the reflective and immersive extraterrestrial synth explorations of surgeons girl s a violet sleep ep mark a stunning, dream-like debut for the bristol based artist to close a tumultuous year. specialising in live audio-visual performance, combined with a love of analogue synths, surgeons girl weaves emotive and enveloping sounds from her instruments, drawing on influences from the likes of suzanne ciani, laurel halo and kaitlyn aurelia smith. livity sound is a label set up by peverelist in 2011 as a vehicle for a raw and exploratory strain of uk techno, rooted in the heritage of uk dance music and sound system culture. it has since become one of the uk s foremost protagonists for cutting edge underground electronic music.

aos’ boundless love for music is apparent in everything she does. as a producer, a dj, and an event organizer with seattle’s secondnature and tuf collectives, kayla waldorf’s vision eschews traditional categories and genre boxes in favor of an ecstatic spontaneity. her dj sets are well known for their playful energy and narrative threading between many different styles. violent light is aos’ first offering on secondnature’s own label, and it captures this playful essence. the title track’s stomping groove (complete with rave whistle) sets the tone, while lullaby and what/why move into headier territory composed of dusty synths stabs and clouds of vocal effects. finally, secondnature’s own fugal delivers a remix that flips what/why into a rolling depth charge.

straight out of underground paris and right onto pinkman s broken dreams arrives myn. the public systems label boss follows up a debut track on his own label with a poem about gloom, desolation and anger written in native machine language for the rotterdam imprint. the a stanza describes a mental outburst with punchy lines written in raw percussion and disconcerting 303 work. following a line break, the b stanza changes the meter from 4/4 to pummelling broken beat in a piece about power and dominance titled black rose . the violent poetry concludes with yet more deathly rhythms and spine-chilling verses in core collapse .
