so gerd and philipp were due to play xoyo one saturday night and the club is 6 minutes from my studio so i suggested we go there first to make tunes for a few hours. we made 2 songs that night and one of them is ‘reach out’. gerd did the drums on my 808, philipp wrote the beautiful lead part on my obxa and i did the bass in my cs80. i added the words a couple of weeks later, they are inspired by leonard cohen’s letter to his muse marianne ihlen on her deathbed. (joe goddard) including fantastic remixes by erol alkan and osborne.
alkan explores the fringes of club melancholy on remixes first for old friends hot chip, whose boy from school builds and builds to dancefloor catharsis, while mockasins forever dolphin love maintains the whimsical qualities of the original, even when shot through with an irresistible bassline.
pop remixes in two different shades from alkan, first of all reworking the scissor sisters once-inescapable i dont feel like dancing into something unrecognizably spectral and shimmering, while metronomys classic the bay receives a deft edit that instead just tips it slightly towards the dancefloor.
musics favourite robotic pair receive an uncompromising, post-rave rework from the london dj, signalling their already fearsome the brainwasher in weirder directions still. on the flip, legendary pianist and entertainer gonzales finds his tinkling/rapping combo never stop transformed into a very analogue, jackin club tool built around his tongue-in-cheek spoken verse.
franz ferdinands second-lp single do you want to? receives an almost comically overblown, seemingly endless intro from alkan, before dissolving into cosmic electro ecstasy. meanwhile, the yeah yeah yeahs receive an unexpected and somewhat gnarly chicago inspired renovation that kicks like a mule
black crow is the third single to be taken from the album ‘the soft bounce’. part american gothic, part future movie soundtrack, it’s a song of haunting beauty. holly miranda s vocal glides across reflective strings and delicate crystalline snippets of sound, resulting in an epic torch song lament. it’s backed with white crow, erol alkan s mighty extended reworking of the song, placing it in spacious widescreen, where you can hear for miles.
sub concious was originally conceived as the exclusive track for erol alkans fabriclive 77 mix, which was released to major critical acclaim back in august. a highlight track within the mix, sub conscious has now been remixed by tin man and new phantasy signing kamera.
erol alkan delivers two reworks of the manic street preachers track >europa geht durch mich<. while mesmerise eins takes the track on a peak-time acid trip, the warped out mesmerise zwei comes ready for the blurred moments just before sunrise. both mixes feature the voice of german actress nina hoss. europa geht durch mich was originally recorded in berlins legendary hansa studios. it is taken from manic street preachers forthcoming 12th album futurology.exclusively on vinyl via phantasy, limited to just 300 copies.
andy meecham is a man of many musical incarnations and has been since the early 90s. following on from projects like the now dormant bizarre inc and revived dub-disco duo chicken lips, it is as the emperor machine that he explores his most experimental sounds. to date there have been three full length albums on dc recordings after the project was initially started with the idea of creating music using just one synth, the roland sh-3a. the results lay out the staffordshire mans love of vintage synthesisers for all to see, and combine tough edged disco beats with more cerebral cosmic melodies into alluring soundscapes that bend your mind and drive your feet. as well as a slew of 12s and lps, the emperor machine has also turned his hand to remixes of giants like moby, daft punk and royksopp, and has previously taken a live and inspiringly psychedelic incarnation of the project to clubs and festivals across the planet.

at the end of 2006, erol alkan was at a crossroads. he’d been voted dj of the year by mixmag. he’dmade landmark, expectation-defying remixes for bands he loved: a crunching “glam racket” reworking of ‘do you want to’ for franz ferdinand, a wonderfully wistful reinterpretation of hop chip’s ‘boy from school’, a psychedelic take on scissor sisters’ ‘i don’t feel like dancing’ and a genre-defining reworking of justice’s ‘waters of nazereth’.
