2017 reissue - aufgewachsen zwischen london, coventry und nigeria mit uk-grime, fela kuti, radiohead, badly drawn boy und squarepusher, liefert ghostpoet sein debutalbum auf gilles petersons brownswood-label ab. mit seiner minimalistisch-trippig-intimen mischung aus hip hop, blues, dub, trip hop und electronica macht sich der junge poet daran, in die fussstapfen von tricky zu treten.

der norwegische electro-pop-künstler gundelach hat bereits mit seiner debüt-ep und dem song games feat. ary auf sich aufmerksam gemacht. sein verletzlicher singer/songwriter-style auf soft elektronischem klangteppich lässt vergleiche mit james blake oder jamie woon durchaus zu. das debütalbum -baltus- nahm er zwischen oslo und london mit knut sævik (mungolian jetset), john calvert (ghostpoet, nao) und oyvind mathisen (cezinando, nils bech) auf. erste singleauskopplung ist das wundervolle duck hunting, ein analog elektronisches stück in nordic-noir atmosphäre, eindrucksvoll abgerundet mit gundelachs bon iver-eskem falsetto.

man of war is a significant sonic progression for the band. opening track gaia sets the tone for the release perfectly. heavy, brooding bass and glitchy, synth stabs create an imposing sonic backdrop for tom’s menacing vocal to hang on. lead and title track man of war is driven by its propulsive beats and more washes of bass and eerie electronic touches. fall crocus finds the band in contemplative mood. a heavy, regretful air hangs over the track and brings to mind the work of international superstar and mercury prize winner james blake, who the band has toured with, as well as mount kimbie and ghostpoet previously. final original cut cosmos pink is perhaps the album’s most touching effort. cloud boat have always been a band capable of inducing sincere emotion and this release is no different, taking the listener on a powerful, cathartic journey through life’s big issues. remix wise, the release features offerings from phaeleh and la – 4a. each act brings its own distinguishable flavour to man of war. phaeleh’s version features his trademark, cinematic, take on house electronics and is a typically atmospheric effort, while la – 4a takes cloud boat in a modern techno direction.

massive attack release two brand new songs, ‘come near me’ and ‘the spoils’. both songs are written and produced by massive attack’s daddy g and collaborator stew jackson and feature vocals from ghostpoet (on ‘come near me’) and hope sandoval (on ‘the spoils’). these new songs follow january’s release of the ‘ritual spirit’ ep, which was written and produced by the band’s robert del naja and collaborator euan dickinson. the video for ‘the spoils’ stars cate blanchett and is directed by john hillcoat, best known for his directorial work on films such as the road, lawless and the proposition.

caul is the new album from last harbour. based in the northern english city of manchester, last harbour play music with a dark, gothic heart yet their songs are always beautiful and transcendent. after working with producer richard formby (wild beasts, spacemen 3, ghostpoet) on two previous albums, the band took time out after touring to build their own studio in 2013. this new album was recorded in that self-created space over a year between 2013-4 and bears testament to a patient and detailed recording process that allowed time for experimentation and careful arrangement.

der 24-jährige kwes hat bereits jede menge erfahrungen im musikbiz gesammelt. so produzierte er die kritikerlieblinge speech debelle und dels, arbeitete mit micachu, ghostpoet und the xx zusammen, sowie mit damon albarn an dessen projekt drc music, dank dessen er in berührung mit warp kam. diese zeigten sich von kwes talent begeistert und boten ihm direkt einen eigenen künstlervertrag an. meantime ist kwes erste ep mit dem maintrack bashful, einem elektronischen disco-shuffle mit akribischer melodieführung und sprengseln aus soul, r&b und house, die seine idee von free pop perfekt demonstriert: populärmusik, die keine grenzen kennt, der exzentrik nicht ausweicht, ideenreichtum jeglicher vergangener regel vorzieht, bzw. einfach verspricht, dass wir von diesem jungen mann noch sehr viel aufregendes und neues hören werden!
