erste ep des italieners musumeci für diynamic nach seinen beiden remixes für das label in 2015 und 2016. sowie zahlreichen releases auf aeon. bedrock. connaisseur. compost black label. my favorite robot und off recordings. die inspiration zum titeltrack lieferte ein dystopisches instrument namens penfield mood organ aus der sci-fi-novelle “do androids dream of electric sheep”.
the penultimate release on optimo trax (at least for now) comes from tel aviv’s mighty kalbata. i was already a big fan and was so delighted when he got in touch to see if i would be interested in releasing something by him. unusually for optimo trax this is one track in 3 versions but each version is so different that often i play them all in one dj set. originally there were two versions but as kalbata is a renowned master of dub (check out the documentary online about him recording in jamaica). i gently persuaded him to do a no-holds-barred dub mix too which appears here as enkuan pt 3. a few words about the record from kalbata – i went to ethiopia in the beginning of 2017 to record musicians. the most memorable one was mulugeta teshome who plays the washint flute on this record. it’s a traditional ethiopian flute made out of wood. and mulugeta came to the studio carrying a whole bag of them. each one in a different key. we chose the scale and started the recording session. i ended up taking the tracks a lot further with the three cuts on the record but really it all started that day. in a small studio shack in addis ababa.

let your brain slowly melt to the delightful sounds of dima disk. having first heard their music via the palace x bronze skate video a year or so ago. we did a bit of digging and it turned out to be by a duo called dima disk. one half of whom was an old glasgow pal called ragnar and robert nikolajev from tallinn s legendary club lekker. you may have heard their recent ripper on porridge bullet. having been fans of the shit coming out of estonia for a good few years and also having a thing for releasing music from our glasgow connections we felt that this needed to come out as a rad 12-.
ike yard recombine their music looking across decades of post punk. electronic. soundtracks and come out with some of their best yet and enough to last the next 20-30 years (in ike yard s very own words). originally founded in 1979 new york city. members michael diekmann (keyboard. guitar. vocals). kenneth compton (programming drums. synths arrangements. bass. guitar. vocals) and stuart argabright (programming drums. synths arrangements. distortion bass. keyboards. metal perc) reformed the band once in 2007 and again in 2010. each time different and with new ambitions. this time ‘sacred machine’ ep is defined by detailed drum layers supported by multiple basses and keyboards. some off-timing beat patterns that turn in a second of synchrony into a straight four on the floor kick and first time vocal collaborations.

sonic groove’s latest high octane addition to the roster is berlin based british artist rebekah. rebekah has led a successful artist and dj career in the techno scene over the past five years with releases on the prolific clr and soma imprints as well as her own labels elements and decoy. her soma album from a few months ago entitled “fear paralysis” shows her artistic skills of having a wide range of flexibility as she weaved through many styles of techno from deep to hard.
taking her artistry into further realms of sound construction. rebekah ventures into a much harder industrial techno terrain with her latest four cut release entitled “into the black”. designed specifically with sonic groove in mind. “loose mechanics” & “conquest” are ferocious industrialized peak time techno pulverizers that will turn stone into dust.
“into the black” is an advant garde broken beat track with a pitch shifting. hauntingly dissonant string drone would be the perfect score for a sci-fi horror flick while “war cry” turns the blackness into a lighter shade of grey with it’s complexly designed chord driven emotions layered over a very intricately programmed drum rhythm.

eric maltz is a producer from new york city and now resides in berlin. germany. he is a former employee of halcyon records from its og glory days in it s first location in red hook/carrol gardens areas of brooklyn. -eric provided a sofa to me often through-ought my 20 s and vice-versa. we both cared about music above all else- we lived and breathed music- and we helped each other survive when we were penniless - if one was up. so was the other... eric and i were roommates. friends. we looked out for each other in a rough city with tough rules. every time one of us got a job at a restaurant or record shop. within weeks we would have the other working there too. we did that for a decade. we slang records for years at halcyon- a shop on smith street which had a portrait of stevie wonder painted on the front facade- and we threw parties all around brooklyn back then too.. every shitty bar that would have us lol. we were a dope team. he s the only person who has ever touched the third rail on a subway and survived too! true story. so you know i couldn t wait to release his debut lp. proud of this guy- - levon vincent

dasha is back on sonic groove for her first outing on the label in six years. in this time elapsed dasha has released just two dance singles both some years ago. her last musical outing in 2015. is the stunning masterpiece experimental listening album entitled -sleepstep- on raster noton. now finally after a quite long hiatus from releasing dance music. dasha returns with -ain t no god nor king-. a four song extended play release . this deep minded. beat driven journey starts off with -katusha- a hard minimalistic. mesmerizing affair with strong delay effects on the kick drum forging a subconscious state of time and space as it echoes it way through mountainous canyons far away from civilization. next up is -dystopian drive-. a percussive song which brings an atmosphere of doom and gloom full on. with a gritty & stringent ebm bassline and tripped out layered acidic effects riding the thick bass waves. -black swan- takes it a few steps further into even darker dismal territories. a nearly nine minute journey which is a fitting sound track for surveilling a haunting post nuclear apocalypse scene from up above. -acid melancholy- is a 303 tweaked ambient sound sculpture with a metronomic pendulum rhythmic perc swinging back and forth which signals that time has run its course and the end is near.

best works records label-owner andré lodemann is back with a new long-awaited ep on his imprint. it is the 20th release on the label. for this “birth” ep andré personally enlisted non-other than swiss duo adriatique for their remix skills aswell as new-comer producer fabian dikof. andré’s track “birth” creates contrasts using african-drumming inspired styles paired with techy-beat pro-gramming. starting more on a minimal tip the track works its self up to high-tension climaxing with an emotional break keeping the deeper moments intact. adriatique created a faster more club-orientated ver-sion paring the more hooky parts of the original with beat-sythn elements giving the track a more tribal feel. the second remix featured here come’s via fabian dikof the second main artist on best works records. it s great to have him remix andré lodemann at last presenting his masterful skills. fabian took a different path in his remix working more on the melodic hook but also creating a warm bass-laden soundscape that loves the dance-floor in its own right.
