another very fine release in asthmatic kitty s library catalog music series, this album comes from william ryan fritch, a prolific film composer, sound recordist and multi-instrumentalist from oakland, ca. fittingly, music for honey and bile takes on the character of a cinematic score, collecting a number of varied instrumentals that show an incredible range to fritch s diverse talents. in addition to the composition and production, fritch performs virtually everything on the album, playing piano, guitars, violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, sax, trumpet, marimba, vibraphone and dulcimer to name but a relative few. this is seriously impressive stuff, and chamber pieces such as too anxious to dream , shadows like despondent ghosts and tongues that chatter like pigeons sound like the work of a large ensemble rather than just one man. the variety exhibited on the album is breathtaking too, switching between large-scale productions complete with multilayered strings and percussion to more intimate pieces like eggshells and the manipulated piano drone minimalism of chewed their nails to caustic red pads .

hugo capablanca may be best known for his more disco-minded output from his time on gomma records, but increasingly his scattered output and his label have been reaching towards more abrasive material. nothing will prepare you for the confrontational nature of this daring, no label transmission. the artwork alone is enough to challenge the senses, while the opening track is a metallic drone that gives way to the distended mutant beats of top less. guy debord is no less cut throat in delivering a disco punish remix of lap dance on the b side, all deconstructed groove and guttural noise, and then dance less rounds the record off with another excursion into unsettling, heavily processed noise.

britischer folk-troubadour richard dawson legt neues album peasant vor! der gitarrist und sänger richard dawson genießt bei sich zuhause in newcastle legendenstatus im bereich des progressiven folk. ende 2014 legte er mit seinem ersten domino-album nothing important ein inbrünstiges mammut-werk vor (4 songs, 45min laufzeit). hörer dieses albums verstanden schnell, dass der scheinbar schüchterne titel nur mit einem großen augenzwinkern zu verstehen sei. das spex-magazin ernannte nothing important kurzerhand zum album der ausgabe (nov 2014). man dachte, dawson könne dieses musikalische statement schwerlich toppen. auf seinem neuen album peasant beweist er das gegenteil. aus bipolaren song dekonstruktionen wurden folk-bronzen ganz neuer qualität (ogre). seine minimalistische wucht wurde mit fast biblischen chören aufgestockt (weaver). und die atonalität ist mit hilfe von so imposanten wie feinfühligen arrangements in richtung geschmeidigkeit verschoben (beggar). die epischen songs mit Überlänge aber sind aus dawsons song-universum natürlich auch auf peasant nicht wegzudenken (masseuse). es wäre falsch zu behaupten, dawson hätte an schrulligkeit und scharfen kanten verloren. die wird man ihm nie austreiben können. peasant jedoch wird eine neue welle von dawson-anhängern mit sich bringen. er ist und bleibt ein britischer troubadour, wie es ihn nur einmal gibt.
