rod modell returns as deepchord for his first solo release on astral industries since inaugurating the label with his sought-after ‘lanterns’ ep. consisting of two stunning long-form pieces split on one side each, immersions¿ captures the emotive, halcyon sound that rod has long become synonymous with. opening with glistening ambient textures, ‘immersion i’ grows into an 18-minute piece of deep rolling dub techno. on the other side ‘immersion ii’ paints pristine soundscapes of soft, lapping waves, underpinned by submerged pulsations that rise to the surface to continue its deep space explorations. two highly refined and inspiring tracks that sit on the apogee of this sound.
ive never met rod modell (deepchord) in person, but we have met through music. he found an obscure cassette of chi music (from 86), sent it to astral industries and paved the way for the release (30 years later) of the original recordings in 2016. since then, weve exchanged ideas and good music. i sent rod a preview of the kallikatsou recordings - he really liked it - and here came the idea for a remix of lanterns. i started working on some random, lo-fi samples from youtube, using audacity, perhaps the simplest way of producing loops and samples. it’s the only computer based system that feels like the tape recorders i used to work with. i sent the first sketches to rod on facebook, but they ended up in the wrong inbox. i forgot about them, but months later he came back saying he loved them. i decided to go back to working on them, maintaining the lo-fi approach. i began manipulating the samples: time-stretching, tempo and pitch-shifting, mixing different layers and adding old-school monophonic old speaker effects, delays and loops. i used a few field recordings, voices and samples from my early ambient cassettes, and they matched. ario from astral industries got involved and the experiment turned into a plan a vinyl release - red lantern at the kallkatsou.
hanyo van oosterom lived in the small cave of the kallikatsou in the early eighties, finding inspiration there for the chi project (1983-1986). from the nineties to 2006 he created drones, loops, samples and soundscapes, traveling numerous times annually back and forth to the kallikatsou for fine-tuning. with the original recordings and bamboo recordings, both strongly connected to the kallikatsou, creating the perfect timeframe, “the circle is closed. together these recordings reflect and express the different aspects of the experience. a trilogy of random dream-catching over 30 years.”
the material collated on this third release from heavenly music corporation was composed specifically for st. giga in japan, a satellite broadcast radio station transmitting ethereal audio harmony 24 hours a day. what made this station otherworldly was its programming, motivated by tidal movements, the aquatic ebbs and flows of each day synchronised to the activity and intensity of the music broadcast.
about the bamboo recordings: jacobus derwort started exploring sonic soundscapes listening to his short-wave world receiver at the age of 12. there he would hear music from africa, china, japan, indonesia, south america and beyond. he started playing guitar, piano, percussion and saxophone. he met hanyo van oosterom in 1978 and they started the legendary cult rock band, the jones . derwort was playing the sax, van oosterom the drums. they started conducting sound experiments in hanyo’s small cellar in the dutch village of krimpen aan den ijssel. in the early eighties they made their first cassette, the kallikatsou . hanyo started the ambient collective chi in 1983. jacobus was the first musician to join chi. together, they went to the magic rock “the kallikatsou” on the island of patmos, greece. here, hanyo had stayed for months in a cave for some deep soul-searching. he heard the sound of chi in the silence of the night like a message from out of space. being together at the kallikatsou they shaped the foundation of chi, making handmade flutes from local bamboo and conducting field recordings of water, crickets, owls, goats, wind, etc...

peter michael hamel emerged from the 70s krautrock scene dreaming of “the blue flower growing between the milestones on the road to a future world-music”. a truly visionary artist who worked and studied with john cage, morton feldman and terry riley, his 1980 colours of time lp - an epic, sprawling, 22-minute saga - was hailed by the guardian’s rob fitzpatrick as “an absolute masterpiece of skull-bursting, synth-led ambient minimalism”. thirty six years on, astral industries reinterpret hamel s original vision with remixes from two contemporary heavyweights - wolfgang voigt and rod modell (aka deepchord). each expansive interpretation invites you to step outside of reality and into an alternative imagination of hamel s future world, spiralling into the colours and slowly out of time itself. original artwork by theo ellsworth and a massive thanks to peter michael hamel & eckart rahn.
chi started in the late punk years in the early eighties. a time of change and mind-blowing albums. we started doing sound experiments in an old farm in moordrecht (thanks to jan van rhee and kees van der veer). in the summer, all the doors and windows were open, birds flew in and out. in the distance we saw the highway to rotterdam. in the winter we sat close together, no heating, only blankets, candles and brandy.

* then it was time for the man himself, wolfgang voigt. this, to put it simply, was a masterclass in ambient music. the sounds, beautiful - the transitions - perfect - the experience, unforgettable. the sound emanating from his quite simple set up filled up the church completely, in a room lit only by a few candles, his music shone through and brought everything to life. everyone and everything became one with the music, moving with its ups and downs, delighting in its near perfection. i went to this concert expecting something amazing, i got much more than that, an enthralling evening from start to finish *. words by mohammed ashraf.
lanterns - an epic journey through an evolving sonic landscape propelled by the churning momentum of reverb-soaked percussion. red lantern is an ode to the eerie red glow that once beckoned sailors to the port of amsterdam - on one side, the gentle thud of a bass drum rolls beneath haunting yet uplifting pads whilst on the reverse, bubbling bass underpins echoes of a shoreline that shifts in and out of focus. blue lantern merges dub techno and ambient experimentation, showcasing modells impressive talents in sound design and the diverse influences that span his 25-year career as a musician
