the tel-aviv based label parallax brings yogg and pharaoh together for their 8th vinyl release. it starts off with the epic title track, a laid-back bassy groove surrounded by crispy hits and shifted electrical noises, building up to a climatic second part which fuses a lot of the producers unique soundscapes, all on a hypnotic pounding rhythm section. this is followed by a quirky broken electronica short, -ompti-, chopped-up modular sweeps and lush melodic hints create this uniquely structured a2 track. the b-side starts of with -maurice-, a more direct and intensive techno cut, which also breaks into an energetic – wobbly 2nd section which also features many of their unique sound explorations in a dramatic final section. b2, -abadei- has a deeper buildup approach for most of it, starting from a pure yet uneven rhythm section, and growing into a mass of counterparts and layers of noise and crackle. the ep ends with an unlisted locked-groove, an intense and dirty industrial-techno groove.

the saqqara ep is a multilayered, sonic canvas from the mind of chris barratt, as he launches his new alias, baratt, for life and death. fine brushstrokes move from all areas of his musical hideout, spreading over five, varied, aural sculptures, each one warping and weaving on its own cosmic trajectory. pooling from key aspects of his eagles & butterflies project, barratt induces new musical shades, hinting at moments of disco and funk, through a lens of psychedelia. the title track is a late-night floor-filler - a bold yet uniquely personal necropolis built from riveting delays and arpeggiators. time bending sees dj tennis join in, stepping up with his trademark, rough around the edges production aesthetic, en route to unknown destinations. barratt hones-in on a confident, stripped-down style on khaos - rhythm versus melody just in time for festival season. 1983 soundtracks a ride to utopia on a rocket-fueled vespa, leading to collider, the land of un-quantised madness, where the most treasured of synthesisers live amongst their drum machine counterparts. flowing yet incredibly interconnected, saqqara is best interpreted as a mini artist album - the first of many barratt offerings.

in-demand producer flashmob delivers a masterful two-piece assault on his hot creations debut, entitled the lone brazilian. the ep opens with the title track, fronting a funk-laden bassline and percussive, driving drums. tribalistic male and female chants break the track up, adding depth to the unfolding journey. next up, lower level supplies a deeper trip. a tight, assertive drum track counterparts a short, wandering bassline to form a settled, rolling feel. italian artist flashmob, real name alessandro magani, is a renowned producer and remixer, label owner and touring dj. since 2011 hes released on the worlds biggest labels, such as get physical, defected, kompakt, snatch! to name a few, and now delivers his bespoke sound for hot creations.

swedish artist ubx127 is back on figure with what might just be his most accomplished release to date. spanning an arc cross four diverse tracks, the story told is abstract yet full of imagination. gently pulsating crystalline opener woid carefully sets a vast open scene, covered in gushes of interplanetary winds. first contact is made on a2, its electro-esque drive and spiky synths hinting at its alien origins. a taste of their mighty technology is given on watch out below, booming with a propulsive punch and constantly swelling in intensity. relief comes in form of singularity, a beautiful, long-winding closer, on which soothing arps effortlessly outweigh their beaty counterparts. having already proven his mastery of the machines with three stellar eps for the label last year, this record further showcases ubx127s special talent of crafting tunes that are as ripe with drama as they are ready for the floor.

fresh off the back of a chart topping unity through sound release foundation audio head honcho chad dubz comes correct with three sound system bangers ready for the dance! opener “kingdom dub” is a relentless display of dubstep pressure with its gnarly, pulsating sub twisting and turning throughout the track to devastating effect. it has been a firm favorite in chads sets over the past year and is certified to destroy the dance floor. as the name suggests “space cadet” is a wavier affair. - its peculiar drum patterns and quirky effects combine to form a superbly strange track that retains the heavy sub sensibilities and darkness of its counterparts. closer “drainpipe” keeps the dubstep fundamentals in tact with heavy subs, deranged mids, sparse atmospheres and industrial sounding percussion to create a mechanical monster, rapidly building momentum until it turns into all manner of chaos on the second drop. with fav005, chad dubz has created a fine display of sound system- shaking-pure-dubstep-musical-goodness with possibly his best release yet... essential!

thule s dark doppelganger ae recordings was revived last year with the excellent freyja ep by nonnimal, and now the saga continues with this devastatingly on-point release from cold. much like the vibe on thule, the music on thule continues to channel the mood of the icy tundra into refined, modern club tracks, but there s definitely a more sinister intent at work in these tracks from cold. -aerials- is a nightmarish chugger loaded with eerie sonics, while -phased out- lays down some fine dubby processing over a bed of chilly chord pulses. -exiles- is a standout track thanks to its crafty groove, coming on a little more housey than its counterparts but still heavier than the average thule jam.

the ronda’s are various motorways that cross the condal city from it’s opposing corners, just as it’s bell way counterparts, this one’s take you into many different perspectives of the metropolitan area, locations where there’s a park full of green and sun every day, are also tunnels full of pollution, machines and constant darkness. drive carefully

it’s now pretty obvious that disco influence has not only been powerful in western clubs. it has also influenced musicians all around the world, and west-indies islands are no exception to the rule. indeed, at that time in the caribbean territories, local musicians and producers seized the sound of their us counterparts, and make it their own, melting-up disco, funk, and boogie (even early rap) elements with some more traditional or local styles. apart from some obvious titles which made it to the charts, very few was known on these productions until recently. from an initial pre-selection of 40 tracks, favorite recordings and waxist teamed up to narrow down the actual tracklist. with no pretention to be exhaustive, this selection represents a tiny sample of a broader ocean of quality caribbean disco/boogie tunes. favorite recordings & waxist are very happy and proud to bring back lights on some of these rare tunes.

blue hawaii, arbutus records and many of their montreal counterparts all began with the same breath in early 2010. to date blue hawaii has released an 8 song ep: in may of that year, blooming summer (arbutus records 2010) was recorded following the pairs travels in central america. it frames a time of warmth and novelty, featuring dense female harmonies, tape saturated synths, guitars and drum machines. eventually ra- returned to her role in braids, touring constantly, while ag– moved to europe, treading deeper into dance music, electronics, and production. the two decided to make untogether in 2012, they began recording on new years day in vancouver and intermittently worked on the project until summer broke in montreal. the music followed their winter in canada, it became colder, more introspective. it again captured a time and place, but instead of a dense saturation of love and excitement, this record reflects the vast world of self-awareness and delicacy.

in 1986 steve earles new brand of country-rock music was taking nashville by storm. his debut album >guitar town< topped the billboard country album charts, as did the single with the same title.
influenced by bruce springsteen (who was earles eureka!) and townes van zandt (after whom he named his firstborn), this was one of the strongest & most confident debut albums released in the 80s.
he showed an angry literacy, a dark sense of humour & a street-smart snarl that was uncommon amongst his country counterparts and made him stand out amongst the crowd. but he was also ostracised because of his anti-vietnam stance & long hair.
this is the first vinyl re-issue of this double grammy nominated album since its original release! comes on audiophile 180 grams vinyl, including bonus track and insert.

the moustached disco avengers at sccucci manucci drop their latest missive, featuring more transmissions from the disco underground. argentinean based toomy disco provides >what goes around<, a tightly produced disco-house number with horn snippets woven around low-slung grooves, whilst the glue deliver >without you< a hazy slo-mo looper with vocal teases and hypnotic guitar licks. on the flip, south west seven lock themselves into a fast moving groove with >what have i got to do<, a track that contrasts its fast rhythmic pulse with vocals and guitars that slowly emerge from the filtered ether. aeromaschine close proceedings with >deep champagne<, combining a deep and melodic bassline with improvisational touches and glitchy vocal stutters, it successfully forges its own sound whilst keeping in line with his disco counterparts.

after the fittingly excellent 30th release from markatonio, analytic trail waste no time in delivering their next release, this time coming from scottish producer hans bouffmyhre. the paisley based artist has graced perc trax, harthouse and jochim speiths affin with his releases in the past and his production continues to garner support from a wide and revered array of djs. someone im not boldly kicks off the ep with a dark but grooved-out edge which will please fans of his previous work for perc trax wintery, late night and uncompromising techno. bermuda tool follows and pushes further into the darker territories of techno with a lazy pace providing counterpoint to a tapestry of moody effects. self punishment ramps up the energy but keeps the sinister, mechanical vibes of its counterparts while final cut planet deception closes proceedings with a drum focused workout with some killer yet simple snare work.

hailing from boston, massachusetts, one happy island also had a stellar 2010, releasing their own eponymous debut album, an lp filled with a sense of wonder, fun and everything from autumnal, orchestral ruminations to farfisa-fired garage-pop.

it should be indicative of how big or influencial a genre is becoming when you start getting dubstep records from sweden probably one of the least grimey countries on this planet apart from issues of genre politics musically this ep has got nothing lesser in comparison to its uk counterparts its dark dirty and not shy to pile up those bass frequencies and its hard not to notice those arabic undertones going on through the whole record (sb)
