jordan klassen trifft mit seinem folk-pop den ton der zeit, klingt dabei jedoch nicht wie ein jedermann. intim und eingängig dürfen wir den musiker auf seinem debütalbum „repentance“ kennen lernen. warme und detailverliebte songs sind sein metier, bei denen sich zu seiner stimme eine feine melodie und außergewöhnlicher rhythmus gesellt. die erste albumsingle „go to me“ ist ein paradebeispiel dafür, auch die bunte instrumentalisierung des albums klingt daraus hervor: glockenspiel, bläser, streicher und die ukulele sind nur einige davon.

mit seinem longplay-debüt tritt der produzent und sänger aus sacramento endlich mal selbst ins licht der Öffentlichkeit. als mitmusiker von zach hill, techniker und co-produzent der dirty projectors und gitarrist für marnie stern stand raleigh moncrief stets in der zweiten reihe, auf >watered lawn< rückt er ganz nach vorn. selbst gemachter elektronik-soul, sich vortastende psychedelic, das ganze im steten wechselspiel aus hell und dunkel und folkig intim vorgetragen. dabei schmiegt sich moncriefs herzschmerziger falsett an westafrikanische gitarren, synthie-effekte und verhallte beats. aus melodien werden rhythmen, aus moll wird dur, aus r&b grunge. und manchmal klingt es wie ein in acetat getauchtes stück von panda bear.

soul camps smashing dubbed out, boogified original ( released on scr007 ) returns in 4 mixes by a finger-licking allstar cast. sense records artist soul parlor donats a laid-back, smoked out off-beat funkster with blinding rhodes, edgy, sharp beats and futuristic sounds galore. french production team affol’man keep the funk level high but this time embeded in a raw, slow-burning 4/4 groove that shows some oldschool hip-hop attitude. martin landsky and michael vater ( aka phonique ) represent the intim label in fine style: stripped down with loads of room for the original organ pads, subtle percussion patterns in the background and a dangerous bassline with a dub leaning. hamburg house messengers snider ( silver recordings ) and titus keep it on the dub side with a growling, slow-burning groover that twist your heads with some strange, haunting string stabs and hits you low at the same time with it’s gnarling analogue bassline. top-notch package bringing the goods for just everyone!

der titel >u&i< war fŸr leila essentiell, weil er intim und universell ist, persšnlich und doch losgelšst. in Šsthetischen fragen macht sie keine kompromisse, auch wenn celine dion, the pierces und frau gaga mit dem gleichen titel schon ankamen.
