it was may 2017 when earthboogie’s debut release dropped on leng. the soundsystem-loving east london duo rightly won praise for a fine ep that brilliantly joined the dots between all things intergalactic, terrestrial and tribal. having spent the last ten months recording their adventures, izaak gray and nicola robinson return with “silken moon”, the first single from their forthcoming debut album, human call.

the superb forbidden planet is a shiny early electro cut with a great funk bass line, a real instrumental groove and fantastic melodies that shimmer like a hot sun. it s filled with joy and sounds as fresh today as ever, the way it ducks and dives and offers real warmth. the francisco remix keeps the funk vibe but changes the groove to be a more chicago house style cut. as such it has a rasping bassline, big drums and coarse percussion that make you want to jack. the masterful ali renault—a go-to disco and synth specialist who runs cyber dance records, human shield record company and most recently his own vivod imprint—then turns out a hypnotic version that is more driven and direct for the dance floor, with robotic bass and epic reflective synth lines. it s a cinematic track with great analogue textures that goes back to the future. the last original is the excellent stay with me , a cosmic love song with breezy trumpets and dreamy disco vibes as well as soulful vocals. italo melodies and infectious percussion finish it off and make it an instant crowd pleaser.

following the success of ‘ride’ with miss kittin, eminent sci+tec founder dubfire returns with another chaos-conjuring techno composition. previously the sole-preserve of his epic sense-blurring hybrid show, dubfire is finally unleashing ‘dust devil’… his first solo release in several years, ‘dust devil’ is all about precision momentum. a move that dubfire’s made his signature, you can physically feel movement and destination throughout. especially as we reach the short breakdown where the riff revolves faster and higher, providing space for the echoed stabs that whirl and twist around you intensely. as the drums re-ignite, the riff is suddenly converted into groove energy as the jack-minded persistence brings the elements back together with pure focus. this is what ali has to say… “this was an instrumental i had done that i wasn’t quite sure what to do with. it wasn’t strong enough for a lead single and it always felt as though there was something missing, perhaps a spoken or sung vocal. so i sort of put it out of my mind until it was time to compile the music for the hybrid show back in the summer of 2013. once i had the backbone of the set list, along with the visual look, there seemed to be a more defined mood and look. and when i happened upon this track again it seemed to have been tailor-made for this show. it was also nice to insert something no one had heard before to break things up a bit.

ali renault s ever on-point vivod label welcomes uk techno stalwart tobias schmidt to the table for a return to a time when techno could be slamming, witty and downright fun at the same time. higher is loaded with funk, riding some kind of bassy lick with tightly wound drums and off-kilter synth warbles, but then -glass walls- ramps up the madness with a lead line that will stop people in their tracks before making them freak out with gusto. -pink milk- shows no let up in the energy, although the parping trumpet lines that lead the track give everything a jaunty, upbeat feel compared to the darkness of the a side. play people is a true tribute to the wonky techno scene schmidt came up with, all skronky swing and lopsided synths for all the true techno freaks out there.

claude debussy (+1918) was one of the most popular and forward thinking composer associated with impressionist music. his innovative and at this time new way to compose music with non traditional scales and chromaticism inspired countless artists from the likes of steve reich, philip glass, miles davis and herbie hancock. remarkable attributes of his music were i.e. the usage of parallel chords, bitonality and many compositions of whole-tone and pentatonic scales and all this surely reminds us on contemporary electronic music where you hardly find limits or boundaries when it comes to traditional, harmonic sounding scale tone music. after studying countless composers of the last centuries marc romboy decided to accept the challenge to edit, remix and reconstruct several works of his favorite french composer, ranging from „la mer“ to -prélude à l après-midi d un faune“. romboy: „one sentence of debussy impressed me a lot when he said that he simply intents to write new sounding music. this is and has been exactly my goal, to create kind of unheard sounds“. on the album romboy performs together with the dortmund philharmonic orchestra, the renowned conductor ingo-martin stadtmüller, the well respected düsseldorf based concert master miki kekenj and sound programmer ali khalaj. the recordings was directed december 12th 2016. it s the first live recording ever released on an album where electronic sounds and classical components were merged in such manner.

the second release of girasole records is made by daniele temperilli. he released before on slapfunk records, quality vibe records, mlh and kakudo records. now on his own imprint girasole records with 4 housecuts. a1 is starting deep with a slower vibe. a2 is more energetic, but still has that lazy vibe. the b-side is more rough. b1 is a straight going track with a profound twist. b2 is the most rough and energetic tooltrack of the ep.

despite a discography that stretches right back to the late noughties, little is known about turkish producer ali kuru. perhaps he’s publicity shy, or simply wants to let his music do the talking, either way, the music he makes is magical, and undoubtedly worthy of wider acclaim.

having originally surfaced on creme organization back in 2002, luke eargoggle and ronnie johansson s monkeyshop project is an intermittent treat that offers the best of warm synth-led electronic disco. on their second outing for ali renault s vivod label (after the excellent escape from the mental zoo ep in 2014) the pair bring yet more of that addictive, utopian dance magic on this new record. -island of love- is indeed a romantic club burner with smatterings of vintage synth pop in its bones, while -heartbreak- takes a more overtly italo direction and sounds just as strong with it. obergman then takes -island of love- to task with a respectful remix that shines a few different synth lines and beat patterns through the same fuzzy prism.

friends & relations is a freshly minted imprint based in peckham, a neighbourhood that has gone from run-down dump to hipster haven in the space of a few short years. the label s first missive comes from its founder and proud peckham-dweller, ali nebraska gibbs, a producer best known for his missives on rush hour and mister saturday night. it s a predictably strong release, with both -stop playing with my heart- and -keep what ya got- showcasing gibbs skill for turning rubbery disco and soul gems into tasty, club-ready house cuts. he s particularly good at teasing out tracks via judicious use of sampled loops, as the deeper and smokier closer, -rat boogie-, deftly proves.
