a stalwart of the uk underground & dance music scene, simbad’s music and dj skills have brought him to perform and record on all of the continents over the last decade. as a very sought after producer that still collaborates with the likes of fred p, deetron, roots manuva, lulu james, dayme arocena, mala (dmz), gilles peterson (six albums produced for gilles legendary brownswood label) to name a few, he’s been also remixing for countless other artists worldwide and has a vast array of releases on various imprints like apron, hyperdub, sofrito, bbe etc. “reconnect” remained a dubplate amongst a handful broken beat dj’s for years until simbad decided to release it on swedish brandy productions, a label that has been fairly constant in putting out timeless underground dance music since nearly two decades. remixes by the mighty boddhi sattva and concept e25 included.

simbad teams up with south african vocalist brian temba, whose previous release together come join in dropped on hi:rise back in 2011. in it’s original form take my hand is a sublime, forward-looking deep and soulful house track based around a filtering symphonic string loop, low-slung groove and heart-felt vocal. simbad has created a very london-centric vibe but with a french touch and detroit sensibilities, drawing from house heroes such as parrish and bradock, joining the dots and creating a fresh masterpiece in the process. next up we have jimpster on the remix, picking up the bpm’s slightly and loading up on his trademark deep stabs, sub-bass and spacious fx adding just enough dance-floor bump whilst leaving the vocal placed firmly at the core. on the flip side we have two smbd zulu edits which replace the more spartan groove of the original with some driving afro percussion. the first version keeps the vocal intact, the second version goes balls deep into dub territory, closing out this amazing release with an instrumental pushing the strings and hypnotic groove front and centre

thatmanmonkz and simba have both been dropping loads of tight house releases this year. over at gamm hq we ve been admiring their music from afar but have now managed to team them up together with a solid ep of house inspired reworks. split up over 4 tracks they snap elements from hip hop (tribe quest), r&b (e. badu) and disco. it s all deep, edgy and comes with a real gritty feel...just the way we like it.

simba is a sweet soul from the uk, wefound him through his release on shadeleaf music and super happy about this 12inch and his remix for marcel vogel on mate 11. a truly gifted man!

shadeleaf continue a fine and unbroken run of form with a stunning new ep from chris grant aka simba make your move opens things up with a beautifully executed, thumpin house jam, with j gordon adding an effortless vocal performance. sounds like a classic already ! susan sorandom (track title of the year ?) bumps along on a broad funkineven style groove, with killer drops and deft use of melodic hooks compete explores a more broken flex, but still shot through with that magical simba swing finally marvellous hacks up the prince of soul like never before, an absolutely deadly rewire that is the best ugly edit that never came out top drawer isht another shadeleaf sureshot !

esnard boisdur is one of the great voices of gwo ka – the folkloric rhythm of guadeloupe. frankie francis & simbad flip his 1991 track *soufwans* (sufferance) into a groove that combines hypnotic percussion and mournful vocals with detroit-inspired synths and a deep deep bassline. trust us this one is a monster on the dancefloor!

heavily influenced by moodymann and andres, new home taping artist simba produces music that is full of soulful echoes, while still dripping in raw house music vibes. quality house music for the believers out there. nothing is too straight in the simba sound as fx drift around and subtle production touches come at you from all angles. vinyl hiss is as important as the kick drum and the overall atmosphere has that classic house music quality that can transport you instantly to another place. the black madonna was the one who drew attention to the rising talents of this young producer. so fittingly she delivers her own lost in chicago take on the original, which delights in the tracks edginess and the wonderful release of the main hooks

since the early 1990s, keyboard player jessica lauren has been a familiar part of london s alternative music scene. jessica s keyboard skills have augmented the live performances and studio recordings of world renowned artists such as jean carne, tom browne, dexter wansel and james mason, japan s united future organisation, and uk soul diva juliet roberts. her previous freestyle album jessica lauren four (2012) highlighted jessica s minimalist approach, something rare and refreshing in the jazz world: she instills her compositions and playing with a refined sense of space which makes her music as much about what she doesn t play as what she does.

collection of recordings from one of tanzania’s most revered but short-lived bands of the 1970s, sunburst. covering their entire output from 1973 to 1976, this first retrospective features music from their 45 rpm singles on moto moto and tfc label, as well as their sole album, “ave africa”, and an unreleased radio session recorded in tanzania in 1973.
this release comprises of the double vinyl and a copy of the cd version, which contains extra tracks.

despite the renewed interest in music from kenyas past, finding these tracks and their rights holders hasnt become any easier. only a handful of music archives around the world harbour collections of kenyan music, and just a few private collectors in kenya and abroad have been sharing catalogue info online or privately. one of the problems with east african music of this era is that much of it was originally released only on 45 rpm, seven-inch vinyl singles, many of which were only ever produced in tiny runs of a few hundred. 45s with their thin, paper sleeves do not age as well as lps and are often far more susceptible to the elements

on their 2013 debut album voyage, l.a. duo de lux introduced their singular sound, a fusion of post-punk, disco, funk and synth wizardry. fun though voyage was, described by the guardian as -intricate, witty, inventive, dazzling and by dj mag as fresh, immediate, for their follow-up, de lux felt compelled to add an element of social commentary to the mix.
