a true lynchpin of the detroit underground. sharif laffrey has been producing music & djing internationally for over 20 years. sharifs participation in detroits early rave scene during the early 1990s led him to music, djing & organizing underground loft parties. sharif became part of detroits submerge squad as he worked & lived in its storied 2030 grand river avenue headquarters working for mike banks as an operative for underground resistance & submerge. and dance is the debut release on laffreys own record label special forces. a workout of a jam that along its 14 minute long route undergoes transformations. cryptic spoken vocals and sound for dance.

collector is the solo project of jason campbell who resides in newcastle, australia. forced extraction is his first release for beat concern following an lp on the melbourne-based drawing heat, and tapes for seminal labels, night people and clan destine records. campbell has honed his unique take on experimental techno over the last few years by building compositions with all analogue hardware and modular synthesis. forced extraction sees collector at his most incisive, carving out four pummelling tracks across the 12inch. piercing feedback, foreboding synth movements and bass drones are anchored by rigid drum programming with an attention to heavy industrial rhythms. an exciting peek into the coal-face of underground australian electronics

originally hailing from melbourne australia, the now berlin based live electronic act forces release their latest mlp- newbody on the label incarnation of the berlin based fleisch collective. the 6 track mlp maps their relationship over the last few years with four new tracks and two remixes. ranging from taught, neurotic pop and ebm to bristling ambient landscapes, newbody burns with a kind of pre-dawn energy that is both euphoric and paranoid. newbody depicts the final moment in the boomerang arc of technology as it returns to completely re-enter the body, perfectly capturing the focused urgency and post-electronic physicality of forces live.

mm audio adds to its catalogue the third release signed by the japanese artist hironori takahashi. the ep consists of four tracks with kick very present, deep and hypnotic sounds, atmospheres and repetitive rhythms representing his techno.

ensuring they keep things pushing forwards while also celebrating their past, vibraphone call upon rising talent gemil to deliver an ep that is purely fresh material. -forces & gravity- is perfectly honed to get the maximum response from the dance with its muscular production and catchy vocal sample, but if you want an even more focused affair the remix strips things down to the bare necessities and works just as effectively. on the b side -horizon- gets a touch more playful in its synth work with interplaying riffs creating a dazzling whole, and then -solar storm- brings the heads-down, hard-swinging heaviness into the mix in a devastating finishing blow.

the jungle brothers’ 1988 debut, straight out the jungle, was important for many reasons. it was sloppy and goofy but had moments of real focus and social consciousness. it was a true “kitchen sink” record, that caught a rap fanbase enraptured by eric b. & rakim, public enemy and boogie down productions a bit off-guard. also of note, beyond the excellence of the album itself, the jungle brothers were the fulcrum for what would become the native tongues movement – they came first, de la soul and a tribe called quest followed, under their guidance.

first out of the traps is a double sided limited edition 45 containing two previously unreleased hutson gems. the a-side is a previously unreleased 1977 recording, which is making its debut on this single. it is coupled with the unreleased full length instrumental of ‘all because of you’.

this eleven minute stormer is given a twisted treatment by nick payne with his remix that brings forth a tidal wave of sub bass headiness best suited for the late night hours.

damien lynch enjoys countryside a drive in the twilight hour. this is his second offering for the esp institute. on side a, brunette opens with a straight-ahead techno thump of hi-hats and a pulsating 16th-note bassline—a subtle playing field composed solely with a rare 1970’s italian machine, the godwin drummaker 32, unearthed from the secret back room of a music shop in rural ireland where it hid among wonderful vintage russian synths and oddball electronics. this elegant track drips with warm and phasing pads, gentle staccato keys and beautifully simple arpeggios that blur every now and then—all affirming damien’s less-is-more ideology. with side b’s forced relax, damien continues to exercise his restraint, arranging his instruments in a band-like fashion, affording each player the sonic space to project their individual qualities whilst supporting an overall dialogue. there is a soft ebb and flow to every machine’s role, whether the swelling of bass or the interplay of percussive keys, but when these characters arrive in one place, the result is a tranquil euphoria. these two songs will accept you for who you truly are.
