us producer d’marc cantu needs little introduction in the world of acid house and techno. since the late 2000s he’s been serving us quality musical output on labels like crème organization, m>o>s recordings, nation, altered moods or spectral sound, just to name a few. as well as his solo productions, he’s also one half of 2am/fm unit, alongside tadd mullinix (jtc / dabrye).
using a selection of hardware tools and analogue machines, his rugged sound draws on house, techno, acid, electro and hip hop and features crafty studio skills, knowing sampling and lovable raw aesthetics, defining his own sound that became known as jakbeat.
his latest offering for little beat different is, well, rather different in comparison to his usual club oriented output. it’s not as focused on straightforward dancefloor bangers, (although they are present here too), but features more experimental pieces, suitable for home listening purposes. totalling almost 38 minutes in length, this project has more of an album feel to it than a 12”.

label boss dodi palese is back on what ever not with a brand new chemtrails ep of 6 tracks including remixes from d’marc cantu (crème organization, m>o>s) & rising techno italian artist chevel (enklav, non series, stroboscopic artefacts). title track results as a sick combination of well randomized drum patterns, synths and abstract layers turned into a bouncing house interpretation by the mighty d’marc cantu. the electric shocks of dodis machines go all the way through ‘storm’ delivering a monster dub track which got also treatment by the eclectic and talented chevel, check his slow tempo doped beats to see what we are talking about. two additional luscious bonus tracks, barium and aluminum, complete the package. dodi palese brings the chemtrail conspiracy theory to the music dimension!

with this release, anne arbors jakbeat man delivers 6 minutes of electronic mania, a piece of repetitious, dance-inducing machine funk with a hook that hits you like a punch in the face with a velvet glove, brooding pads, and a top line like steel drums on acid. d marc cantu twists the sound of detroit techno and chicago house with his own visceral production style and makes it his own.

repress 2014 - next up in the 10 inch series on mos_deep another heavy 2-tracker of d marc cantu, which will be followed by a (mini)-album later this year. the opening track is a fierce chicago-styled banger kicking off with an extremely solid and frantic bassline while d marcs low-pitched voice asks us >how are we doing?<. the track slowly evolves into a deep and atmospheric masterpiece with spatial strings slowly expanding throughout the track.
>how are we doing?< is counter-balanced by the fragility and subtlety on the flipside. >a second earth< is a laid-back and emotional retro-futuristic techno track overflowing with sadness and melancholy, echoing the sounds of the artificial-intelligence era. like a lost vessel drifting through space this track captivates and terrifies at the same time. a beauty and a beast!

love notes from brooklyn offers up this platter from a very exciting new brooklyn artist, subtenant. as it says on the tin, the artisanal acid ep is heavy on the 303 squelches and emotional content. each track has a unique pairing of soul and heavy acid funk. evergeen soul is the clear lead track here, using a female snippet to keep this otherwise tough little number dancefloor friendly. this track is then reworked by detroit underground darling, d marc cantu, who pitches things up into funky rave territory. the flip side sees the title track feature the most soulful chords on the entire record, and then on the b2 the artist himself takes to the mic on know how it feels. this whole ep feels live and direct from the brooklyn underground.

following on from their hard hitting previous release quarantine , east london s phil passera & chieka ononye deliver their 4th release as payfone on new york s golf channel recordings. a side catholic central emerges from a dark street corner to bloom into a moody synth and bass heavy rhythm, before colliding with a disco riff that could have easily been borrowed from the master tapes of late 1970 s atlanta outfit brick. featuring the vocal style of argentinian pia gonzalez antar, who in confession recalls the dark dynamic of a relationship with a previous lover many years her senior. the room shaking b side comes courtesy of d marc cantu s haze mix that delivers a pounding late night electronic soul voyage. cantu has been releasing genre defying records since the late 2000 s, and performs as one third of jakbeat super group x2 alongside traxx & jtc.  golf channel every time !

finally a full ep by d marc cantu (1/2 of 2am/fm and under other aliases involved in collabos with traxx). technically its the follow up to his cult hit no control (creme jak 02, today a highly sought after 12inch) and in good h-h-h-house fashion this ep contains a ball busting jtc remix of this anthem. but the centre piece must be the title track one of the most emo-simplo jak trax weve ever heard here at the office. starting out simple enough with a single finger synth line (like the musings of a retarded secretary), it mutates into a big wailing distorted saxophone (or a mating whale, who knows?), this puppy will fill your room and throw everybody into an instant k-hole. hey, if that dont sound appealing check the soundclips for proof, its pure liberation... nay rebirth! more floor destroying crazyness on the flipside, but were all out of steam describing it. jak jak jak
