Few producers in underground dance music have had as prolifically dense an output as Chris Manik (M A N I K) over the last two years. He joins the-likes-of Maya Jane Coles, Maceo Plex and Subb-An, as an artist who seem to have unnerving quality control, making every one of their tracks count. No wonder then, that Culprit was delighted for M A N I K to return for his second record on the label, and his first full original release since the acclaimed LP for Ovum earlier this year. Culprit scored another coup when M A N I K, who prefers for his original music to stand alone, agreed to have >She Watches Me< be remixed. The legendary Graeme Clark aka The Revenge was a fitting choice for this rare occasion.
With consecutive performances at Culprit's LA rooftop parties in 2010 and 2011, and gigs alongside Droog at DEMF and Miami, M A N I K and Culprit have formed a strong bond in the last two years. Blessed with a natural talent in the studio combined with a prodigious work-ethic, M A N I K is a artist whose name, it’s safe to say, people will be hearing for years to come, and he’s set to play a key role in Culprit’s forward creative movement. M A N I K’s second release on label is, as was his first, an authentic and personal representation of where he is as a producer. A Queens, NYC native, Chris brings his suburban music influences abound; over two A-side worthy songs he channels classic hiphop, disco and funk but imbues them with a distinctly modern feel. On ‘She Watches Me’ M A N I K takes subtle inspiration from the funkified synth lines of early 90s West Coast hip-hop and R'n'B, adding just enough of his vocal touches to create a track with a real swing and style of its own.
‘Crazy’ takes a more head down approach, reinforcing M A N I K’s love for acid lines, with a more propulsive drive and heavier bottom end. On ‘Crazy’ M A N I K delivers his version of modern urban dance music, a subtle mish-mash of genres, avoiding easy categorization and instead focusing on groove and feeling.
Culprit has long followed The Revenge’s accomplished work and when an opportunity presented itself at a shared gig in Russia, Culprit’s Andrei Osyka jumped at the chance to get Graeme “The Revenge” Clark on remix duties. M A N I K was selected as the perfect foil as the mutual admiration between the two was always going to make a fortuitous and organic pairing. The Revenge adds a tougher edge to M A N I K ‘s original, while still displaying his organic disco and classic house roots.
