considered by many as -the motown of salsa,- fania records is probably the most transcendental label in the history of latin music. by bringing together the eclectic vision of dominican bandleader johnny pacheco with the business savvy of impresario jerry masucci, fania created a sound: the apex of tropical music, combined with the swing of big band jazz and the gritty vibe of american r&b. the label provided an artistic heaven for a young generation of musicians who were inspired to experiment with new musical formats. the albums recorded by willie colón, héctor lavoe, rubén blades and eddie palmieri from the early 70s to the mid- 80s went beyond the parameters of so-called -salsa- - taking latin music to unsuspected levels of sophistication. when you think latin soul you relate to a mélange of r&b and mambo rhythms intermixed culturally by and for the youth of america. it was 1974, and a brash youngster by the name of ralfi pagan walked into the offices of fania records and demanded to be heard. fania president jerry masucci allowed ralfi that opportunity, and ralfi auditioned for jerry right there in his office. it took only a few moments for masucci to realize that he was in the company of his newest recording artist, he put ralfi in touch with recording director, johnny pacheco, who hurried him into the recording studio for ralfi’s first fania recording session.

spice 1 is an undisputed west coast legend, who first hit the scene after the n.w.a. and closer to home too $hort explosion of the late 80s. as history showed, he continued that bloodline with finesse and authority. his nasal flow is menacing and strong, and fans have been consistently captivated by his hood tales since his self-titled debut in 1992. if you want thematic range with your mcs, spice isn’t that dude he is all about crime tales and the perils of ghetto life. and he attacks that storytelling sweet spot with each new cut. spice 1 boasted four singles by the time it was all said and done, and breezed to gold status on the strength of cuts like the catchy east bay gangster, the heartfelt tales and truths of welcome to the ghetto, and the thick, grooving in my neighborhood. he even produced the alcohol-themed 187 proof, another of the albums singles, and the hands-down cleverest vocal outing on the lp. sonically, the backdrops on spice 1 range from plunky, keyboard-bassline funk to deeper, fuzzy 70s samples and he sounds strong on top of both. break yourself is fueled with an electro-funk drive, 1-800 spice brings reggae flavor, and peace to my nine gets chunkier, with a well-placed p-funk one nation under a groove sample. presented here on official retail vinyl for the first time since its initial release 26 years ago, spice 1s debut holds the test of time and carries the california gangsta flag with pride. some colors just don’t fade.

get down edits return with a 3 track ep of latin inspired edits just in time for the summer. festival (just beginning) kicks things off with an exotic disco edit complete with killer horns, sultry stings and that maraca flavoured feeling tied together with an uplifting vocal hook. the a2 two man sound combines an instantly catchy bass and infectious guitar lick combo with summery brazilian lyrics and jazzy rhodes perfect for the imminent festival circuit. festival drums rounds off the e.p. striping back all the melodic elements from the original to offer up a fusion of maracas, cowbells, congas and guiros to unleash a south american styled drum tool perfect to add a little zest to any mix.

with the celebrated return of dr. octagon (dan the automator, kool keith and dj qbert) in 2017 including their first-ever live performances fans are sure to keep gobbling up the space weirdness that first surfaced more than 20 years ago. get on down presents a unique picture disc, featuring the original octagon album artwork by the legendary artist pushead. the infamous doctor’s head and lower torso reach above and below the actual 45 rpm playing surface, as if trying to escape their two-dimensional status. on the a-side is a brand-new dr. octagon song, “octagon octagon,” which picks up where the original energy left off. it’s a dark and grooving glimpse into keith’s rubberband mind, jumping abstractly from line to line, chock full of equal partscharisma and dementia. on the flip is the song for which the group is most well-known, “blue flowers.” the version presented here is the amazing “prince paul’s so beautiful” remix, which first appeared on a mo wax 12” in the uk in late 1996. it was the first meeting of the two great production minds from different eras – dan the automator and prince paul would go on to collaborate many more times over the next decade, most notably as the group handsome boy modeling school. this is another great trophy for any self-respecting kool keith and dan the automator fan, combining the old and the new in triumphant fashion.

cult duo rework are next up on my favorite robot with a five track ep that shows off their brilliantly inventive house and tech style. the production outfit of daniel varga, michael kuebler deal in left of centre and freaky house with a mischievous afterparty slant. they have been active for more than a decade now and have credits on great labels like visionquest, items & things, meant and the institution that is playhouse. the brilliantly sleazy “talk it off” opens things up with popping drums, playful lyrics and a steely sound that is designed for wonky basement parties. “valencia” goes deeper with warm drums and synths surging along next to an elastic groove that is propped up by energetic and incendiary chord stabs. it’s a subtle but high impact track that will raise the energy levels on any floor. “think about you” has vocals coated in echo and delay and trippy synths that are lively and off kilter. it makes for a track that is brilliantly loose and undulating and cannot fail to get under your skin. final track “attractive” heads in a much more techno direction with surging drums and hypnotic slithering synths that burrow deep into your brain and seep into the night. it is trance inducing for sure, and shows another side to this accomplished outfit. this is a versatile ep stuffed with killer cuts for many different moments in the night, and each is as standout as the next.

by the time mobb deep hit with their third album – hell on earth – they were solidified street legends. coming off the critically acclaimed the infamous, havoc and prodigy hit the lab and came back with a soundtrack that is fitting to its title. havoc’s production is atmospheric, laced with his trademark drums loops and sharp pianos stabs. add prodigy’s trademark flow and it’s evident that the pairing is such an amazing match. while hell on earth is essentially a continuation of the infamous you can still hear the growth in both performers and hell on earth stands as some of their best work. the album features guest appearances by nas, raekwon, method man, and frequent collaborator big noyd.

u-roy was a true reggae pioneer, dubbed the originator for good reason. bursting onto the jamaican scene in the early 1970s, he pioneered the vocal approach called “toasting,” which in addition to bringing jamaican music into a new era, was also heavily influential on an american vocal style also in its infancy: rapping. following up the record store day 2017 release of u-roy’s classic dread in a babylon, traffic entertainment group now brings us a very welcome reissue of the vocalist’s 1976 full-length (and fourth) album, natty rebel, which has been out of print for more than 30 years. produced by tony robinson (known for his work with big youth, lloyd parks, the gladiators and many more), the album’s 11 cuts range from bouncier and sometimes even disco-tinged grooves – “have mercy,” “go there natty” and the album lead-off, “babylon burning” – to the classic roots stepping that drew fans to the legendary jamaican vocalist over his long career – including “so jay jah say” and “natty kung fu.” at its core, this is a deep journey into the heart of rasta living, spoken by one of jamaica’s most underrated dub and roots legends, and it’s one of the strongest full-lengths in his expansive catalog. whether you are experiencing u-roy for the first time, or replacing your decades-old original lp, diving into this reissue of natty rebel is one hell of a way to spend an afternoon. or, if you’re not careful, a week or two.

(get bad). the result? one of the most unlikely and essential party records of 2017. queen and house music: not necessarily the most obvious of bedfellows, but music for freaks has never been a label to take the path most travelled. over the course of their de-cades long journey the label founded by luke solomon and justin harris has released uni-quely idiosyncratic dance music, establishing the label as a go-to imprint for those seeking imaginative, unpredictable records that still undeniably work on the dancefloor. their latest release might well be among the most out-there of them all. originally released back in 1984,two sharp pencils (get bad) is a record by queen drum-mer roger taylor, featuring him on vocals as well as drums, bass & guitar. now brought bang up to date via a fully official and endorsed remix courtesy of anna wall & corbi, this overlooked album track looks set to become one of the summers most essential records. born and bred in the uk, anna wall is a dj, producer and label owner who is a key player in london’s underground house music scene. her label the bricks champions up-and-coming producers, while anna herself has djd all over the world, most recently for mixmag at pacha for their ims launch party. corbi is an ibiza-based dj and producer, a&r for the highly respected fina records and co-founder of melon bomb, a party and dj collective that has in the space of just a couple of years become one of the white isles most talked-about exports. having met while working at house giant defected records some years ago, anna felt that corbi would be the perfect studio accomplice to work on the remix of two sharp pencils.

braiden s material has been slow to come out since he first landed with a bang on doldrums back in 2010. a turn on rush hour confirmed his status as a producer in command of the chops necessary to get a dancefloor shaking, but this years x years in london ost cassette was a chance for him to expand into more experimental pastures. not so on this new 12inch for his off out label, which finds braiden turning up the heat with some fiercely modern tech house workouts. v.o.l.a.t has the same kind of dangerous earworm armour that made paul woolfords erotic discourse so potent all those years ago. hydroplane meanwhile takes some of the crisp but playful tropes of pearson sound et al and straps them to a thrumming motorik beat

paper recording are back on vinyl with a fantastic debut 12- from italian duo soundersons, who have come up through the underground bologna house scene. can t get enough is a deep electro-funk slice of nu disco with diana g on vocals. it s got 80s synths and squelches, vocal hooks a plenty, clonking percussion, rhodes and that metro area / tom tom club vibe. parts i and ii are split in to vocal and instrumental over one side on continuous play for maximum dance floor action. on the flip, the mighty dj spinna brings his a game with a deep nyc take that is underground house at it s best. he uses synths, arps and the vocal to slowly build the remix that hits it s peak at the end. finally education finished things off with a raw disco cut up that hits the floor running and keeps going full pelt. one for the dancers.

c.vogt s and patrick jeremics minds work in loopy circles. endless grooves that take you off in to the wild blue. vilá is by far the strongest of the bunch. capturing that moment where the sun peaks over the horizon in some far off land. reminiscent of the days when trance wasn t a dirty word. vice takes you up in to a place where people s faces beam with positive emotion. trippy melodies roll the track ever forward while snapshot samples of the cops radio communications drift in and out of the tight groove. ekstasis is a head nodding, eyes closed journey towards your inner self. listen to the guru and do what he says. get weird people!

this release - a collaboration between ali x (alphonse from azari & iii) and mexicos theus mago - turns the heat up all the way to on and just leaves it there. the lyrical content of the title track would lead many to use descriptors like sexy, sleazy, and steamy like you wouldnt even believe, and while the music also bears that out its important to remember not to stigmatize something that almost everyone does at least a couple of times a week. vision, meanwhile, offers the perfect b-side accompaniment, a sci-fi techno workout where you dont even have to think about sex if you dont want to. the ep features dub versions of both tracks for more stripped-down club sets aimed at people who understandably have problems with the sound of the human voice. it also includes a remix by curses, whom we recently bumped into (he says cornered) in berlin and asked if hed provide one of his trademark eerie downtempo excursions. long story short: he said yes.

following on from the acclaimed “talk from home”, suzanne kraft returns to melody as truth with a second full release, “what you get for being young”. recorded in amsterdam over the course of may 2016, “what you get for being young” offers a full immersion into kraft’s ever-evolving world. a milky tip! . lush, digital manipulated synths spread across cold surfaces, metallic drums dance around skeletal song structures. whilst echoes of “talk from home” remain, they are but faint echoes, as kraft’s recent exploration into sound-design and digital manipulation confidently posits “what you get for being young” as an entirely new chapter in the artist’s growing narrative

get on down is a heavyweight slice of storming jamaican disco-reggae heat from the legendary studios of miami s tk disco empire. king sporty s version may not have been as well known as connie cases electro laden later 1982 version (also produced by sporty) but the perfect marriage of disco stylings and sports jamaican roots meant the original 1979 version was a cult classic in underground deep disco circles. over 35 years since get on down was released the keepers of the tk disco vaults have given permission for some of their classics and lesser known gems to be respectfully tweaked by contemporary producers and dj s who fully understand the lineage of the label and the music contained within. stepping up and get his hands dirty is none other than london dwelling, wolf music man medlar. a regular face behind the turntables all over the world medlar has lovingly freaked king sportys anthem for the modern dance-floor, extending the right parts in just the oh so right way, dubbing out parts that needed just a smidgen of echo here and there and generally making the track irresistible to dj s with its lovely long beat led intro. these are extremely tasteful edits, done with respect and reverence over 2 parts old school style. look out for those low flying dubbed out vox and lazer beams too, powerful stuff! this is only one of many underground disco classics that the mighty miami based tk disco label brought to the world, reimagined for 2016s dance-floor, officially sanctioned in conjunction with henry stone music / tk disco. file under - classic / essential!

two thousand has always been the official symbol of the future. two thousand has been told, represented, drawn and played centuries before the year two thousand. and now it s past. -i don t wanna get rid of this: all the changes you re making now, will simply belong to two thousand. we belong to two thousand-. white label 10- w/ unknown edits that dig heavily into jazz samples but they go beyond, creating sonic impro jams including menacing low pitched arpeggios, celestial breaks of synths and far away lights of a black continent pulsating under the crisp mastering work. included is a nice printed poster with artwork from 2000 himself.

ep opener >air rising< is melodic cut sublimely crafted over stripped back drums, tranquil drawn-out keys and soft pads with a resonating vox that seamlessly dominates to dish up a an emotive start. >carpathia< oscillates into life through bouncy tones, shifting percussion and lively atmospherics to build towards a powerful crescendo to finish the healthy three-track single off in fine form. novio dub tribes steps in to somehow cultivating the original over rippling drums, warped atmospherics and shimmering synths, the culmination of which is a dubby fusion of sounds geared towards the dynamic dance floor.

ltd 2015 repress !! fear of flyings next instalment sees the label launch a vinyl only 4 tracker with revered artist schatrax providing the previously unreleased lead track >get it right<. a booming sub bass, a few cut up disco samples and 5 1/2 minutes later you have another fine addition to mr josh brents exceedingly impressive cv. romanian duo egal 3 round off the a side with more than a nod and a wink in the direction of baby ford / thomas melchior in the minimal trippy beats of in their track >siclam<. label coowner blm gets all dubby on his tribute to daughter / dog love on the flip with northern wonder nyra getting all introspective on the deep and slightly darkly edged >casturize<.

as the music is research, pisetzky loves to get deep into bass lines of different sound dimension. his style is always powerful and melancholic, moving hearts and minds into multi layered soundscapes. he started producing in 2010 with the name fabiano valli as sound designer for fashion brands. since late 2013 he turned his profile into pisetzky, inspired by a growing milans techno scene, he started to realise his attitude into being active part of the project just - this. he already proved his musical research for the biggest europe festivals stages ( off sonar week, ade, amore, barrakud ), as in the finest clubs and parties. in the darkness of his studio or even on the hottest dancefloors, pisetzky shakes deeply souls and bodies with his dogged rhythms.

capsule labs music groups debut release is a 4 track house ep from label boss gil t (om, drop music, deeper shades). taking off with the lush sounds of flight 107, a smooth synth journey, nicely descends to get down low�. the afro cuban house beat sets a nice groove for the live jazzy vibraphone stabs of this classy track. the b side is a real bonus. the private driver really cruises and lastly, not so low is a chunky finisher remix of the title track, all done in house. locally farmed variety of true analog precision by gil tamazyan. each release has its own plastic drop card with a string being held in place with a limited pressing metal foil sticker individually numbered 1-500 on the back side of the jacket. heavyweight virgin vinyl.

get physicals first delivery for 2015 is, yet again, an ep that strays a bit off the beaten track. for this last installment, gpm290, junge junge has called upon australian native kyle pearce to set some velvety vocals to a toned-down, bittersweet delight of a track. the ‚beautiful girl ep opens with its namesake creation, a thumb piano-laden tune decorated by some seriously smoky singing just waiting to transport you far away. its followed by a handful of distinct reworkings, by audiofly who take on a dub remix and spins the song on its head to give it a new psychedelic identity. meanwhile, blond:ish throws it into darker terrain only to have the ‚beautiful girl lifted up by junge junge once again thanks to a slightly different version that turns it into danceable am epic by way of some wisely-placed kicks and claps.

irelands get down edits drop a killer release on disco deviance to kick off 2014 with a bang! the seriously infectious get down blend of disco chuggers and peak time floor-fillers means that they never fail to impress. lovingly edited and beautifully mastered for the contemporary dance floor. we hope you enjoy the music.

robosonic has been a pivotal part of off recordings roster, their releases being highly expected every time and usually meaning instant dancefloor melting magic. with a hip hop and techno background and adding many frequent flyer miles with worldwide gig schedule, the pair shows no sign of stopping. this time is no exception, cord and sacha get back in their creative roll of sample wizardry to provide two mouth watering jams. they once again prove their love for organic sounds and reivindicate the use of the turntable as an instrument, adding that old-school vibe to their trademark beats. macho madness is quite a trip, sweet rhodes over a bouncy bassline, great sample work adding guitars and an insane speech. as always, breakdowns are intense and its impossible not to dance to the groove!for the second track, robosonic joins another off family team, mat.joe and together they go deep into their hip hop influences again working the samples as only they could, a little disco flavor, a driving bass...all the ingredients are there for another instant classic and a respectful shout out to detroit producer legend j dilla, who left the game too early. r.i.p!

lets get lost return to the fold for their first release of 2013. this officially licensed release features the obscure italian / brazilian fusion of marimba do mar . this fantastic record is incredibly hard to find and a very expensive gem thats been re issued for your listening pleasure. japanese artists kza (endless flight) & cos/mes (esp institute) both turn in outstanding remixes.

jolly mayhem, this one is sure to rock the floor & is already getting major support from some serious heads! the flipside is a more mid tempo house affair but is equally as devastating. richard from milwaukee takes on better off, a stomping disco groove which escalates into full-on crowd control.its all about the classics here, with richards trademark chunky percussions & synths galore. did we mention the bassline? kick back to this one. dj kaos jolly jams imprint delivers again!

a made up sound aka 2562 and dexter deliver two remixes for arttu featuring jerry the cat. nuclear funk and get up off it get transformed from raw chicago influenced cuts into darker electro/techno hybrids by these two dutch techno wizzards. both known for their sharp productions that cross over between techno, electro and bass music they have a fresh take on the original versions. by the choice of remixers we didnt expect the standard house remixes, something more challenging would fit the spirit of the originals. this remix 12 inch might be is somewhat of a dark horse in the house orientated clone royal oak catalogue, but expectations are to there be messed up.

2010 has seen some juicy, off-the-wall techno/electronic vinyl goodies from the head space of little nobody, including the acclaimed >metropolis how?< and >robota< records - with remixes by the likes of james ruskin, justin berkovi, inigo kennedy, dj hi-shock, si begg, patrick pulsinger and steve stoll. but its the originator of the tracks who continues to push the perimeters, recently leading hi-shock, the prolific innovator behind the essential elektrax empire, to suggest that honestly, i think you are at least a couple of years ahead in your musical vision compared to other producers. little nobodys alter ego andrez bergen has also had his head buried this year in the creation of a hardboiled/noir/sci-fi novel called >tobacco-stained mountain goat<, and it was in the midst of this project - with these heady influences - that the get away from it all 12-inch project came to light. thus we got on board bas mooy (planet rhythm/audio assault) and dave tarrida (tresor/musick) to do the two scintillating re-takes here, which are downright brilliant. meanwhile little nobodys troll, on the flip-side, lives up to its claim: its hardboiled and devastatingly dirty electronica. all up, think streetwise, smack-your-glitch-up techno - dark, uber-bassy, dirty and pulsating - just the way we like it, with sardonic samples and a freestyle, postmodern attitude thats invigorating. matched up with the cool artwork by marcin markowski, this is an essential slab of wax for 4:00 am head-caving techno!

the house nerds with 2 killer tracks for lovers of rekids & cabin fever. mystery bells >down deep and dark< went the name of an old strictly rhythm compilation and thats a pretty good description of mystery bells. 909 beats propel this monster along with the payoff coming via a big-room breakdown. follow that with a variety of skippy sp1200 drum programming to finish it off. (did we mention the bells?) huge. library session no. 4 is bouncy proto-garage mixes together with spaced out vocal samples and some serious chordage. channeling old downtown 161 vibes into the present day, the nerds provide a nice counter-measure to the darker sounds of mystery bells.
