it has been four long years since noahs last album, blind alignments, was released here on thoughtless, and much has happened since: extensive tour dates, numerous singles and collaborations, a lingering break-up, a move across the atlantic, 80 releases here on preds thoughtless imprint, tests of new music technology, and the sudden death of his father, all this and more transpired as his latest full-length effort, third culture, took shape. traversing these highs and lows, the result breaks new ground for pred, building on the dub-inflected techno and house that fills his discography, yet reaching far beyond anything we have heard from him before.

named in homage to the series of collectable football cards from the 1970s, the rothmans label follows the inaugural mario kempes release with another long-haired icon being given his dues in the form of the harald toni schumacher release, complete with another four tracks of chugging techno-disco. emotional responses timothy j fairplay kicks things off with *off the rails*, an expectedly dark and tense piece of carpenter-esque synth, while lwe writer per bojsen-moller delivers the atmospheric techno of *staying late*, whose rippling analogue bassline gives way to an unexpectedly funky breakdown. on the flip, steve cooks *noahs arp* takes things a balearic house direction with its thick, filtered analogue textures adding some psychedelic colour to its mid-tempo grooves, while emile strunzs *magnetic* adds some acid flavour to its low-swung, vocoder saturated italo swagger.

with new artist noah pred, the highgrade family adds another exciting voice to the labels musical cosmos. although the canadian producer, dj and founder of his own label thoughtless is already internationally saavy, he recently decided to move to the worlds hub of electronic music and pitch his tent in berlin. included in his luggage: his very own creative perspective, a great sense for aesthetics and an unerring feeling for music, learnt in part, from his many years as a bassist. noahs first ep for berlin label, highgrade records sets an exciting precedent. the track >motive unknown< trickles organically into the aural canals, before the drips become digital drops and the track comes crashing from the speakers in a steady flow. the entire piece is simultaeneously suspended and captivating. no wonder then, that the remixes from deepchild and phonokemi manage to bring out further different facets of a already multifaceted track. while deepchild brings a dub element, phonokemi move the tune into darker musical territory. its brought back with noah preds folding cranes, which follows the thread through a musical universe infused with pounding and grinding percussion.
