darkside is the collaborative duo of guitarist/composer dave harrington and electronic producer nicolas jaar. darkside summon a hybrid of electronic music, psychedelic rock, and dancefloor techno with the sort of artistic depth and breadth for which the term progressive was coined. darksides first fulllength album-released on nicos own other people label in conjunction with matador records-is called psychic. darksides psychic is a watershed moment for the duo, a quantum leap forward from their 3-song debut, 2011s darkside ep. at any given moment, psychic encompasses the ritualistic structures and methodologies of krautrock, the cosmic exploration of classic space-rock, and the immersive, body-moving transcendence of 21st century house and techno-but, working with the finishingeach- others�-sentences fluidity of kindred spirits, dave and nico synthesize it all into a living, breathing whole.

gnawa is a uniquely moroccan sound with roots in islam and links to a healing ritual called lila (arabic for night). from this heritage comes innov gnawa, the only new york-based gnawa group made from moroccan natives, led by the mâalem (master) hassan ben jaafer. in 2016, pique-nique recordings presented their debut ep together and, since then, the band have also featured on bambro koyo ganda from bonobo s latest album. aicha is their much anticipated follow-up. alongside the joyous call and response between the maalem and the group that s common in gnawa, there are also hints of electronic programming interspersed between the traditional live instrumentation no doubt an influence of nicolas jaar collaborator dave harrington who produced the ep.

on �rest in space�, his first full length outing for music for dreams, the lp keeps a steady pace of around 90-95 bpm, but never gets repetitive with islandman taking us on a rich and ever surprising journey, full of quirky turns and mysterious instrumentations. the opener �rest in space� treats us to a funky percussion-thick rhythm that lounges into a pool of playful & jazzy horn & flute arrangements. this is followed by the epic �night wind� which sweeps across cinematic desert landscapes of synth layers and falls into a dark night time groove reminiscent of nicolas jaar & dave harrington�s darkside project. �seikleos� centers around a motorik electronic rhythm pattern (not unlike the classic electro-pop classic �popcorn�) that develops into a chugging balearic house jam while stand out track �future days� brings in a female guest vocalist to complete the album with a breezy full on groover that echoes of both sheila chandra and tom tom club. also included is the previously released digital single �agit� as well as a remix by berlin-based m.rux, toning down the heavy guitar of the original in favor of a more bouncier interpretation. the stunning �ikaru� wades in through chunks of jungle ambiance and watery percussion to lounge along on a rubbery funk bassline, coupled with a heavy laid back beat and wobbly derelict synth figures. �tawhid� is an odd mix of new wave brilliance and prog momentum that breaks into a cascade of pouring rain and surprising percussion breaks. lastly comes gorgeous eastern guitar opus �the true word of the wind� and the warm vibey dreamscape �following�. as a whole, islandman delivers a delicate buffet of influences - spanning the spectrum from hazy balearic pop to tropical new age flirts to deep spiritual psychedelic jamming.

limited edition vinyl features white scratch-off ink and a 25 cent piece cased in a plastic outer sleeve. each copy will be unique, as the quarter will move around the plastic sleeve in transit creating its own pattern. this is intentional, so any scratches that appear on the front cover when the vinyl arrives is a result of this. sirens is the highly anticipated second full-length lp from nicholas jaar, the chilean-born electronic music producer, mixing engineer and dj, which comes out on october 14, 2016 via other people/kobalt. a prolific artist with a wide palette of talents, jaar spent his teenage years in dance music circles in new york city, where he now resides. in 2011, he released his debut album, the critically-acclaimed space is only noise. in 2012, he was contributed to bbc radio 1�s prestigious �essential mix� series, winning �essential mix of the year�. in 2013, matador released the debut album from darkside, jaar�s project with his friend dave harrington. the band toured the record with a giant, rotating circular mirror, with key performances at primavera sound and coachella. other notable projects by jaar include from scratch, a live concept first developed for moma ps1, pomegranates, an ambient record and alternate soundtrack to the armenian film the colour of pomegranates, and the original soundtrack for dheepan, a thriller by the french filmmaker jacque audiard about a family of sri lankan refugees living in the suburbs of paris. dheepan won the palme d�or at cannes in 2015. jaar is the founder of the new york based imprint other people, releasing music and spoken word by a diverse group of artists ranging from lydia lunch to ezekiel honig

the prism is an aluminum cube, small enough to fit in your palm. it was designed by nicolas jaar as a new medium for releasing music. the first release - csa001 - features twelve (mostly) unreleased songs from jaar and other clown & sunset collaborators. the prism is a piece of art in and of itself, its contents beg to be shared. twin headphone outlets encourage connections to the object and between the two listeners. the prism tries to restore physicality to the listening experience. the medium and the method are as important as the music itself. the prism makes you consider how the music is being heard, the way the object feels in your hands, and its potential to foster intimacy between listeners. when the prism is unplugged, a beam of light passes through the empty center, revealing a void. someone is missing.
