love and money front man james grant has collaborated with producer gordy goudie to form the korvids, releasing a dance album. for the older generation who might want to bust a move once more in honour of their younger selves. james says, i wanted to be someone else for a while. sound different. write different. it can be dreary being me all the time..i sing most of my vocals on the record in falsetto, which, as we know, is the international language of disco. the korvids marry their love of disco and 70 s funk with influences such as deodato, massive attack, miles and anything else that takes their fancy. after the success of their debut release beach coma, which was picked up by sirius us radio and remixed by balaeric legend jose padilla, the duo released bad faith, a beauteous cut of late 70 s disco remixed by love & money and steely dan s producer gary katz. james was the front man for love and money, everyone s favourite band from the 1980 s who should have been massive but somehow werent. the other half of the korvids, gordy goudie, is also no stranger to the business having produced simple minds and playing bass and guitar for the primevals and echo and the bunnymen.

das nächtliche gemunkel am tresen bei bier und klaren war irritierend gewesen: aufs neue album, so drummer zimmermann und basser strohmeier, würde das lo fat orchestra auch kinderchöre und ein streichquartett packen. man dachte mit grauen an «the wall», konzeptalben-bombast, artrockkacke und hoffte halb, das sei nur der berüchtigte schwarzwälder humor. jetzt ist «the second word is love» da. nicht mit kinder- aber mit chören und natürlich mit streichquartett. die befürchtungen zerbröseln im nu, wenn im opener «be honest» die bassdrum nagelt, die elektrizität in der luft rauscht und singt, bevor der sägezahnbass und schmids gesang und orgel einsetzen. alles gut! alles besser! alles: mehr!

in keb darges own words: i ve done many a compilation in my day, mostly based around the tunes i played at my long running deep funk nights in madame jo jos. that night is no longer on the go, possibly due to a growing lack of interest on my part, (sorry). in the last few years the lost & found: nights at the club have been my real passion, and indeed little ediths and andy smiths passion too. what a marvelous era this is for good music. we may still have pure stuff like dub step: pulling in large numbers of sheep, but an equal number of youngsters are being attracted to retro, or at least retro sounding music. people tell me it is because the youth are fed up with computerized music, or men with drug problems angrily shouting at them over a dull repetitive beat, but i know lots of teenagers who have bypassed this muck all together. must be the internet that is helping kill off the demand for empty music. you no longer need to go to a retro club night, or indeed search out rare records to be exposed to good music, the internet is full of the stuff. my fifteen year old daughter is a marc bolan fan who while researching the poor fellows influences discovered chuck berry, sun records, etc, etc. i dont really know or understand why so many are at last getting into the good stuff, but they are, and it is wonderful for the likes of me.
tripper, the fifth fruit bats full-length, was recorded at wacs studio in los angeles with thom monahan. for the first week of recording, fruit bats leader eric d. johnson brought in a full band to capture some of the live excitement of 2009s the ruminant band. however, having recently worked alone on soundtracks for an extended period, johnson knew that he wanted tripper to be more of a solitary pursuit than his previous album. the resulting album, a bittersweet meditation on hitting the road, leaving the familiar behind and reinventing yourself, is a reinvention itself.
before he made his breakthrough with 69 love songs, stephin merritt was a little-known songwriter signed to merge records. the label reaches into its own archives for this rarities compilation, which features 14 songs recorded between 1994 and 1999. full description1999. some of the tracks were originally released as 7 inch vinyl singles by the magnetic fields, others are unreleased rarities, including three cuts from merritts unfinished science fiction musical and one outtake from the 69 love songs sessions.
