after kicking off the year with releases by wheelman and general ludd, were very pleased to announce that naum gabo completes our recent trilogy of releases from glasgow based artists. alongside ivan smagghe, its no secret that optimo have been a huge influence around these parts and having released ivans smagghe & cross project on belters last year, its a huge honour to work with naum gabo - the production partnership of jonnie wilkes (jg wikes of optimo) and james savage (mastering engineer for optimo music). fittingly enough, naum gabo played live at the first ever optimo related parties we attended at the sub club back in 2005 and jonnies influential and supportive presence has been felt over the years as we started to become more involved in the glasgow scene and as the label developed. so it didnt require much thought to do this release before we had even heard these new naum gabo tracks they are absolute slammers of the highest order! really big release, bringing to our minds the likes of errorsmith. belters is a new club-focussed label brought to you by huntleys + palmers.

nice price deal !!! the title of this ep sorta says it all. its quite an important release for the label. glasgow musical connections all around! when most people think of optimo music, they think of the long-running club night in glasgow >optimo (espacio)<, which ran for 12 years every sunday…headed by jd twitch and jg wilkes. label honcho jd twitch is extremely proud to be releasing naum gabo … as this is the studio project of his optimo partner, jonnie wilkes, along with james savage. jonnie and james (formally releasing three 12 inches simply as >naum< on kompakts mighty speicher series) have been active on the scene for a while now. as well as releasing the original music on kompakt, mule, eskimo, dissident, and tinae they have provided some wonderful naum gabo reworks for hot chip, simian mobile disco, franz ferdinand, snow patrol, psychonauts and so many more… twitch has long been a fan of naum gabo so it is a bit of a coup to be getting this fantastic release: two covers of two mighty scottish acts from the late 70s/early 80s.

fright returns after a long absence in which we sought refuge in hades during the hail storm of gothic hysteria that passed over earths minions. some may remember us from the breakthrough debut release from gatekeeper or the unholy italo-techno alliance we shared with antoni maiovvi. now finally, we return, this halloween, with our most ominous mission yet. naum gabo aka glasgows jonnie wilkes (1/2 of optimo) and james savage started their illustrious career with a trio of releases as naum for kompakts speicher series then have most recently gone on to release music on dissident, thisisnotanexit, endless flight, world unknown and most recently optimo music. created and recorded between 2010 and 2011 in their hottrax studio, naum gabo have come up with > the crystal line<, > galena< and > dmitris darkness<. specifically delivered in mind for fright, they keep true to the labels mission of releasing music for unseen films with 3 mid-tempo and certainly melancholic gems that also maintain an unmistakable ng groove for the stranger dancefloors we know and love. an absolute highlight, > the crystal line< is dedicated to the late, great kurt hauenstein aka supermax. superbly cut loud at 45rpm, this epic tribute is what vinyl addicts dream of hearing.

the first world unknown 12 inch kicks off with a slamming piece of prototype house from glasgows naum gabo aka jonnie wilkes from optimo and his production partner james savage. showing that a relatively low pace doesnt mean any drop in energy levels and dancefloor pump power, whop! cracks along like something from an alternate reality version of 1980’s chicago. its as easy to imagine it rocking the house at medusas or the box as it is to envision it in the present day soundtracking some kind of bizarro fetish party or a particularly intense session at berghain’s lab-oratory. this is jacking in the true sense of the word. on the flip side italian born berlin resident franz underwear ups the tempo with a stunning piece of slamming european musclebeat. shades of ibiza 88-89 pervade here, the kind of pumping, chunky synth action, teutonic vocal exhortations and vaguely menacing but ultimately benign vibe that sent thousands of potty european kids totally round the bend and changed the world of dance music forever.

>black lab< is a slow cosmic dancer, while the remix by japanese nu disco artist discosession is deep and gorgeous slowhouse. >torus< is like a pre-techno sound which came from progressive rock.

we are pleased as punch to have this one on dissident. as you no doubt know one half of naum gabo is mr jonnie wilkes aka one half of optimo and unless i got totally the wrong end of the stick when i spoke to jonnie this is the first actual naum gabo release after a bunch of excellent remixes. its a low slung groove for all proper dancefloors with a rubbery bassline, an uber-classic arpeggio, a super-cool synth line and all manner of dubby spacey trippy business going on. i guess this one will fly out even quicker than usual so get them skates on people
