family, fish, shapes. these are only three of the many topics that stefan streck aka the micronaut recently devoted himself to within his releases on labels such as acker records or analogsoul. always with a clear line, but never intellectualising, is how the multi-instrumentalist and producer pursues his scientific curiosity in terms of sounds. his tracks are elaborate and yet danceable. sometimes they are composed minimally, sometimes they are utterly playful. within just a few bars, subtle sequences transform to energetic roller coaster rides since the micronaut loves having a game with contrasts. his newest ep on freude am tanzen proves this anew.

10 years after blu and exile released their magnum opus below the heavens, the california duo have reunited to release 14 tracks from the original 2007 sessions. in the beginning: before the heavens contains previously heard songs and unreleased gems – the best of the best chosen from over 40 songs in the vault. their third collaboration follows 2012s give me my flowers while i can still smell them, and is slated for an october release. in the beginning: before the heavens is made of up songs that are raw and untouched, keeping the authenticity of blu and exile’s creativity at the time. the album has guest appearances from familiar names like dr. oop, donel smokes, aloe blacc, and blame one. while soul provider, another day, and party of two appeared on blus lifted ep, the majority of these songs showcase blu rapping at his peak, maintaining his underground attitude as he dishes on reaching star status (constellations), getting radio play (on the radio), or opposing views in a problem-ridden world (youre gonna die someday). exile, meanwhile, builds a golden hip-hop era feel with head-nodding samples and dj scratches.

after seemingly coming out of nowhere, your old droog set the internet aflame in 2014 with his self-titled debut ep, catching the attention of bloggers all over the web from new york magazine’s vulture to nahright. before long, conspiracy theories started and people began to posit that droog was another older, legendary new york rapper in disguise. profiled in the new yorker, droog (meaning “friend” in russian) set the record straight about who he was: a twenty-something ukrainian immigrant who fell in love with hip-hop when he arrived in south brooklyn as a small child. the timbre of his voice resembled that of a hip-hop legend but droog’s content had more to it than street dreams or observations from a project window. his music reflected his own unique life experience as he referenced everything from sports, to crime, to seinfeld and c-span in his rhymes. he was an intelligent hoodlum with a stand-up comedian’s sense of humor—unafraid to be as self-deprecating as he was self-aggrandizing.

im rahmen des 25ten label-jubiläums veröffentlicht fat possum erstmals das album just do me right von asie payton als lp. asie payton stammt aus holly ridge, mississippi, lebte und arbeitete dort sein leben lang als farmer. dieses album enthält die einzigen studio aufnahmen, die während seiner lebenszeit entstanden. asie payton verstarb 1997. das werk erschien erstmals posthum im jahr 2006. asie payton ist hier als hochtalentierter blues-musiker zu hören, dessen stimme oft auch die kraft des soul mit einschließt. wenig ist über das leben von asie payton dokumentiert, jedoch ist er teil der berühmten film-dokumentation you see me laughin the last of the hill country bluesmen (2003). die vinyl-lp erscheint inklusive downloadcode.

zum 25-jährigen jubiläum des labels fat possum werden ausgesuchte titel aus dem back-catalogue auf lp wiederveröffentlicht. in diese serie fällt auch stop arguing over me von paul wine jones. paul wine jones steht laut amerikanischen musik-kritikern für einen rohen, ursprünglichen aber elektrifizierten delta blues. 1946 geboren, veröffentlichte paul wine jones mit dem album mule erst 1995 sein debüt. stop arguing over me war sein drittes und letztes album für fat possum. paul wine jones verstarb 2005. der sänger und gitarrist überzeugte auf diesem album als einer der großen zeitgenössischen talente des mississippi-blues. die vinyl-lp erscheint inklusive downloadcode.
