welcome to ‘magic maze’ a guided meditation from oslo’s helene rickard. over two sides of a c60 cassette, the norwegian dj curates an immersive journey through imaginary landscapes and possible musics, marrying the organic and synthetic into a deep tissue massage of healing frequencies. showing infinite patience, the camp cosmic regular gradually oscillates between fourth world exotica and pastoral new age, at once opening our minds with the celestial splendour of crystalline chimes connecting us all with future primitive hymns. as we float along under helene’s benevolent gaze we encounter each of the elements, oceanic reverb, vaporous reeds, earthy drones and smouldering tones, each imparting its own ancient wisdom as we pass.
but enlightenment seldom comes without adversity and the mixtape’s most divine moments often appear in the wake of disorienting intensity. fortune favours the brave, and if you free your mind, open your heart and follow the twists and turns of the ‘magic maze’, your rewards with be both earthly and divine.

on 005 ken turns away from the light and invites you into the dark with adelaide’s furious frank, who dishes up a selection of psychedelic burners and formidable squelch. on this release frank pays tribute to the many mushroom picking spots in the surrounding hills of his hometown, and does them justice with an assortment of broken beats, affected drum flourishes and paranoid synths. over the course of the 5-tracker, frank presents sounds for the frayed final edges of a night out dancing, where shadows start to play tricks on the mind and each remaining track poses more questions than answers. none typify this nervous energy more so than a2 “dangerous dancer”, with it’s smoked out electro punctuated by a wailing 303 intended for dancers that may have gone too far, but are willing to take the next step.

sugarhouse records debut release is a collaboration between artists maurice jnr & roy rozell. the title track, magic mountain, featuring seb miguel on keys, provides a blissful introduction to the label s own brand of house. the laid back swing of -dane s groove-, relentless hustle of popcorn riddim and the refreshing fizz of lemonade complete the ep. sugarhouse records operates from sugarhouse studios in east london, in association with turner prize nominated design collective assemble. original artwork by alistair hanson.
