wah wah 45s will release orange whip, the new album by their latest signing, honeyfeet. the outfit, who have received praise from the likes of the guardian, have also set festivals alight up and down the country with their unique melange of sounds. for the last couple of years the honeyfeet (who name from a line in the blues brothers film) have been a conduit for the ideas and expressions of an exotic mixture of manchester based musicians. this genre-defying band incorporate styles including jazz, folk and hip hop into their music. someone once called it folk-hop and barrelhouse-pop, and that’s just vague enough to make sense.

this double lp set is ensconced in a thick tip-on gatefold jacket splashed with a colorful spread of vivid archival imagery accumulated over a decade of research into the columbus, ohio culture. the liner notes serve as an in-depth history of columbus soul music, linking the capsoul label with the prix label and norman whiteside s wee project (recently sampled by kanye west).

long beach serial chiller ahwlee is a beat vet who delivers smooth buttery samples with a nostalgic vibe. 1991 is a cult classic cassette now issued for the first time on vinyl. these tracks are dusty, mellow and easy-going. don’t mistake mellow for boring, however, because ahwlee’s production is nuanced and intricate underneath the minimalist overtones. there’s jazzed-up rhodes all over the place, and the percussion work masterfully includes a ton of negative space in between perfectly chopped breaks. they’ll get your head nodding.

after debuting their label with the return of headhunter, the trusik team returns with their second vinyl release from the ever-illusive ruffcut faculty member tremble. tremble has quietly made his presence known with reggae influenced tunes that are simultaneously roughly hewn, yet meticulous detailed in sound design. for trsk002, tremble gives us “too much terror”, which with all the daily attacks on civilians across the nations of the world, seems prescient. what starts out as sound system inspired roller slowly morphs into a technoid fusion of dread sub weight and dub techno chord flourishes. on the flipside, tremble simmers the tempo down to the 130ish range with “bwoy”. dancehall indebted sub detonations output cut vicious shapes while filtered rasta portents gradually build into a technoid climax. two killer sides for the concerning djs! for trsk002, trusik has incorporated artist ben ladieu’s immaculate pen and ink drawing into the overall aesthetic of the release. ladieu’s work is often dense, multi-layered and full of little hidden details that draw comparisons to 80’s diy punk flyers and zeke clough’s contributions to seminal dubstep label skull disco and woe to the septic heart.

songs from the source is a lost and found 1973 recording of the source family. these twelve songs were recorded live in the hollywood hills as a rehearsal for a concert date that spirit of 76 - aka yahowah 13, the savage sons of yahowa, yodship, and firewaterair, now known as children of the sixth root race - had at the whisky. a 1/4 tape copy of the recording was found in chicago in 2006, though no one is really sure how it got there. djin aquarian, rhythm guitarist and songwriter for spirit of 76, recalls being sent on a mission to chicago later in 1973, where he believes he left the tape with an old friend. djin wrote most of the songs in the year before he joined with the source, as part of his solo mystical quest to help enlighten the world before it might annihilate itself, adding, im glad both the album and the world are still here.though this rehearsal wasnt meant to be released at the time, there are probably no other recordings as complete of the band doing these songs. the spirit of 76 had a different sound than the one yahowah 13 made with yahowa. songs from the source has more r n b grooved energy, with splashes of synth and organ, a female vocal chorus and streamlined fusion rhythms backing the uniquely yahowan lyrical populism of songs like godmen and lost dead but hoping. songs from the source is a miraculous missing piece of the sources positive musical movement. the members of yahowah 13 (djin, sunflower on bass, octavius on drums) were joined by family members ahom, aquariana, cinderella, rhythm, vibration, and zoroaster on lead guitar, to create the ecstatic sound of spirit of 76.
