aretha franklin is a giant both of soul and american popular music. aretha was recognised as a talented musician at an early age. a gifted pianist and with a voice already containing the power that would become her trademark. this collection puts a spotlight on the early columbia years and gives a unique insight into the development of a singer who has long since become a household name. pressing on 180 gram vinyl.

this album has been many years in the making. around 2005 we were gigging, playing hip hop breaks and supporting acts like krs-one and raekwon. we wrote a lot of our own material, but we never properly recorded it in a studio, we did however make lots of -one mic- recordings onto a mini-disk player. tom kept hold of all of these recordings and in 2011 send copies of everything to the rest of the band. a short list of 30 were chosen to record properly. a basic studio was booked, and recording began, initially it was pretty basic, just drums, bass & keys with guitars overdubbed the following day. with these foundation rhythm tracks tom went away and edited them, creating structure, extra layers and demo mixes. these demo mixes were used to send to mcs. it was decided to go with american mcs as the type of thing we listened to when we wrote a lot of our material was classic 90s hip hop. el da sensei & sadat x were the first to respond to our request, and soon features were flying through ever other week. we actually had enough material for 2 albums, but picked what we wanted to represent our first release and continued to develop the material, including adding session musicians for harps, brass, strings and cuts. we chose 4 tracks to create videos for and got the ball rolling with various video makers. the final year was spent mixing, sequencing and deciding on artwork. the title cinder hill is reference to where the band spent many afternoons practicing at john & joe’s parent’s house, their mum maggie passed away in 2016 and the album is dedicated to her for her endless support and love for the music.

this time, the marvellous nighttime world of buenos aires is reflected by the rhythms and sounds of carisma (carolina stegmayer and ismael pinkler), who live together in the centre of the south american capital. since three years they are delivering these tracks directly (directamente) from their flat through the citys dark alleys to its underground venues – producing music to play it right away, written in a dialogue between studio and booth, at the djs parejas legendary fun fun parties, the famous dengue nights, and other spots.

here we go with the *eine stadt frisst ihre helden* e.p., four rough and raw techno machines down from the evil subsea dungeons by the label head himself aka syntax error. every track tells a story out of the snorky life from christian in snorkcity giessen! el expreso de cerveza, do a beer pub tour in giessen and you definitely know that this means. *mad insomnia causing insects* contains samples which are provided by mad matze from his south america holiday, real monster quadrills noice! if this is not freaking you out, the *freak wave* will do, breaking over your head that crashes you on the deepest underground as possible. if this is not enough, enjoy some *döret talk* from the backstage! more dört that you can expect! this e.p. absolutely says eat my shorts and go fuck yourself! to be or not to be snorky! that is the question!

for its 8th installment, the funk mundial series temporarily moves to buenos aires, argentinia to present what is quite possibly the first ever baile funk cumbia record to be released. yes, we re talking about a world premiere here: the two music styles that recently put south america on the dj radar again, are melting together in funk mundial #8: baile funk meets cumbia.for this volume, four of the hottest producers of buenos aires digi-cumbia label zzk teamed up with various baile funk mcs from rio de janeiro. zzk is to cumbia what man recordings is to baile funk û mixing up one raw, regional music style with the best of various genres to create a unique new sound. founded as a label in 2008, zzk broke internationally with their mixtapes, in which cumbia û the traditional pan-latin-american dancehall sound û was mixed up with reggaeton, hip hop and various forms of bass music. recently, the label released its first compilation and full artist albums.

ziggy kinders last outing on souvenir proved to be one of the highlights of 2007. bailamos, a record destined to make love to the converging worlds of european techno and south american latin music was hailed by artists like laurent garnier, koze and mike shannon for its mysterious melodies and enveloping percussion while the a-side que pasa maria was championed by anja schneider and radioslave. fans of tiefschwarzs daring souvenir imprint will be in no doubt as to what lies in store for the label’s tenth release. >flipflop crash< is another typically ziggy workout destined for a discerning international dancefloor. disorientating percussion and flanging effects dance around an insistent throbbing bassline while a female vocal whispers in french. the warm melodies layering the track hint at the sultriness of >bailamos< , but this is a continuation not a revisitation and an impressive step forward for ziggys sound. on the flip chilean star pier bucci takes up the remix reigns. after impressing with his ahead-of-its-time familia lp on crosstown rebels in 2005 and last years club bomb hay consuelo, his addition to the souvenir roster is another memorable recruitment with current label remix talents including artists like carl craig, tiefschwarz, shonky, samim, kiki & silversurfer and radioslave. his interpretation adds an injection of urgency to ziggys original, stripping the vocals back to a minimum to make way for an epic delay soaked synth hook. its a remix destined for the end of a night or that perfect plateau of a party when the dancefloor has been moving for hours waiting for a hypnotising melody such as this to sweep it onto another level
