after previous remixes for sideshow and mymy on aus music in 2009, bristol-based kieren lomax (aka komon) will return to will sauls respected imprint this july with, walk the walk. with his debut lp, released last year on apple pips, komon asserted himself as a producer capable of shapeshifting through a variety of soundscapes.

kicking off a big year for apple pips with something tasty and different from komon & appleblim! having worked together on remixes for respected labels like ninja tune & aus, appleblim & komonazmuk (now going under the name komon for his house/bass productions) started jamming in the studio on some original material. messing with boundaries and having fun was the order of the day, and what we have here are two of the first results… ’gas jam’ is a bassline-led roller with a nod to both classic uk garage & the futuristic house & techno vibes of uk bass music. getting dropped on rinse fm on both the marcus nasty & hypercolour shows, & with eats everything & carl craig supporting it already you can hear why it appeals to open minded and diverse djs.. ’silencio’ shimmers and shines on a glooped-out balearic/kosmiche beat, an 80s soul soundsystem bassline funks on through and leads you into a woozy blissed out climax…slo-mo house/bass balearic bizniss… with more collabs with appleblim to follow this year, his new productions getting props from all angles, & releases lined up on hypercolour, komon’s year is shaping up nicely!

ever-versatile, komonazmuk has seen varied releases on labels including combat recordings and apple pips, as well as a number of legendary remixes alongside appleblim, including brian eno and bonobo. his hotly anticipated album is due out on h.e.n.c.h in 2011. arkist is a fresh face with a fresh sound straight out of bristols creative melting-pot. newly released from beneath the mentoring wings of komonazmuk and appleblim, his slick productions have already been slated for release on decarhythm, apple pips and subdepth records.

komonazmuk drops a tough slice of deep, stepping, and melodic dubstep for our 11th release… with his history in rave culture stretching back to the oldskool days, through releases on hardleaders & moving shadow with ice minus, right up to his current cutting edge productions, keiran lomax aka komonazmuk has got his fingers in many musical pies. having had big releases on scene-leaders like tempa, and his debut album coming on h.e.n.c.h. later this year, his versatility as a producer and engineer is second to none.

komonazmuk follows up the immense bad apple on hench003 with another pair of sickening bristol beats. throwing in a heap of minimal techno influences but with a more traditional dubstep backing. miss her is a beauty and the beast affair with smooth melodies and subtle elements which soon make way for a disgusting mechanical drop into disgusting bassline territory. on the flip night at deluxe throws cheeky cut up chords into the mix alongside a super low selection of long bass notes that churn your stomach as they warm your chest. thinking mans dubstep.

this time around jakes gives the floor to one of the hottest producers on the circuit: komonazmuk. bad apple displays perfectly what is so exciting about the dubstep movement right now, combining elements that wouldnt be out of place in a minimal techno track, adding subtle flourishes that will strike a chord with henchs growing army of fans. last mistake goes for a more straight up dubstep feel with skipping beats and echoed atmospherics that build a cinematic edge to another beautifully minimal track. komonazmuk is clearly a dangerous man.

inside out is a brand new series that invites djs and producers to blur the boundaries between traditional artist albums and mix compilations. coming from aus music label head and dj-kicks curator will saul, the concept encourages artists to showcase their own music and or the music of those in their own individual circles. the mix will be release digitally and on cd, while a selection of the tracks will also be available on double gatefold vinyl. each instalment will feature 100% new and unreleased music. it is a chance for artists to take sole creative charge, a&r as they see fit and then commission brand new music specifically for the cause. depending on who is at the helm, inside out will take different forms: producers may wish to represent their own sound with only music they have made themselves or with close collaborators, while djs and label heads may wish to reflect the sounds and scenes that surround them. the results will be a window into an artists world that works as a coherent mix, but also as a treasure trove of fresh new music that steps outside the usual lines of a dance album. the idea stems from will sauls own approach in the club, which often finds him seeking out brand new and unheard music to play for the first time. that feeling of taking people into the unknown is one that reminds him of the energy and excitement of his early days as a dancer.
