soul safari started as a blog to showcase the music of africa with a strong emphasis on south africa. now in its 6th year, soul safari is proud to present the third volume of the compilation Ôtownship jive & kwela jazzÕ, a collection of rare gems originally released as shellac 78Õs in the period 1960-1965 in south africa. on this third volume the selection features the gorgeous close harmony vocal groups singing in the tradition of american r & b and doo wop. but always with that typical south african swing and sung in the zulu or xhosa languages.

shamrock grew up in the township called ‘kwathema’, in the east of johannesburg. he has being crazy for music since he was a young child, and at primary school he sang as the soloist in the choir. everyone now knows that south africa is the house music capitol of the world! most young upcoming producers look up the american and european producers, but shamrock’s sound is standing out from the rest, as he’s been digging into his african roots to come up with his own style of music, working with mainly south african musicians, only using the computer to record the audio. on this album he’s also featured international musicians han litz,flutist from the netherlands, asali, vocalist from kenya, andy compton, from the uk, and jimmy gabriel on sax from nigeria.

dj spoko was born marvin ramalepe, raised in the rural town of tzaneen in northern south africa, where he says there was no first or third class—all the same. he started producing on a pc at age 12, after moving with his brother kelly rams ramalepe to atteridgeville, a 99%-black township outside the mostly white city of pretoria – to find their father. they lived in an area called ghost town, near atteridgeville s cemetery, where as the neighborhood s premiere producer, young spoko earned the nickname ghost. the title of his new ghost town ep

in 2009 the internationally acclaimed german director tom tykwer (perfume, run lola run, the international) supervised a film project in kenyas largest township kibera together with his wife marie steinmann. they put together a team of international film pros that each mentored one film student and helped them put together the movie soul boy. a story about a boy who has to go on a journey to rescue his fathers soul from a mysterious voodoo women.
the result of xavers score is a percussive journey reminiscent of minimal music from the 60s paired with african vibes but completely void of world music cliches. its closer to krautrock and steve reich than to the commonly shallow perception of indigenous music by first world movie directors. full of odd sounding kalimbas and plucky guitars, backed by heavy orchestral drumming and floating e-bows.

mzo bullets track >casablanca< has become a sought after underground classic over the last 18 months, so when it landed here as part of our township funk compilation album we thought we would do it justice and give it a full vinyl release. as our friends hot city were jumping around to it when they heard it, we decided to let them loose on the remix. already picking up plays from benji b over at radio 1 plus dj support from the likes of diplo, kissy sellout, doorly and andy george.

alan abrahams, the man behind portable, emerged out of the ruins of a post apartheid south africa. growing up in an impoverished cape town township, tagged >beverly hills< by the locals, abrahams was always immersed in his sisters ritual of getting ready for a night out to a soundtrack of 80s soul, hi life and hip hop. inspired by the first batch of chicago house records, the foundations were laid for his future in music. experimenting with ways of combining traditional african rhythms with the 4/4 sound of house,abrahams completed various projects in south africa. most of which gave a commentary to the political turmoil of the country at the time. abrahams inevitably became frustrated by the geographic isolation of the country and relocated to london in 1997. in the uk abrahams went on to complete various releases for internationally recognised labels such as context and background records before starting up his own label, süd electronic in 2002
