having cruised around labels such as la luna, tusk wax and most tellingly back to the balearics, maricopa has already left a trail of smooth-sailing breadcrumbs behind him, and now he drops anchor in a harbour which may yet prove to be his spiritual home. is it balearic? is a question that hardly needs to be asked when you re drifting out to sea on the blissful tones of benthos or reveling in the expressive ripples of deer, but it s safe to say these jams would go down smooth with a mediterranean sunset and an aperol spritz.

bakalas ep vol.01 aims to make known new talents from hypnotica colectiva’s circle. artists whose music captivated us because of their ability to reflect the influence of this new aggressive face of techno that recently came into the scene, and where we find traces from genres such as hardcore or styles within techno itself such as industrial or birmingham.

baricentro is an italian funk-rock band founded in 1976 by two brothers francesco and vanni boccuzzi, after the release of two albums in mid seventies (sconcerto and trusciant) for the major record company emi they recorded in 1983 the single tittle tattle representing a clear innovation in sound from their past, without believing that would receive a positive response in the new york city underground music scene and soon becoming a paradise garage and loft classic. best record italy today came out with this special reissue-project as a limited edition ep, remastered from the original master tapes and containing for the first time all the versions from 1983 and 84 including the unreleased dub that was previously available as an acetate cut only for deejay play.

with summer just round the corner, hell yeah come up with some essential—and fully, officially licensed—new cuts from balearic gabba sound system edit master enzo elia. he touches up some historic italo house with his usual masterful touch and will have you yearning for boat party season before the tracks have even finished playing. if you loved the italian s take on soft house company what you need, you should go crazy for this new offering. up first is italo-piano-house classic morenas s hazme sonar, which is eight minutes of diva vocal athletics, big synths and pumping retro drums that will make you punch the air. fun and fulsome, it is a sure fire classic house winner this summer. jazzy doll s ladybird is next and in enzo s hands becomes a rubbery, ducking and diving house cut with big hand claps, bubbling bass and loose limbed percussion that is ripe for raves on the sea.

finally the dudes behind the fantastic hell yeah recordings step out into the limelight on their own with their debut ep of on golf channel. and what a debut! tracks range from blissful, boogie influenced house music (adriatic bolt) to the 1992 style primal scream psychedelic chugging banger (quando) via sunny acid (quiet force) and deep emotional vocal led ambience (i don t care who you are). just as you d expect from the amazing sounds their label has put out over the years, this ep is uncategoriseable in the best possible way we look forward to hearing more from the aptly titled balearic gabba sound system, this is just an aperitivo, or is it a selection of antipasti. either way, it leaves you ready for the next course. golf channel every time!

maricopa returns to back to the balearics to complete his stunning opus, pastel love. and he continues where he left off building deeply textured songs packed full of simple melodies that really shine. his music opts for subtle feelings and passing vibes over the more obvious structures of dance music. the release of part one led to a number of comparisons with the early work of aphex twin as well as more contemporary producers such as four tet. such comparisons dont come lightly, but pastel love demonstrates that a rare musical talent has arrived. the release again has beautiful printed covers and looks as good as it sounds. viva maricopa!

if you were to ask freedarich to state the artistic area he prefers working in, his shotgun answer would most probably be music with all its influences. what amuses and enthuses me most, is the subtly absurd introduction of different styles freedarich says about himself. generally, his main passion seems to lie in the unearthing of the concealed and unknown, and making these accessible to the listener.

mikael stavöstrand (lick my deck, clink, highgrade) spent a few days in berlin recently, so why not get him over to the we are hq and work on some tracks with agaric, right? the boys first track is a deeper bass driven techno track interchanging grooves and eerie strings and percussion arrangements whereas the flipside on this limited 10 inch goes more funky and presents a surprising vocal bit where vealchop out of los angeles asks himself why certain things went the way they did! already tried and tested to excited crowds in clubs like 1001 london, rex paris and tresor berlin...

these two tracks have proved to work wonders on dancefloors across the planet, support from all the usual players and a massive follow up to the previous two >club tracks< releases in the series, which have received plays and praise by djs from all various styles such as laurent garnier, d julz, heartthrob, luke slater and dj hell to name a few. a-side track >nobody home< grows into a huge build using an oldschool moog-bassline, whilst the b-side chops up and pitches around an edited voicerecording over straight forward beat, resulting in a very unusual, groovy and hypnotic jam for the late hours.
