the music contained in this album invokes the vibes and spirit that were so crucial to much of the music recorded during the 1960s & 70s in jamaica. if you talk to the musicians and singers of this era, they will tell you that the driving force behind the songs they created was the sheer love of music. this is one of the reasons these recordings are so powerful and move listeners to this day. music like this can only be made by those who were schooled in the studios and yards around kingston and is not something that can be easily reproduced outside jamaica. the kingston all stars represent some of the most legendary musicians to ever grace the little island & it is thanks to their passion and dedication that we have a lifetime of music to enjoy.

nathan davis has been an internationally significant figure in jazz throughout the latter half of the 20th century, but to many his musical legacy remains little known. this album presents the music of nathan davis as it developed through the 60s and 70s, from bop through modal to world sounds and funk. having turned his back on the us he spent the 60s living in europe, playing and recording with jazz luminaries such as kenny clarke, art blakey and eric dolphy, before returning at the end of the decade to take up a career in teaching in pittsburgh.

josh groban glaenzt auf seinem gleichnamigen album mit einer wirklich ausgereiften stimme. neben der lyrischen bearbeitungen von morricones klassiker -cinema paradiso- und den neu-interpretationen von don mcleans -starry, starry night- und albert hammonds -alejate- finden sich auch meisterhaft gekonnte dramatische darbietungen der neapolitanischen lieder -alla luca del sole- und -canto alla vita- (letzteres zusammen mit den corrs). viele der hier von groban dargebotenen lieder, einschlie§lich einer bearbeitung von bachs -jesu, joy of man s desiring- (-jesu, meine freude- mit lili haydn) im stil einer progressiven rock-oper, kommen einem pompoeser und gewagter vor als ihre so geschaetzten musikalischen vorbilder. ein deutlicher hinweis dafuer, dass die gro§e opernbuehne nicht mehr weit entfernt sein kann. und das waeren wirklich nicht die schlechtesten aussichten.
