we are proud to announce our 6th release in the limited dance edition serie, this time with our very first 12- maxi single by anthony emrold phillip better known as -bro. valentino”. the side a, stay up zimbabwe is a legendary shango / orisha / calypso tune from 1979 that invaded the carnival season in trinidad and tobago, filling the lips and boots of everyone, singing and marching to its infectious chorus. bro. valentino again stunned the world with ah wo (band new revolution), a year later with a tune that championed the new mood of the islands and the new-found fame of the caribbean, no doubt spurned on by the very grenadian revolution, a year earlier. these refreshing caribbean calypso afro tunes, which have been constantly played during our dj sets, will come in a wonderful silk-screen printed cover and turquoise colored vinyl. limited to 1500 copies.

2019 repress - echoes of this summer’s ‘shango’ still shimmer through systems as detroit’s waajeed continues to make good on his promise: to “put paint where it ain’t.” after years of soul, funk and hip-hop explorations as a founding member of the platinum pied pipers (among many other innovative escapades) and, most recently, a soulful remix of amp fiddler on kenny dixon’s mahogany music, waajeed is building on the fresh line of house grooves he commenced this summer. his first pedigree dancefloor tracks in almost 20 years, he taps directly into the source and builds with his own soulful bricks. it’s working, too, dj-wise he’s playing alongside moodyman, mr. scruff and carl craig this fall, while ‘shango’ has enjoyed heavyweight support by the black madonna, carl craig, jackmaster, gilles peterson and many notable selectors.

band from trinidad & tobago, led by the internationally renowned lead guitarist guitarist and songwriter michael boothman. tabu and so dey say were recorded in 1972 and would remain family trees only recordings. limited edition of 500 copies worldwide! . family tree represented a new generation re-discovering trinidadian folk music forms and giving them a contemporary treatment. family tree infused old shango rhythms in their new sound and were the first to experiment with steel pan fused with standard instrumentation. tabu is a cover of a cuban standard made popular in trinidad by 1950s calypso musicians cyril diaz and his orchestra and so dey say was an original composition by david boothman. although they only ever recorded these two songs, the band toured with derek walcotts trinidad theatre workshop and forged long standing musical connections with some of the countrys leading musicians.

drums of passion was the first album released by babatunde olatunji (1927-2003) in 1960. olatunji was a drummer, social activist and musician, born in ajindo, nigeria. in this album he has recaptured some of his early impressions in his drum beats and giving them new zest. the african drum rhythms are not only musical melodies and songs but also ways of communication. for instance, the first track -akiwowo- was the name of a train conductor who shouted his humorous cry against the fading rhythm of the freight train. -baba jinde- is a dance play and the title track -gin-go-lo-ba- was sampled by many contemporary artists (santana and fatboy slim amongst others) and covered in 1979 by latin jazz/percussionist candido for his disco chart smash -jingo-. drums of passion is mainly a danceable album and often cited as one of the first african albums recorded in (then called) stereophonic sound in the united states in 1960. pressing on 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

beat street is an american 1984 drama film featuring new york city hip hop culture of the early 1980s, breakdancing, djing and graffiti.
there are several performances in the movie, notably from established early hip hop groups, grandmaster melle mel & the furious five, doug e. fresh, afrika bambaataa & soulsonic force and the treacherous three. as a member of the treacherous three, kool moe dee also appeared in the film.
beat street’s impact was felt internationally as well as throughout the united states. in germany, for example, beat street is credited with introducing the hip hop movement to the country.
