2021 repress - huge, the full unreleased version of the o.g bboy classic brazilian rhyme straight out the sony tape vaults ( i made that sound easier than it was). not just one for hip-hop heads, the appreciation of this groove is pretty much universal. the track is an uncredited cover of toninho horta s -beijo partido- most likely directly influenced by milton nascimentos version from the lp minas which is a great cheap lp while we are on that. on the flip for the first time on 45 (until someone tells me there is some random german or thai pressing) is one of my old modern spins, best 45 of the year and its only march.

just in time for summer, rnt drops a 3-tracker of tropical heat from brazilian outfit balako. although relative newcomers, their production prowess has been known to their rio de janeiro musical community and beyond for some time, and is on full display here. the a-side showcases their knack for modernizing the canonical brazilian mpb sound, from the deceptively demonic build of batuque, to the acidic-leaning lilt of deixa acontecer. the flip side takes a hard turn left of field with honey honey honey, a 9 minute opus of afro-brazilian disco insanity, primed for those balmy summertime roof parties.

some crate-digging compilations are often the result of someone hand-picking their choice favourites from another country’s musical history, perhaps unaware or uninvolved with its cultural lineage in the process. on this release - a treasure trove of synth jams, pop, samba boogie, balearic and electro from 1980 & ‘90s brazil - the tracks are picked by millos kaiser, one half of the brazilian duo selvagem, who are at the helm of throwing some of the country’s best dance parties. it’s a rare compilation that offers brazilian music actually picked by a brazilian.
this collection of sixteen tracks doesn’t comprise tracks scoured from deeply in-demand records, the rare sort that sell for eye-watering sums and that collectors spend years tracking down. they are the sort you’d find for a few quid should you come across but, as kaiser says, “the problem is finding them. they aren’t rare because everyone wants a copy but because no one wants them, not even the dealers.”

brazilian girls return in 2018 with let’s make love, their first album since 2008. formed in 2003, the group—sabina sciubba (lead vocals, electronics), jesse murphy (bass, vocals), didi gutman (keyboards, vocals), aaron johnston (drums, percussion, vocals)—was born after the four members crossed paths at east village club nublu. “somehow we all ended up at nublu on a sunday and it all came together,” says johnston. the band began playing nublu weekly, embracing a free-form ethos that helped shape their kaleidoscopic sound. “a lot of the spirit of the band comes from being so open to improvise like that,” says murphy. fast earning attention for their euphoric live show—and winning fans like zach galifianakis, who later cast sciubba as a regular on baskets—brazilian girls released their self-titled debut in 2005 and sophomore album talk to la bomb in 2006.

after a killer 12 inches from mori ra, jongno edits is back with two tunes, blurring the lines between editing and sampling. the a-side, 42 below, is an uplifting korean fusion boogie with slap bass, tropical synths, summery guitar and female vocals. given a serious dub work out by monsieur jongno. effortlessly working the bassline and guitar with added muscle, subtle dub fx s, drum fills, teasing the vocal and synths before unleashing the chorus and guitar solos. nice brazilian vibes on this one, like a lincoln olivetti production, seoul went rio. on the flip side, drums and a bass is an obscure lp cut from a korean percussion ensemble with traditional korean folk elements, tribal drums and chanting, spikey avant garde guitar plucks, rolling punk funk bassline that builds the energy levels with jazz style vocals and horns. sounding very liquid liquid, a bit can, a bit pig bag, with some korean craziness. expertly extended and re-arranged by the jongno edits main man to give it more of a dancefloor edge, and ramping up the psychedelics. powerful stuff.
