouver from switzerland to attend art school. he began to get into making techno. tapping into his french-martinique roots, florent quickly developed a unique sound, which caught rossÆs ear. a few live jams later, it was clear that they worked well together, so they got a studio space and got to work. one month later, dojo had its first release. florent has only been making music for a year, but his swiss work-ethic is dangerous
