after the striking debut release on nothing odd recordings found label owner sam smith sitting comfortably alongside baby ford for an exploration of subliminal house and techno, nor002 finds smith donning the alias monty the fly and expanding on his own vision for stripped-down dance music brimming with psychoactive tendencies. across the three tracks there is a diverse range of moods being drawn on, from the meditative to the mechanical, all fused together by what some might consider an obsessive eye for detail. there s meditation in the air in places, with mysterious pads and heavy splashes of reverb soaking out into some corners in the time-honoured dubwise spirit of transcendental electronic music. elsewhere brushed percussion and disembodied vocals shape out a more sinister message, lending themselves to a sound world both immersive and disorientating in one fell swoop.

the debut release on office recordings is the first part of a series produced by label founder baaz. in my mind is a subtle, shiny piece of jazzyfied house music with a steady rolling groove and dirty kickdrum. glim bangs the box with deep dubs and a sexy vigorous groove. the flip starts with two mind bending downbeat cuts with a stumbling beat. last but not least a slowburning remix of way out citti by matthias reiling (sessionn victim, giegling recordings) and björn astrup who did a brilliant job twisting the original into a soulful homage to the slow side of house music.

opening up with the deep space atmospherics of quiet life the album immediately transports you to another world. the title track is then a melodically lush and uplifting affair with curious synth patterns ebbing and flowing beneath crisp percussion. tracks like we search for answers combine organic, wooden textures with more synthetic and trippy synth sounds that are as far away from your standard sample packs as can be imagined. across the course of the album there are dark, moody and emotive pieces like worship (previously released in extended form on the mdl02 single) featuring qzen who reads a poem by patience agbabi in tantalising fashion as well as heavyweight, dubbed out techno groovers like shadow theory. make it true (of which seth troxler will be releasing an extended edit on his play it say it label, complete with high profile remixes) is another great collab featuring the vocals of jojo de freq, and the track itself is a harmonious, radiant house jam that is humid and human in equal measure. the otherworldly, snaking feel free again showcases berkson & what s ability to coax alluring emotions out of their machines and closer logan five wraps things up in suitably spangled, textural fashion. despite the fact much of this album will work on a dancefloor in the hands of the right dj, there s an invention and musicality to it that renders the whole thing hugely listenable away from the club. a testament to berkson & what s analogue invention and fluid ideas, keep up appearances really is a master electronic oeuvre.

glorious and epic two tracker vinyl for bosconi records, this time by our favourite detroit techno duo the oliverwho factory. we used to be big fans of their madd chaise works and latest rush hour and planet e were awesome, but that percussive sound was different from what we knew from their past. we wanted them to give another chance to their more jacked out musical side in memory of the two masterpieces (and bosconi soundsytem favourite waxes) those were >the rhythm< and >the rain 5th wave<, and so we proudly got another timeless, soulfull, spacey and futuristic techno anthem called >take me away< darryl with his magic hands has created an ultra effective combination of energetic and groovy pumpin kick with a tight funky bassline substaining an upbuilding layers of dreamy synths and stormy noises while the voice of lashone gives that unique colour and atmosphere to the track that all the oliverwho fans love, dictating their original trademark sound. on the flip, takin inspiration from tama sumo panorama bar mix samplin the ow, we got an upbeat version of their slowmotion gem called >together<, that this time, thanks to altered states re touch of darryl and shone has become a proper and fat techno arena bomb, now just for the pleasure of absolutely everybody. you wont miss it, for sure

two deep jams with a dashing black & white mystique around them. check the b-side: late night club appeal! what it felt like to be so wanted, so adored. no one had ever felt like that about me. it was all so dramatic. always in the wee small hours when it seemed to me that the world was ours - that we were the world.

the title track reveals a deeper and more contemplative mood for 2014, with a pensive piano loop, a dark-toned deep house swing, and a vocal sample that speaks to the experiences of the disenfranchised. chris lattner s remix of the same provides a punchier and more dramatic rhythm track for maximum impact and a more urgent effect. b-side production -morning poem- harnesses the power spoken dialogue again, with a big flter of distortion, and wispy, whirring deep tech sounds tha testablish a late night feel.

there are things in life which are suitable and things in life which aren t suitable. the things which are suitable should be ignored and left for those who enjoyed being tucked into bed and being walked across the street with their hands being held. the things which aren t suitable are what you will probably have some fun with despite the bumps and bruises suffered as a result. the suitable nature of the unsuitability of the following cheek full of tongue provided by scott robinson, ben pest, nox, and norman mueller will hopefully not cause any permanent damage along the way.

massive two tracker from jonny miller on his 2nd edits release on kat.what you did is quite simply a whopper! disco music as god intended it - arms aloft, eyes shut, inhibitions nowhere to be seen, smiles bigger than life itself. what we have here is not an edit as such but a reworking of chaka khans what you did, subtly housed up, re-arranged, chopped, fil-tered and re-mastered within an inch of its life - chaka herself pretty much always sounds in-credible but here the vocal just seems to stand even taller than usual. on the other side we have something in which some of our slightly older party folk may well recognise. dionnes house classic from 88 gets the full edit treatment and the timing on this just seems so right. originally released on the ace bigshot label out of canada (and was just huge in the hacienda), re-mastered, stretched out, re-arranged and making the most out of all those old school stabs, ploddy bass lines and timeless vocals.

modelmaker is a new london label from the collective minds of dan berkson and james what. the esteemed house duo has long been garnishing a range of international imprints with their inventive analogue house and techno sounds, but now they are focussing on their own outlet. initially launching with a couple of self penned eps, release number three will be the pair s long-time-in-the-making debut album, and after that a considered selection of other talents will join the ranks as the label pushes on. always primarily focussed on machine made, texturally rich house and techno, each release will come with unique artwork based on works from whats great grandfather, conrad felixmuller, who was a well known german expressionist.

after taking a short break house of disco records are back with a purpose. not content with the adding to the plethora of disco edit labels representing the genre they have opted to walk a more distinct path, determined to lean on originals or clever sampling as opposed to outright re-rubs. in this their twelfth release they recruit previous label-mate harry wolfman and compadre skinny love to provide three stunning dancefloor ready originals. the duo have certainly delivered on the brief and turned in three diverse and clever takes on what a modern disco track with a house soul can represent. on remix duties they have recruited a promising young producer kickflip mike, who has released on box aus holz as joschka seibt and paired him with experienced disco merchant the revenge who is responsible for some of the best remixes we know of, and he doesnt disappoint here with either remix.

producer and boss of mathematics records, jamal moss a.k.a hieroglyphic being is a one-off musical explorer. jamals music takes cues from the ebm and house that played a huge part in the city s musical underground in the late eighties and early nineties, notably ron hardy and adonis, but also industrial, avant-jazz and noise. his tireless schedule of rough low-key releases over the last 12 years and his intense, very physical, psychedelic music, have made him a key exponent or maybe even a pioneer of what has recently come to be named outsider house, although he prefers the more sun-ra like descriptors of rhythmic cubism and cosmic be-bop.

for more than ten years soul jazz records have been exploring and documenting the sound of new orleans funk. now we turn their attention to the flipside of this musical coin - new orleans soul. these two musical forms share a lineage that begins with the citys enormous rhythm and blues explosion in the post-war 1940s and 1950s. new orleans soul incorporated the soulful vocals of the gospel church, the driving beat of rhythm and blues, as well as traces of the second-line parade bands and the latinized rhythms of the city. this album tells the story of new orleans soul and comes complete with extensive sleevenotes, exclusive photography, supreme sound quality and comes as super-heavy, super-loud limited-edition double vinyl album + download code.

the original, with a well-constructed bassline incorporates a warm up melody that begins to set the tone for the night ahead. each layer is distinct as the track begins to build itself right to its crescendo when each of those individual layers collectively come together. you can distinctly hear the 80 s like synths that are cleverly inserted into the track which are highlighted by the female vocal samples. the grittier elements add a touch of darkness and instantly transport you to a warehouse club with an intimate atmosphere. the remix, done by the widely loved tech-house duo pleasurekraft jack up the tempo a notch, and add a bouncy groove to the track. where the original brought out a darker side, the remix is more upbeat and settles in well for a peak hour set. bringing that crisp bassline to the fore, and tuning out the melodies to make them a tad subtler it showcases a more tech-house version of the original. there s an added element a slightly more haunted vibe which is coupled together with those gritty and harder elements. all i can conclude is what a tech-house bomb this is from the highly talented pleasurekraft. they always manage to bring something new and unique to every single track they ve ever remixed which truly shows their remarkability as consistently good producers.

what happens if such restless souls like akiko kiyama and laurine frost start to melt their sounds together? the result is that one of the most interesting piece of art of the forward-thinking techno music becomes alive. ’through the mountains ep’ is a golden section of their utopistic musical imaginations, influenced by classical minimalism, live instruments and the ordered chaos of contemporary techno and found sound elements. all the four tracks contain their recognisable fingerprints. the gently and respectful collaboration is proven by the perfect balance of chemistry. in the collage of their musical layers every tiny sound and every tiny breaks have its own weight and meaning. waving and playful structures, exciting journeys on the edge of reality.
