repress 2018 - it is not a secret anymore that manchester has been a deephouse capital city since quite a while. the meandyou. party series is the main spot here with resident djs juniper & arnaldo amongst others spinning alongside their favourite acts like lowtec (whose track on smallville 14 was already a homage called meandyou.dub), jus-ed, dj qu, kassem mosse, move d and the smallville posse. for our catalogue number 30, juniper & arnaldo are delivering four house tracks from outta space, that fit perfectly into the smallville vein. the global village of sweet house music is rising.

house heaven on 12-inch. a lofty description, but one that fits most excellent unlimited’s latest offering perfectly. in 1990, boy george and simon rogers (the fall) made a record called “generations of love” for george’s post-culture club project, jesus loves you. legendary nyc dj and producer bruce forest was one of several big names brought in to do a set of remixes, and the better days veteran got to work on several contrasting versions of the cut. the mixes heard here, done at london’s famed olympic studios, are slices of utter ecstasy for anyone who has a taste for ‘90s deep house euphoria and ambient dancefloor excursions, but were unfortunately lost amongst the countless alternate mixes. suffice to say, meu is taking matters into our own hands and has remastered and properly packaged these tracks, directly sourced from forest himself, with the full intention to give this erstwhile dollar-record the respect it deserves. the jazz mix opens with a winding piano solo by andy whitmore (spandau ballet, terence trent d’arby, soul ii soul) that lures the listener into a hypnotic groove that could quite comfortably go on forever but here is constrained by our modesty and the 12-inch format. (a tip for the adventurous dj: flipped to 33rpm the tune becomes an epic balearic chugger, a late-night psylocibic alternative for the heads.) the synth-heavy sounds of the ambient mix on the flip side harken back to the chill-out rooms of the ‘90s but twenty-some years later bring the best kind of vintage charm.

swiss artist and veteran producer ripperton contacted the esp institute out of the blue mid-2017 to share a gorgeous mix of self-produced material, a collection of pieces made without any agenda outside of representing the self, not geared toward the dancefloor or a specific environment but simply a bi-product of introspective exploration. we were floored, the mix was on constant repeat in our world for weeks, then was subsequently pulled apart into separate titles to form this beautiful double lp, ripperton’s debut with the label. the title sight seeing speaks of someone stepping outside their current reality to look in the mirror, as if to ground themselves and keep sight of who they are in a world of extreme highs and lows. inspired greatly by expansive landscapes and views from airplane windows (imagine your commute flying over the alps every weekend), ripperton describes this collection as postcards to himself, messages from his subconscious recorded on tape (both conceptually and literally), melancholy soundtracks to the mondays that follow weekend journeys. while musical genres tend to cycle through bandwagon moments, the esp institute strives to operate independently of these, and while sight seeing is undoubtably an ambient album, we’re simply proud to revel in the chance moment where an esteemed artist such as ripperton spreads his wings in a beautifully unexpected mode of expression.

the b side is an amazing track from seawind that everybody who is into jazz funk or latin jazz with vocals will dig it. this version is different than the original, we kept only the more dancefloor friendly parts and we extended the beginning and end of the track with only drum rhythmic reprogrammed for mixing easily in your sets with other tunes. please enjoy as much as we do because we love those edits, we love those tunes, we love music we are very happy with this release because its really really good!

mondo groove celebrates italo-disco in fine style delighting us with the most important tunes from the legendary phantom records a ride deep into the world of the label that has not only produced renowned music, but has been acknowledged as a serious influence on modern disco sounds. emerging in the late 70s to early 80s, italo bridged the gap between disco and house, and was a staple of seminal chicago djs like frankie knuckles (who pioneered many of the drum machines and synths that are still in use today). i-robots, a true connoisseur of the genre, hailing from the piedmont area of italy, curated and carefully selected the tracks on this compilation. this eleven track collection features originals and rarities, officially repressed here for the first time, and 2 tracks re-edited by i-robots. the lp comes with the original phantom records logo on the front, scans of original 7-inch and lps covers, as well as photos of the era on the back.

voda (water) the second part of his trilogy sees aleksei nikitin delving deep into baltic seas. coming up again with chilled flows of acid on vdaleke, the bubbly yet driving thump of subaqueous place-holder, then he goes diving even further on the flip, cruising through underwater caves filled with ten-tacles of twisted, seductive electro, gnarly acid-techno, before finally emerging in iskatel, ears still ringing with harmonies of shredded beauty.

zemlya (earth), the final installment of nocows three-part ep-series for figure unearths the artist‘s maybe most drastic work to date. while opener libbi still sprouts gently into crystalline arteries of ambiance, the incessant arps of synchronicity loom ominously. equally challenging, yet offering conciliation in form of string-led soothing is rave button, after which the record finds closure in the seemingly open-ended sound spiral of troubles will be miles away.

tt05 is brought by st. joseph, an excellent dj and producer from cologne. the ep is split into two very different types of sounds, one presents a more rolling techno type of sound and the other, more mellow vibes.

halvtrak has gathered a following. the previous releases by the finn on dont be afraid and bakk teased an appetite among techno heads for his detroit infused and texturised sound and unexpected grooves. moving towards warmer tones, his latest output on a new london/helsinki label cold blow enters him further into detroits past. as an unexpected treat, the title track has been re-imagined by the very special chinaski with his trademark ghoul sound so reminiscent of old horror films now blended with sharp electro and ebm vibe. chinaski has been busy of late with a berghain live set as well as his fine rivers end ep on uncanny valley and ghost rider on live at robert johnson. from relentless groove to darker places, this is halvtraks most refined release yet as he becomes an illuminator of his own ascent.

ant orange’s third 12&#8243, for karaoke kalk forms something resembling a trilogy for the label. “right there” is built on a familiar rhodes-n-bass aesthetic, combining the lo-fi jazz of 2017’s “arkupe” with the soulful vocal motifs of 2015’s “s/t”, while introducing more electronic ingredients and taking an increasingly exploratory approach to rhythm and composition. the opening title track clocks in at over 8 minutes, growing slowly from soft tickled keys to a full-bodied groove circled by airy synths and fragmented rnb vocals. “drunk in the trunk” then shifts down a gear, looping another vocal cut over a lazy, stripped-back wahwah vibe. side a closes with experimental jazz skit “let that sink in”, its jerky tempo and flashes of light reminiscent of a late-night subway ride. the b-side takes a more contemplative tone, with the meditative arpeggios and sparse drums of “comfort zone” leading into the dusky west coast stroll of “muscle beach”, before “rudis goes offline” picks up the tempo for a last shimmering dance. the closing track “a frozen lake” sounds just like it sounds – chilled by name and by nature.

the solar phenomena label welcomes achim maerz for its fifth ep. the hamburg producer is an associate of labels like don’t be afraid, where last year he released his mini-album of rough and ready house tracks that are improvised and innovative. the four cuts he serves up here are just as special and have an ethereal air to them.
in my house opens things up with serene synth work and lush detroit stylings. it’s a deep and widescreen track that encourages you to dream. fresh air is a little more upright, with rattling hits and pixelated, long tailed synths lingering above the rooted drums. as the title suggests, leaving this planet is a cosmic exploration, with ambient keys and meditative atmospheres joined by only the most subtle and suggestive sense of rhythm way down below. last of all is two times, a beautiful deep house track with deft synths drifting, bleeding and wandering off into a starry night sky. all in all, then, these are truly thoughtful house tracks.

neil landstrumm and tobias schmidt are two men responsible for modern day electronic music. when the sound crawled out of the primordial speaker, this pair were there to welcome it. for more than twenty years the two have worked together as sugar experiment station and arrive on shipwrec for their first collaboration in eight years. this is a 12- born in burning furnaces of bass. moulded in those low frequency fires, smelted in the thumping heat, are beats, beats hardened like steel before being shaped into lancing points. with these tools of rhythmic brimstone ses goes about destroying dancefloors before reinventing them. chords are rolled in gravel, doused in distortion and rinsed in static. a style forged from the friction of pistons, the sweat of the assembly line, before being dipped in a searing liquor of circuitboards and molten microchips. ses - sugar experiment station - shattering every stereotype.

for the past 15 years the tanzanian megalopolis of dar es salaam has had one of the most exciting underground electronic music scenes in east africa. a constellation of micro-scenes from mchiriku, sebene and segere all the way to its latest mutation of singeli that finally after years of lurking in the underground has exploded into the mainstream and taken over bongo flava as the music of choice amongst tanzania s youth. born in the sprawling working class neighborhoods of tandale and manzese, singeli s signature sound consists of fast paced frantic loops interlocking with each other, with influences from zanzibars tarab music all the way to south african afro-house coupled with mc s who often spit satirical lyrics about the challenges facing tanzania s youth, from police corruption to the complications of dating girls when you are broke. if there is one studio that stands out amongst the hundreds that dot dar es salaam s musical landscape it is sisso records. centered around producers, bwax, sisso, bampa pana and yung keyz morento and mc s dogo niga and makavelli, they were early pioneers of the singeli sound. whilst some singeli artists have begun fusing their music with more traditional tanzanian hip hop, sisso have remained uncompromising in their sound, always raw, fast with a punk diy aesthetic that can at times verge on noise and gabber, to produce a spell binding music that is like no other sound system culture in the region.

having been steadily absorbing the flowery humidity in steamy spa towns of central florida since his debut outing chillax, floridian $1 house music purveyor blair sound design aka kyle lyon emerges into the lobster forest with all 16-bit brass and duvet filters blazing. taking inspiration from late 80’s and early 90’s bargain bin finds, as well as a lifetime spent strapped to game boy classic kirby’s dream land, “console humidity” finds lyon on classically chipper yet introspective form, carving a path well trodden but that is unmistakeable his own.

warren harris did a sterling job on his first outing for perpetual rhythms as hanna, and he s back for round two. things are just as deep as you would hope and expect, with harris unique take on the detroit house formula present and correct on the cleverly executed -lake shore dr.- -parallel- finds him exploring his penchant for snagged, off-kilter rhythms matched with deep house delicacy, and -gold coast- takes things into lounge territory without ever sounding insipid. therein lies the magic of hanna, and beautiful experiment -khords 1- is on hand to finish the ep off as a statement of just how special and unique harris music is.

odd music s stroboscope 006 motions into rotation after a long awaited period. once again odd give us some insight into their creative genius with a three piece of shifty neo-noir dubs. forty-five, thirty three & a third and nine come to life with dark melodies and crisp jazzy percussion amidst a set of chromatic synth progressions. each track rolls seamlessly into the other, but with their own definition in the collection. soon to be available, this release is another great edition in the odd music discography.-

after his appearance on born free records, rollerboys recordings, and rett i fletta, johannes wilkstrom aka yourhighness contributes to cocktail d amore music with stratofortress. the berlin based imprint gathered techno guru rrose, born free records owner samo dj, and international japanese wave representative gonno, to offer an ep with a wide range of interpretations of the title track. the original mix is an acid based, industrial influenced techno banger. highly energetic, for sweaty late-night dance floors. on the same side samo dj transforms the techno blaster into a funky ebm ballad, characterized by a deep male voice and a breakbeat groove. rrose is on remix duty on the b-side. stratofortress suddenly turns into a dubby, everlasting build up, that eventually implodes in the depth of a black hole. closing the ep gonno offers a slow-mo rework. deep and very cinematic, this remix will please every cosmic hole connaisseur.

the next chapter in shaw cuts comes from russian duo poima, who celebrate their debut record twin blades of doom – a fierce revenge mission and hunt after the infamous ghost gang. the pursuit opens with triglau , its linear machine groove levelling a fraction of the ghost gang. heads roll on a crimson floor. teaming up with mysterious masked warrior inland, triglau morphs into a hypnotic trip. pushing drum rhythms and swirling pads combine with nasty noise elements, propelling the hunt. the remaining enemy members are already hatching their next evil move. on the way to lu he village where the ghost gang plans its next assault, analogue break-beat punches and swinging percussions weave a menacing tapestry of sound, crushing the bones of rogue creatures in its path. serbian slayer regen arrives in force for the final showdown at qi dou town where the ghost gang plans a huge heist. armed with atmospheric pads and a soaring drum crescendo, his interpretation of bones ends the ghost gang tyranny in one fatal sweep. and the saga goes on...

portuguese artist ka§par gives parisian label escapade its third release. the four tracks span across a wide range of electronic sounds, telling a story that calls on many emotions. ‘wail of a loon opens the record with an experimental atmosphere. after this laid back introduction, ka§par goes into a much stronger style: ‘riggeds energy and catchy, twirling melody make it a total banger. on the b side, the mood gets much warmer and groovy. ‘vital is the perfect tune to warm up a dancefloor, thanks to a swinging rhythm, mesmerizing vocal samples and funky synth lines. ‘alma douro rounds up the record with strong jazzy vibes. beautiful chords and piano solos never dissapoint!

a quartet of heavy reworks. reginald omas mamode iv truly does what he does best, bringing a percussive, low-slung funk to one of the most ethereal and beautiful pieces of soul on the album, sunshine. glenn astro, elevates bossa b to a jostling, bouncing shuffler that eventually turns around and heads skyward with uplifting chords and irresistible bass. deoke heads into the darker regions of the original for his hugely loved remix of bossa b. the bass on this one is ridiculous and has caused damage to a couple of sound systems were aware of (genuinely). finally the ever exceptional mr beatnick simply took the stereo track for kalimba 2 and edited it into a mind-opening dub. handling bass and harmonics as only he can, a true highlight of this high quality remix package.

job sifre is one of the guys bringing new blood into the amsterdam scene. this is the follow-up to his recently released debut on the new artifical space label, where he continues his path of solid ebm fueled electronix. the record ends with the gorgeous at least we try, showing of his more tripping, rhythmic side. beautiful complementary artwork by stefan unkovic.
