having been an electronic activist in marseille for more two decades and more, dj oil is now a firm staple of lddlm. following the rain ep released in the summer 2016, here is the first 2018 outing from us: the already bubbling heritage ep. heritage has been an ivan smagghe (and a few others) secret weapon for more than a year now, a strange sampladelic track featuring a full marcus garvey speech. a subtle yet powerful appropriation of early house cliches, the hit has one feet in tradition, one feet in political modernity. the ep comes with two more warped cuts: the slow guitar swamp of brouillage and the system 01/mckenna influenced may be. psychedelics and sun. a second 12inch by dj oil will follow shortly, doubled with a full digital release of the two eps with digital extras. expect new releases from our camp by rheinzand, init, johnson and more

what attracts us to chilean-born artist ricardo tobar is the notion of intersection, and although fusion is nothing new, as a concept it will always pull our heartstrings. applying influence is amateur, we see this over and over again as we endure trend-driven appropriation of cultures the world over, but the epiphany when an artist finds true synergy between heritage and influence is a pivotal moment that the inspired will seek, even though it may take the length of one’s career to behold. as pretentious as that may sound, it is precisely the hybrid born from that place of intersection that excites us at the esp institute, the a plus b that equals 3. we hear this in ricardos music the latin american instinct in his drums and percussion, sometimes tightly aligned with body movements and other times hauntingly mis-aligned and chaotic, intersects with his rock influence of ethereal (micro) melodies that slowly layer and layer until were climbing a glorious (macro) wall of sound but most importantly we hear where these different parts of his life come together to further create one unique voice. on both sides of his esp institute debut liturgia, tobar couples one pulsing dance-driven track with another atmospheric and immersive track, requiring we educate ourselves in the polarity of this language he’s building, one that will expand to tell a broader story later this year with his debut album. we welcome ricardo tobar, another forward-thinking artist, to the esp institute, and are proud to support any direction his compass points from here, as we believe hell never follow but will always lead.

infinite density – the new album by the berlin based, cuban-american artist blush response – is a fantastical exploration into the depths of industrial and ebm techno in collaboration with techno frontman adam x’s infamous imprint, sonic groove. influenced by the progressive noise of autechre, front line assembly and skinny puppy the producer has previously released with aufnahme +wiedergabe and ant-zen, as well as getting his hands dirty with programming work for the industrial pioneers fear factory, rhys fulber as well as latin pop singer cristian castro. infinite destiny takes a firm grip on situationally influenced content, pulling every corner of berlin into its belly for a challenging and unique sound – a sound that’s able to maintain functionality whilst simultaneously exposing loose wires of wild flangers and disturbed sampling. these erratic waves are expressed through the productions infinite density, aum shinrikyo, survivor guilt and dead still air, showcasing the most alien meta-bodies of blush’s sound. as an appropriation on contemporary acidic sound, the sonic motions of serpentine and tryptamine delve into explorations within the acid genre. rhys fulber’s string contribution on painkiller initiates a whirlwind rhetoric of distortion. panic stricken, no solace and tessellate focus on strong industrial pads that carry the density of each track whilst infinite dread’s ebm back bone hits hard with heavy arpeggiation. crucial to its form, the album showcases new experimental sound that repurposes algorithms of today’s dancefloor dogma. blush response exposes these paradigms through mutated build-ups and drops. however, his innovative “modular synth heavy” sound design obscures the flow in a way that permeates the concrete arenas his productions are designed for – in true berlin style.

we eroded pre-existent structures constructing an open heterotopic space, a horizontal and vertical thinking found its way through physical- and cyberspace, here, nothing manifested instantly - flippancy left space for any kind of interaction and appropriation. within (or well beyond) economic pressure points which diluted production, this was our opportunity to try out different potentials with no restrictions to the public, while simultaneously scrutinising the general framework of institutions and human behaviours. subversive potential always was variable, always asking, deconstructing and reconfiguring itself allowing new states of aggregation within diffuse interspaces and futures
