the boundary-pushing colombian group returns to soundway records with another unique album: dreamy psych-folk. blending traditional latin rock with tropicalia. and lush string and choral arrangements. meridian brothers’ sound is a huge palette of influences and inspirations. drawing from traditional latin rock (including colombian. argentinian and mexican) as well as brazilian tropicalia. for this album alvarez incorporates string instruments - in particular the cello. both bowed and plucked - a timbre rarely used in his previous works.
some of the coolest work we’ve ever heard from moraes moreira – a really unique hybrid of styles that includes samba soul. jazzy funk. and other brazilian modes from the 70s – all wrapped up into a beautifully fresh and personal approach! the 70s all wrapped up into a beautifully fresh and personal approach!
we’ve always loved their records. but this time around there’s something maybe even more incredible - this instant classic vibe that rings out right from the very first note. as the voices of the singers trade back and forth. and blend - and the instrumentation follows suit with this subtle weaving of acoustic and electric elements. remastered reissue on 180 gram vinyl.
born in argentina. saxophonist and flutist hector “costita” bisignani arrived to brazil in the late 1950s and in the following years played with some of the biggest names of the era such as joão donato. manfredo fest and sérgio mendes. . in 1964 he recorded “impacto” with his sextet. an explosive mix of tough jazz and brazilian samba widely considered his best work. the album’s ten tracks include three costita compositions. songs by tom jobim and vinícius de moraes and a superb version of horace silver’s ‘tokyo blues’. a killer samba-jazz lp! presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180g vinyl.
spare and jazzy samba work from the team of paulinho da viola and elton medeiros - a beautiful illustration of the genre at its simple best - carried off with no pretension and a wonderful sense of grace! remastered reissue on 180 gram vinyl.
3 of brazil s most important artists of the past 10 years team up in this tribalistas project – a genre-blurring set of tracks that recalls similar efforts of the tropicalista generation. updated to reflect the styles of the 3 artists involved. with some nice complicated production touches from monte herself. pressing on 180 gram vinyl.

a chance encounter in barcelona. spain brought us together to make this record happen. it’s a precious little marvel of love from kou keri kou and electric cowbell. based in barcelona. spain. the group began with the aim of making music to dance to. taking inspiration from all over the world with no fear: the music from cuba. perú. jamaica. congo and nigeria is as important for kou keri kou as the music played in europe or in the united states. los zafiros. gary numan. los destellos. radio futura. sunny ade and kiko veneno share place in their imagination and help them create open-minded pop that always looks to the future. their lyrics are sometimes open. sometimes a bit more cryptic. sometimes political and sometimes biting. but always try to communicate with the listeners while trying to make them dance. they’ve been playing together for two years. creating songs that didn’t exist before. urging the people to dance and singing about their issues. which may also be yours.

after the big succesfull of the “metti una bossa a cena”. gerardo frisina now presents the unbelievable. amazing 2nd volume. a precious recovery of the past to revitalise the present. which builds up new ideas of the future. “metti una bossa a cena”. whose title is completely inspired by the famous soundtrack by ennio morricone. goes on into this research field. discovering very rare tracks of this italian bossa panorama. we believe the result is perfect. gerardo frisina. track compiler of this project. has brought to light some rare tracks and perfectly matched them to create a unique and elegant thread.
from the boom of the international neo-lounge revival italy has become the point of attraction of an almost maniacal interest. there is a lot of research work from different italian labels behind it. thanks to them even the latest generations have the chance to meet the made in italy sound of the soundtracks and library music and even more notoriety has been given to the genial arrangers. composers and musicians who have characterised the italian lounge scene of 60’s/70’s. such as ennio morricone and piero piccioni. a precious recovery of the past to revitalise the present. which builds up new ideas of the future. “metti una bossa a cena”. whose title is completely inspired by the famous soundtrack of ennio morricone. goes on into this research field. discovering very rare tracks of this italian bossa panorama. we believe the result is perfect. gerardo frisina. track compiler of this project. has brought to light some rare tracks and perfectly matched them to create an unique and elegant thread.
“yuxtaposición” is a recently unearthed treasure recorded by a tight italian trio in miami during the early seventies. until now. this music has only been heard in office backgrounds. tv commercials and movie soundtracks. but the perseverance of an admirer brought about its first-ever release on the italian schema label. imagine hearing a 1972-era cal tjader quartet without cal tjader and you get an idea of what to expect. it’s slightly latin. lightly funky and truly enjoyable. “yuxtaposición” offers enough to interest a jazz listener. but the sounds heard in these 35 minutes are really better appreciated as mood music. lead man. cabildo. composer of all ten tunes here. has a knack for writing jazzy little hooks that launch his tasty. well-crafted keyboard solos. often alternating fender rhodes and piano within the same song. his playing maintains a hypnotic command that recalls bob james’ cti style. electric bassist bobby fares and percussionist max ronnie make subtle. supportive contributions that serve only to enhance cabildo’s sound. there’s a funny thing about yuxtaposición too. it’s kind of like developing an addiction. you may not pay much attention to it at first. but before you know it. you’re hooked. you need to hear it to be satisfied. a very nice surprise.
wonderful 70s work from tom ze! the record’s a bit more straightforward than some of his other records from the decade. and has a number of tracks with a samba sound at the base – but there’s more than enough fantastic material to keep the record fresh. and tom’s writing is as great as ever. there’s a vocal group that sings with ze on many of the tracks on the record – but they also seem to sometimes act as a greek chorus. in response to breakaway vocal passages that are dominated by ze. includes the excellent baroque funky number “dor e dor”. plus the tracks “sonho colorido de um pintor”. “a baba”. “o sandalo”. “a briga do edificio italia com o hilton hotel”. and “happy end”. pressing on 180 gram vinyl. housed in a gatefold sleeve.
picture this: 11 musicians. dancers and dj join forces in 2014. drawn together by their passion for and hypnotized with the infectious grooves of salsa. boogaloo. afro. in short. the latin fervor that runs in the veins of those who live with a positive flow in their body and minds. 11 funkateers that go by the name of banderas. waving their caliente strut. from tokyo. japan.
akokan is a yoruba word used in cuba meaning from the heart. and indeed. every song on the self-titled debut album (march 30/daptone records) by orquesta akokan feels like a heartfelt gift from the band to the listener. assembled and led by cuban vocalist jose pepito gomez. orquesta akokan is a big band collective of the finest musicians on the island. both young and old. it features all-original music and was cut live to tape over a three-day session at havanas hallowed state-run estudios areito. areito is one of the longest operating studios in the world and where important cuban records have been made. the album was produced by jacob plasse and arranged by mike eckroth. comes in a gatefold sleeve with download code included.
OUTRO TEMPO: ELECTRONIC AND CONTEMPORARY MUSIC FROM BRAZIL. 1978-1992 (2X12 INCH LP)
2x12" Vinyl NL16.03.18
2018 repress - for their first multi-artist compilation. music from memory take us on a trip to the heart of the amazon rainforest. outro tempo: electronic and contemporary music from brazil. 1978-1992 is a double lp that explores the outer reaches of brazilian music. where indigenous rhythms mix with synthesizers and where mpb mingles with drum computers. as brazil faced the last years of its military dictatorship and transition to democracy. a generation of forward-thinking musicians developed an alternative vision of brazilian music and culture. they embraced traditionally shunned electronic production methods and infused their music with elements of ambient. jazz-fusion. and minimalism. at the same time they referenced the musical forms and spirituality of indigenous tribes from the amazon. the music they produced was a complex and mesmerising tapestry that vividly evoked brazilian landscapes and simultaneously reached out to the world beyond its borders.

HOJE E O PRIMEIRO DIA DO RESTO DA SUA VIDA (180G LP)
12" Vinyl lp NL04.01.18
a tripped-out batch of hard jamming tracks from ex-mutante rita lee – recorded with assistance from all the members of the group at the time. but in a mode that’s quite different overall! lee is clearly the star of the show here – singing all lyrics with a much fiercer vocal approach than on her earlier solo album – pushing things hard to keep up with the jamming keyboards of arnaldo baptista and guitar of sergio dias – both of whom are working with the energy that would show up in the mutantes styles in the years after lee departed. one of the most compelling aspects of the record is the structure of the tunes – less conventionally rockish overall than the direction os mutantes were moving towards – and still with that strong dramatic flair that lee always provided when in the group. titles include -vamos tratar da saude-. -amor branco e preto-. -superficie do planeta-. -teimoisia-. -tapupukitipa-. -beija me amor-. and -frique como-.
a landmark album from late 60s brazil! this is the first – and the wildest – album by this legendary group that was one of the founding forces of the tropicalia movement – a brilliant musical statement that easily ranks with some of the most groundbreaking late 60s american work by the velvet underground. captain beefheart. or the stooges! the music is a wonderful blend of 60s rock and early mpb – hard-driving with plenty of guitars. but also produced with beautifully baroque touches that echo through simultaneous albums by caetano veloso and gal costa – both of whose 1969 albums are strongly resonant with this one. in fact. caetano contributed a number of tracks to the album. including -panis et circenses-. -bat macumba-. -trem fantastma-. and his great -baby-. which is done fantastically here. great stuff all ’round!
180g brazilian polysom re-issue of the polydor original.
the second set of madness from the legendary os mutantes – and like the first. an album done in close collaboration with arranger/producer rogerio duprat. whose talents add a new level of genius to the record! the album’s got a compelling mix of styles that strikes out on the very first tune – a playful pastiche that’s partly postmodern. partly psychedelic. and still tremendously powerful decades later – even if you can’t understand most of the lyrics! styles are just about impossible to pin down. but that’s what makes the record so unique and essential – and if you ever needed one album to convince you of the mindblowing energy taking place during the tropicalia years. this one may well be it! a few tracks are written by tom ze. and titles include -dom quixote-. -dia 36-. -magica-. -rita lee-. -algo mais-. -qualquer bobagem-. and -fuga no ii-.
180 gram brazilian polysom re-issue of the polydor original.
the third album from the legendary os mutantes – part of the essential trio of sides released during the tropicalia years! the record’s got a sound that’s tighter and a bit more straightforward than their previous efforts – stricter song formats. and styles that lean heavily on rockish guitars and organ. but as the odd cover images on the front and back will attest. the band is still in a very creatively arty mode here – still working strongly with arranger rogerio duprat. in a wash of sounds and moods that fold contemporary music back upon itself with plenty of odd twists. turns. and surprises! titles include -desculpe babe-. -oh mulher infiel-. -quem tem medo de brincar de amor-. -hey boy-. -haleluia-. -ave. lucifer-. and -meu refrigerador nao funciona-.
180 gram brazilian polysom re-issue of the polydor original.
quite possibly the last truly sublime album ever recorded by os mutantes – a set that’s a bit more rock-oriented then their first few. but still pretty revolutionary overall! the group have expanded to a quintet at this point. but haven’t yet falling into the guitar-heavy groove of later years – and rogerio duprat is working with the group on arrangements. although mutantes member arnaldo baptista is handling production chores himself. odd styles still slide into the mix as the tunes roll on – creating that great sense of surprise that makes their best work so great. and keeping things fresh even when a bit more straight ahead! titles include a reprise of -baby-. one of the group’s early classics – plus -portugal de navio-. -virginia-. -tecnicolor-. -el justicero-. -lady. lady-. -sarava-. -it’s very nice pra xuxu-. and -top top-.
a legendary album! this previously unreleased album by os mutantes was supposed to be their breakthrough album to an english speaking market – but for years it’s only been talked about in hushed whispers. and has only been heard by a lucky few! the record was recorded in paris in 1970 – and it’s all in english! (not that we’re biased against portuguese. mind you – but since we’re english speakers. it’s kind of a nice thing to have a record that we can understand!) the record features a number of tunes from the mutantes first two albums – redone here with translated lyrics. and in a compressed pop style that’s a bit smoother than the original albums. but still very nice! in fact. the record’s a sophisticated pop statement that would have stood well in the company of many of the best of 1970s rock elite – had the boneheads at philips actually decided to release the record! no use crying over spilled milk. though – because the album’s out now. and it’s filled with loads of nice tracks like -panis et circensis-. -batmacumba-. -tecnicolor-. -el justiciero-. -i’m sorry baby-. -saravah-. and a sublime reading of -baby-. a track that was virtually the manifesto for tropicalia!
pretty great sounds from the legendary antonio carlos jobim – an album cut a bit later than his bossa years. but with a darkly sophisticated sound that’s pretty darn compelling! the album features larger orchestrations by claus ogerman. and in a way. it’s similar to the jobim album on decca from 1973 (aka maita pere) – in that it’s got all the simple elements of jobim’s earlier bossa scoring. flushed out into moodier orchestral forms that we’d rank right up there with the modernist work of gil evans or duke ellington. a few cuts have a breezier sparer sound. and you’ll hear english versions of some older bossa tunes. titles include -dreamer-. -canta mais-. -olha maria-. -wave-. -two kites-. -this happy madness-. -song of the sabia-. -estrada do sol-. -voce vai ver-. -off key-. and -triste-.
MUTANTES E SEUS COMETAS NO PAIS DO BAURETS (180G LP)
12" Vinyl lp NL08.12.17
180 gram brazilian polysom re-issue of the polydor original.
one of the hardest rocking albums ever cut by os mutantes – a record that’s got a slightly ironic take on rock and roll styles of the time – still performed with the sense of drama and humor that always made the band so great! rita lee and arnaldo baptista are still in the group at this point. and they’re working amidst a heavy wave of guitars that echo out with a bit of keyboards and some rhythms that are chunky enough to almost be called funky at times. but sweet and dreamy at others – all produced with a flanged-out finish that makes the whole thing sound great!
180 gram brazilian polysom re-issue of the polydor original.
an essential collection of rare material from this legendary brazilian group – and a set that shows the importance they had in the tropicalia movement beyond their own famous albums! the package brings together key collaborations between os mutanes and other key figures in music at the time – including some from rare singles. or other albums that maybe haven’t shown up on your radar if you’ve only been tracking the group by records issued under their own name. as a whole. the set’s a much-needed addition to their too-small catalog from these essential years – and titles include work with caetano veloso on -saudosismo-. -marcianita-. -a voz do morto-. and -baby- – plus -lady madonna- and -cinderella rockafella- done with clelia simone and kier – both live and 7” single versions of -ando meio desligado-. work with gilberto gil on -domingo no parque-. work with rogerio duprat on -cancao para ingles ver chiquita bacana- and -the rain the park & other things- – and the track -mande um abraco pra velha-. from a rare brazilian 60s compilation.
an incredible album from lo borges one of the best singer/songwriters on the brazilian scene of the 70s! borges first burst into the spotlight for his work on the club da esquina album by milton nascimento and his work as part of miltons corner club really helped shape the style of the more famous singer. yet borges is almost an equally great talent on his own with a soaring. soulful approach that’s every bit as great as the best nascimento material from the period and recorded in a wonderfully similar spirit! the sound here is completely sublime right from the start music that moves us. even if we can t understand the language of the lyrics like some of the best work by caetano veloso and gilberto gil. there’s maybe a bit more guitar than on some of the milton nascimento work of the period but used in a fuzzy way that slides in nicely with some of the jazzy phrasing of the instrumentation which is delivered with help from key contemporaries who include beto guedes. nelson angelo. toninho horta. and tenorio jr. the songwriting is amazing and titles include cancao postal. voce fica melhor assim. nao foi nada. calibre. faca seu jogo. toda essa agua.pensa voce. como o machando. and aos baroes.
an incredible album from brazilian rock legend raul seixas – easily one of the most important artists to emerge after the tropicalia generation – and a singer with a sound that’s as striking as his image on the cover! the album’s got an explosive blend of styles – everything from psychedelic samba to country rock to easy rock tunes – all bound together by the strong sense of presence that helped seixas elevate to become one of brazili’s most controversial rock stars of the time. all with the kind of legacy you might expect from the cover image! the sound is great – very different than what american and anglo groups were doing at the time. although with sly nods to their modes from time to time – and titles include the english track -how could i know-. plus -as minas do rei salomao-. -mosca na sopa-. -cachorro-. -al capone-. and the strange electronic -introducao-.
brilliant 70s material by antonio carlos jobim – one of his key sets from the middle part of the decade that had the composer really deepening his approach to both singing and songwriting – moving past some of the more instrumental modes that he was using at the start of the decade! there’s a richness to the songs that goes way past simple bossa styles – and the lyrical brilliance shows that jobim hardly ever needed a poet or co-writer to help him hit the heights – as he really wins us over with his words as much as his music. claus ogerman produced. and gives things the right balance between fullness and space in the charts – which allows both a great focus on antonio’s vocal style – expressive. but very down to earth – and a few nice solos on fender rhodes too! titles include -saudade do brasil-. -correnteza-. -boto-. -ligia-. -valse-. -arquitetura de morar-. and -o homem-.
a wild solo project from rita lee – done after the breakup of os mutantes. and offered up almost as some sort of commentary on mainstream rock in the 70s! there’s a much more straightforward approach to the music here – a sometimes-glammy sound that’s echoed by the band’s space-style costumes and makeup – but there’s also some weirdly old-style rock instrumentation too. almost like the way that an artist like gary glitter could fold the 50s and 70s together in his music. and come across making something very weird and new. here. the keyboards are almost stronger than the guitars – and rita herself plays moog. melotron. organ. and piano – on titles that include -tem uma cidade-. -menino bonito-. -mame natureza-. and -eclipse do cometa-.
these songs represent but a small sampling of the fruits of a flowering in brazilian creativity. the innovations in structure. lyrics and arrangements. combined with a very restrained but heartfelt intensity. are unique to brazilian pop music… and in their own way. are as radical. seductive and beautiful as the best english language pop.
the vinyl release includes a download code.
released in 1974. téo azevedos first album grito selvagem (wild shout) is an irresistible blend of soul and rock with an unmistakable brazilian character. as many other lost gems of time past. the album found little commercial success. and still during the 70s teo turned forever to the true brazilian popular music the forró. the roots of sertanejo and the rhythms and traditions of brazils often forgotten countryside becoming. from then on. a genuine cultural reference in brazil not only as musician and composer. but also as a poet and researcher of popular folklore. being awarded the grammy latino prize in 2013.

on the flip – a copacabana 7” release in the form of neyde alexandre’s 1971 song “perplexidade”. with a fantastic break intro. horn stabs and lush vocals. one of our favourite brazil 45’s.

a great 70s album by os novos baianos – a wonderfully youthful group that was one of the bright spots in brazilian music after the tropicalia years. the band had a style that mixed folksy percussion with honest personal songwriting. plus occasional touches of elements gleaned from the larger influences in brazilian rock at the time. the album has a sound that’s a lot more intimate than later work. with some especially great work on guitar and bandolim. and great production on the band’s vocals.
remastered reissue on 180 gram vinyl.
rootsy samba and hipper 70s mpb influences – all filtered down into a really unique little groove! back in these early years. novos baianos had an inventive sound that was really a standout in 70’s brazilian music – a sense of earnest. open-handed music making that was something of a legacy from the tropicalia years – but one that also carried with it some of the more hippie-dippy influences in the brazilian underground of the early 70s! the style here is a bit sparer and more acoustic than on some of the group’s other records – often comprised from samba percussion and guitar. but occasionally augmented by more electric instrumentation. as well as some folkloric flute!
