though quality techno is regularly associated with the colder climates of berlin and detroit, the recent developments happening on the iberian peninsula have been hard to ignore. one of the region’s more interesting and consistent producers in this decade has been maceo plex, owner of the ellum audio label. armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of signature club sounds, and with an ability to investigate ‘darker’ side of modern life (a tendency that can be heard especially well on past plex-produced tracks like “conjure balearia”), plex has located the “goldilocks zone” between funk liberation and mechanical control. mastering this balancing act is a skill that separates the best producers from the legions of also-rans: it shines through in his back catalog and is back in full force for his new “tesseract” ep on ellum.

ltd nice price deal - culprit favourite and nyc wonder m a n i k returns with his second release for the label with >she watches me<, featuring a choice remix from the revenge.
few producers in underground dance music have had as prolifically dense an output as chris manik (m a n i k) over the last two years. he joins the-likes-of maya jane coles, maceo plex and subb-an, as an artist who seem to have unnerving quality control, making every one of their tracks count. no wonder then, that culprit was delighted for m a n i k to return for his second record on the label, and his first full original release since the acclaimed lp for ovum earlier this year. culprit scored another coup when m a n i k, who prefers for his original music to stand alone, agreed to have >she watches me< be remixed. the legendary graeme clark aka the revenge was a fitting choice for this rare occasion.
dj suppport: roman flügel, archie hamilton, maceo plex, joseph capriati, tiga, nicole moudaber, richie hawtin, claptone, kollektiv turmstrasse and many more.
fans of electro’s big hitter djs such as helena hauff, dave clarke, umek, maceo plex, and umwelt won’t have escaped the sonic assaults of dutch artist rxmode and his fellow transhumanism collective members, w1b0, slaves of sinus, tfhats.
rxmode’s last ep cerberus was very much the ep he’d been building up to since his debut on bass agenda recordings back in 2015, dark, sinister, heavy, and distinctive.
one of the tracks from that ep, degraded, gets the remix treatment from the other transhumanism members on this, the third vinyl release the collective have put out.
!! repress !! points new year, new concept: maceo plex locks down 2018 with a fabriclive mix and his new mutant series that sets out to explore the more mutated side of his signature cosmic techno further than ever before. similar to his conjure series in 2015, the new releases will reside across labels run by peers maceo respects and is inspired by, with some also featuring on his much loved ellum imprint. correspondant are proud to release the debut ep, mutant 1. three tracks deep, each version tells the same story from a different perspective, mutant disco tells it from the bassline’s point of view as a latent funk thumps with wry mischief, mutant dx shows things from melodic side with its rolling bulbous bass lead while mutant moog closes the ep by surging us even deeper into the stars with a crisp sinewy arpeggio that sucks us in and, like all card carrying mutants, refuses to let us go. time to mutate.
opening this essential release is the slow and spaced out groove of replicant v1, with fat synths and dark spacecraft sounds circling you as the drums grow ever bigger. shoulder of orion then drops into a rickety groove with soulful pads stretching off to the horizon as rough drums march below. proving he has real range, motor rotor is a deep and driving track that conveys a real sense of motion as it races along an intergalactic highway, and love on time picks up the pace yet further with twisted synths roaming free above a motorik kick and icy hi hats. last of all for the digital release, replicant v2 is a spacey and dramatic techno effort with widescreen pads and gurgling synths making for a turbulent ride. first vinyl bonus cut hang on is a forceful seven minutes of eerie and cosmic techno that stretches out in all directions as manic melodies rain down from above. lastly, traktion is full of ominous drones, crashing percussion and sombre pads and makes for a dramatic and driving track that is filled with pain
global powerhouse maceo plex announces a long-awaited forthcoming album with the first single on his ellum imprint, featuring two stunning and spaced out compositions in the solar sampler.
following the huge success of dlm 004 and the massive appeal of roman flugels remix of idle eyes (as charted by all from dixon to michael mayer, dan avery to maceo plex), here is a little surprise from our camp. glockd is c.a.rs trademark washed out sarcasm, bleached cynicism, the track forages paths through chloes dark mind. it was one of the first tracks she wrote on her own, and was recorded down the bunker with timothy j fairplay. a favourite of andrew weatherall (who nominated my friend, the c.a.r album, as one of the best releases of 2014), it is now coming full-circle, being given a stomping shuffle air guitar dance-floor rework by the asphodells … if you liked our lord sabres remix of fuck buttons this is for you. electronics looking at the floor & air guitar. following it is manfredas (the protégé of les disques de la mort) vocal version of angelina, a request from many after the instrumental being released earlier this year. the northern wulf is biting again. and he bites hard.
we are happy to welcome maceo plex to drumcode with the fourth instalment of his conjure series, conjure infinity . featuring two tracks conjure dreams and conjure floyd , both are peak time monsters that introduce two very different elements. conjure dreams utilises a groovy, melodic bass that is reinforced using tight thumping drums to shatter any dance floor into the universe. conjure floyd builds into a more heads down techno vibe with a very interesting breakdown. two sure fire tracks to ignite the floor.
hot on the heels of the recent maceo plex and shall ocin & fiberroot eps comes another stonking release from ellum. odd parents (brian & christine) grace the label for the second time with a double-header, heavy hitter complete with maceo plex remix.
